Jolla C2 first time use instructions

Dear Jolla C2 user,

A few important notes regarding the first boot and taking your new Jolla C2 into use as some issues have been reported recently in the forum:

  1. Plug your C2 into a USB-C charger before you start to boot up. We have noticed that some devices have had low battery capacity on the first boot, which may cause issues going forward. If you receive your device with a low battery, please leave it into a charger for two hours or more.

  2. Enter at least 5 digits or characters to the security code upon the first boot

  3. Remember to run the Startup Wizard through on the first boot and please DO NOT reboot your device during Startup Wizard. On the Startup Wizard, we recommend to select English (UK) language. Language can be later changed from Settings → Language. Please be patient on the first boot.

We are purposefully shipping devices without chargers and cables to reduce e-waste. You may use common USB-C chargers with your C2.

These are all safety measures so that your first boot and on-boarding goes smoothly. We’re working to deliver recovery mode via over-the-air software update.

I did plug mine to a charger before first booting up, but after plugging in, it booted up automatically. Then, while still plugged in it run out of battery before I had time to insert the security code and finish the wizard. Now the phone is in a state that it freezes in the language selection screen when booted. Managed to charge it, tho.

Shipping phones with an empty battery is a bad idea and bad UX. Experts say storing phone batteries empty will degrade them.

I guess delivering recovery mode via OTA won’t help the users who are stuck with a phone which is not able to reach a state where an OTA could be triggered, or am I mistaken?

Are you saying that you’re not able to give touch input? If you reboot again it does the same?

Exactly. Cannot give touch input. The display can be turned off and back on with the power button. Reboots don’t help. It also looks like the UI somehow loaded only partially with some elements missing.

In the first boot I was able to give touch input before the battery died.

Exactly the same happened to me. Also stuck at language selection.

Will make sure I charge it fully before turning it on tonight. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hey jolla : sorry for double posting but i think this might be a more appropriate place to post it instead of the other location

I just got my C2 and i was verry excited for it i got it unpacked and was trying to set it up i couldn’t get the configure with jolla account to work so i pressed skip : i sat a passcode got through the setup process then i proceeded through the tutorial then to WIFI settings it told me there was something wrong with the system and i needed to restart : i did and now when i boot the phone the phone is just stuck on the ENTER SECURITY CODE screen it has been there for 10 minutes now restart dosnt work and im afraid its bricked im in panic mode as i dont know what do do as it doesn’t run android and jolla has stated that the phone should not be factory reset through recovery and i don’t even know if this one has an recovery

Best regards. Oliver Lauritsen

Well, I ran wizard succesfully except network could not be set. I skipped it and decided to do that later in settings. But after fiddling on menus and apps a bit, I tried to do it, under that setting read something like network could not be set this time, please reboot…so I rebooted as instructed and then all went sideways because after reboot, wizard started again.

What there could have been done, because no wifi or mobile network worked and device instructed to reboot?

Exactly same result for me. I think it is best to keep calm and wait that Jolla guys are investigating problem. Frustrating, yeah but what could we do

Is there chance to load battery full before booting? Like pushing some buttons same time when charger is plugged in.

I’m waiting still my C2.

Same behavior on my end.
Wifi not available or mobile data.
Device wants a reboot, reboot and start from scratch.

And now it is stuck on enter code for 10 min while booting.

Dont think this device is going to function. :pensive:

Tried rebooting after 30 min of loading.
The phone knows when the code is incorrect.
“00000” gets a prompt its incorrect
But when entering the correct code it keeps loading and loading.

I am also not able to turn off the device.
When I hold the power button it does say good bye, but after the shutdown the phone turns on and boots to lock code again.

Same happened to me and my C2 device. Not possible to connect to wifi nor to mobile network. After reboot the phone sticks after entering securoty code:

I had C2 running w/o since arrival.
Today started to test Sim. Placed first ti sim1, got mobile data , sms after long wait to my main phone. Lost all mobile functions. Rebooted, no help. Moved sim to sim2 , started phone, security code , and circle spinning , waited loooong , gave long pres to power button, “good bye” . Removed sim ( no sim at all) , started phone . All running ok. except no sim, no mobile…
So if the security code is ok, and sim is in , test removing all sim.

Thanks for sharing your workaround.
I am afraid it did not work on my end.

My C2 was blocked at encryption pin code state at first boot. I’ve passed this step by using a usb mice to define more than 4 digit pin code. Then connect wifi, bypass the tutorial, and reboot the C2.

It’s seem working correctly after this step.

I can confirm that mouse input is possible when the phone is stuck in the language selection screen. There is no cursor, tho, so you are clicking blindly. However, the wizard stops before the security code setup step. I was then presented with the main lockscreen (clock and arrow guides on the sides). Still no touch input, and I couldn’t figure out how to open the lockscreen with a mouse. Maybe it would have been possible with a USB keyboard?

I rebooted the phone in hopes that touch input would be back. This was a mistake. Things are now worse than before: When booted, the phone will show the encryption unlock screen for a couple of seconds and then silently shut down. At least I think it shuts down. No touch input. Not enough time to start blindly (no cursor) trying to figure out what code would unlock the phone (if any?).

If you get to the main lockscreen, do not turn off the phone before setting up a security code.

Did someone try to let the phone and do nothing until the battery is empty, to reset the device?

During setup (enter WLAN password) there was NO keyboard. Maybe the keyboard must be restarted after changing the keyboard languages. So I had to finish the setup w/o WLAN. Than I restarted the keyboard with one of the helper programs in the settings app. And the keyboard will shown when needed.

Best way; Finish the setup with the default language (english).

Hello,
I did as instructed. As some user reported during the startup wizard the WLAN connection could not be enabled, so I skipped it and the wizard ended correctly, as far as I could see.
I put in the SIM card. But the network could not be enabled, neither via WLAN nor mobile data.
In the WLAN Setting the phone told me to reboot.
Unfortunately I did.

For what ever reasons after I entered my security code, the startup wizard started again and somehow tried to encrypt the user data again … and failed. After the end of the wizard, still no network and I was told in the WLAN settings to restart the phone (again).
Now it went sideways (probably because of the encryption in the second run of the wizard), and I get the forever spinner after entering the security code.
Please tell us, what we should do.
