Supported devices

The supported Sailfish X devices are listed in this table.

What’s new in Sailfish OS 5.0.0?

  • Sailfish Browser engine updated to Gecko ESR91, with work ongoing towards ESR102.
  • Android AppSupport upgraded to Android 13 (API level 33) for better app compatibility – first made available in C2 and later to other devices with migration from AppSupport 11 targeted for a future release.
  • MicroG 0.3.6 enablers added and fixed, improving opt-in support for Android apps dependent on Google services. Compatible with both AppSupport 11 and 13. MicroG instructions.
  • WireGuard VPN support added — can be manually installed on 5.0.0. Wireguard instructions.
  • New landscape mode for home view, events view, alarm view, and lock screen, with better support for notches and rounded corners.
  • Call blocking capability added, allowing selected incoming calls to be blocked.
  • Support for Jolla C2 and Jolla Mind2 built into the system, shaping the roadmap for future Sailfish development.

Release highlights 5.0.0.67

The list below contains the improvements of 5.0.0.67 compared to 5.0.0.62. All Sailfish OS release notes can be found here.

  • AppSupport11&13: audio delay at the beginning of calls with Android apps (Signal, etc.) fixed
  • AppSupport13: runs on Mind2
  • Browser text selection fixed on landscape
  • Mediaplayer crash when adding a song to a playlist is eliminated
  • Mediaplayer: quick alpha-scrolling added
  • Low memory killer values lowered on Xperia 10 III
  • WireGuard VPN connection is less prone to restarting when the network changes
  • WireGuard used to fail to reconnect after a connection change. The fixes here address the issue of WireGuard either disabling autoconnect or connect-disconnect looping after network changes.
  • WireGuard plugin (ConnMan) was fixed to handle hostname resolves. The changes here enable using FQDN with WireGuard as the host/endpoint.
NOTE: WireGuard must still be manually added.
  • Unnecessary device symlink warnings removed from C2 journal
  • HTTP 308 Permanent Redirect handling added to Qt. This should help refresh the calendar list in the Nextcloud account settings.
  • Random loss of audio after phone calls is fixed or alleviated by fixing a crash in ngfd.
  • Several fixes related to memory leaks, removal of dead code, undefined memory references, bad destruction code, unused dependencies, etc.
  • Sailfish OS installation instructions for MacOS fixed.

All recent Sailfish OS release notes can be found here.

Installable images

Installable images are available at Jolla shop. If you do not see your phone in the downloads table, get the free trial licence for yourself first. Installation instructions for Xperia phones are at Sailfish X Installation Instructions - Jolla.

Known issues on the latest devices

Jolla C2

  • Mobile data may not always be available for Android apps (despite our attempts to fix it)
  • Disabling a SIM card crashes AppSupport, after which mobile data does not work
    • Toggle the flight mode on and off to eliminate the problem.
  • Recording videos does not work
    • Use Android camera apps, e.g., Open Camera
  • The touch panel doesn’t sometimes work on the first device unlock screen, and the security code can’t be entered.
    • Workaround: Shut down and start the device using the power button.
  • Limited fastboot flashing support added to the C2 bootloader. Allow users to flash specific partitions with the public fastboot tool. C2 flashing instructions.

Xperia 10 IV and 10 V

  • Still in the free trial phase. However, AppSupport is available - read this post. Download the installable images from the Shop.
  • The issues of 4.6.0.15 remain.
  • Reflashing Sailfish (the 2nd time) does not work with the flashing script. The additional flashing instructions for Xperia 10 IV and 10 V are here (while the first-time flashing instructions are in the Shop).

Changelog

The changelogs are here.

How did the upgrade go?

  • I had no issues during the upgrade process
  • I had small issues, but was able to handle them
  • I got into serious trouble when upgrading my device (please help!)
  • I did not dare or want to update

Other

Some users reported problems with making phone calls. After they uninstalled the app “Personal ringtones”, phone calls started working. See [Release notes] Tampella 5.0.0.55 - #335 by shults.

That was a smooth update on my C2 and X10IV. Nice, Thanks!
Lets see, what effects we may see with all these memory improvements etc.

Updated my X10II through command line tools. No problems so far.
Update: Calling works. Mobile data works. WiFi works.

No problems for me too. One call came after update and worked fine as before.

Update on my Xperia 10 V went smooth. Less apps with “Check that google play is enabled” would be cool  Will there be a solution about this issue in the future - to support more Android Apps ?

Firstly, tell that to those apps.
Second, have you tried microG?

Update went fine on XA2.
However, the 10 V does not perform the upgrade from 5.0.0.62. I have already tried the following twice:

  • check for updates in Settings
  • the phone finds the update
  • I select Download
  • the phone downloads the update
  • I select Update
  • the phone reboots, asks for the security code
  • I enter the security code
  • the phone reboots, then asks the security code again, not performing the upgrade
  • the phone is back on 5.0.0.62
  • goto step 1

Edit: on the 3rd attempt I waited a bit longer before entering the security code on the reboot, and now the upgrade was performed.

I’m not sure if I understand it correct, but I’m still on App Support 11

  • 5.0.0.67
  • Xperia 10 III

Same here. But as if we read release highlights, it says that AppSupport 13 is released to Mind2, and not to our X10III devices.

  • AppSupport13: audio delay at the beginning of calls with Android apps (Signal, etc.) fixed
  • AppSupport13: runs on Mind2

I was hoping that this sound problem on Signal calls would be fixed on my X10III but I guess it is not as per reading the above (havent got a chance to test yet myself).

Looks like opengapps users will need to rebuild their appsupport image again.

Maybe we get lucky in 5.1?

Forget, they are not going to change/update the kernel. You are stick to AAS11.

Can you point to the source?

I remember reading in some reply from Jolla (in some Release Notes post 5.0.0.55/5.0.0.61/5.0.0.62…) that they just didn’t have the time yet to implement AAS13 for the X10III.

On my 10V no issues.
But
On my 10III I can not update, I gets an information that I must try later.
Maybe somewhere in the forum there is some help on the issue.

I wouldn’t bother about the missing AAS13 on 10III, since most of the FOSS apps in F-droid are still requiring Android 5.
In that means, It would require years for the 10III to become unusable.

I have updated my Xperia 10III yesterday to 5.0.0.67 from settings. No errors or bugs so long. All patches I use still working. Thanks jolla!

Thanks for the more conservative OOM settings, it really improves the multitasking experience on the Xperia 10iii !
