[Release notes] Tampella 5.0.0.43 for Jolla C2

Version history of the OS release

  • 2024-10-24: OS version 5.0.0.21 “Tampella” was released for the Jolla C2 community phones as an over-the-air update.
  • 2024-11-14: OS version 5.0.0.29 “Tampella” was released for the Jolla C2 community phones as an over-the-air update.
  • 2024-12-17: OS version 5.0.0.43 “Tampella” was released for the Jolla C2 community phones as an over-the-air update.

PLEASE NOTE

The security code of Sailfish OS is a minimum of 5 digits or characters. It is used for the device lock and home area encryption and is set at the beginning of the first startup. If you decide to use an external keyboard at this point, remember that you do not set a code shorter than 5 characters.

New community phone Jolla C2

  • This OS update, 5.0.0.43, is intended for the C2 phones only. Other phones will get the Sailfish 5 later.

Release highlights

The list below contains the major improvements of 5.0.0.43, compared to 5.0.0.21:

  • VoLTE is supported on the C2. VoLTE means phone calls and messages in 4G networks. Visit “Settings > Mobile network” and enable “4G calling (VoLTE)”
  • Sailfish Browser engine (Gecko) updated to v. 91.13.1
  • Phone shutdown prevented during startup wizard encryption
  • Factory reset supported on the C2 (but not yet via the UI)
  • Limited fastboot flashing support added to the C2 bootloader. Allow users to flash specific partitions with the public fastboot tool. Flashing instructions.
  • Instead of the confusing error message “Networking is unavailable. Please reboot,” the message “WLAN adapter not available” is shown when the connection manager is broken or the device does not have functional WiFi technology.
  • Physical keyboard support fixed in AppSupport, with layout support (AppSupport 13)
  • PackageKit: crash on resolving package sources fixed
  • For OS updates, there is a change to avoid updated packages from being unnecessarily added to the list of packages to be removed, i.e., there is a sanity check for packages detected for removal during OS update. Note: this change does not help when installing 5.0.0.43 - it will help with the next update.
  • VPN status icon fixed to follow the VPN connecting state
  • Some translations (l10n) updated

Updating your device

The usual update process

Your device must be connected to the Internet and signed into your Jolla account.

Start the update from “Settings > Sailfish OS updates”. Avoid running updates on the command line, please.

We warmly recommend making some 3-4 GB of free space for your device’s internal storage ( /home ) before starting the update. Processing an OS update of almost 1 GB requires a good amount of work area. Move your pictures and videos to the SD card (or your PC or cloud service).

This is the usual drill before attempting to update your devices:

Back up your data before an attempt to update your device and save the backup to an SD card or some other off-device location (PC, your cloud service). Note that videos and images are not included in cloud-based backups. Do not reboot the device while the update is being processed. Do keep the phone connected to a battery charger during the whole process. The device screen may get blank during the update process; you may wake the display with a short power key press to monitor the progress.

NOTE 1:

Sailfish OS does not support downgrading. Never try to downgrade the OS as this would break your device.

NOTE 2:

After downloading an update and selecting “Install” in the pulley menu, the device runs a restart first. You will need to type the security code before the actual installation can start. A horizontal progress bar appears on a black background, under the Sailfish OS logo. When the other end of the bar has been reached the phone will restart automatically. If it doesn’t, please wait for 15 minutes. If it is still stuck at the 100% point of the progress bar, turn the power off. Next, turn the phone on with the power key and check the OS version at “Settings > About product”.

NOTE 3:

The Jolla Shop has the images of the latest OS release only. Keep the previously downloaded ones stored on your computer if you should want to reflash one of them later on.

Notification concerning apps from Open Repos

  • Compatibility with the release 5.0.0 has not been verified yet. Early Access users, please report

Some apps from Open Repos have been reported to cause problems when installing OS updates. Read the recent comments on those apps.

  • Call recorder has caused serious problems. We recommend uninstalling that app before the OS update. Read this comment, please.

Flashing instructions

Instructions for updating the bootloader (if needed) and flashing the C2 with the fastboot flasher.

Known issues

  • AppSupport can’t use mobile data yet (WhatsApp works, though)
    • Workaround: Use WiFi
  • The touch panel doesn’t sometimes work on the first device unlock screen, and the security code can’t be entered.
    • Workaround: Shut down and start the device using the power button.
  • Scanning WiFi networks may sometimes stop working.
    • Workaround: Disable and enable WLAN, or reboot the device.
  • Recording videos does not work
    • Try Android camera apps, e.g., Open Camera

How did the upgrade go?

  • I had no issues during the upgrade process
  • I had small issues but was able to handle them
  • I got into serious trouble when upgrading my device (please help!)
  • I did not dare or want to update

I am not keeping my hopes high that [4.0.1.48][4.1.0.23][4.4.0.64][4.5.0.16][5.0.0.29] No notification sounds (ringing, SMS, alarm) - #84 by nephros is resolved. There are some crashes fixed in ngfd, but crashes would trigger a service restart. The bug of disappearing notification sounds is more probably some gstreamer handling locking up…

At first try the update says “it cant be installed” after reboot and security-code.
Now, when I try to start the update again, it prepares a while the update. At the point I can say “download the update” it “searches for connection”. After a few minutes nothing has happened. And so the update itself should be downloaded from the first try and I think the dialogue should recognize it?

VoLTE is working, but it is not possible to send a text messages

I wouldnt be angry if 5.0 would be released to X10III some day after this :kissing_heart:

I also would love a release for the 10 V, the battery of my 10 II is getting worse every day. :neutral_face:

Will the re-flashing automatically perform the famous partition resizing?

I noticed that “Flare” still seems untranslated. Was Slovenian updated also? It was at 100% on time for 5.0 and again soon (IIRC the 21st of October from l10n platform sounds about right) after some small update with a few new strings.

Update works without problems, the only letdown is, that android apps still can’t use mobile data. I need this for the “Detusche Bahn” app for public transport tickets.
Has anyone a workaround for specific android apps, maybe?

Here also no problem with the Update and the same reason for not using the C2 as daily.
I would state, that fixing this issue alone to be reason enough for an additional cristmas update release. With VoLTE resolved, this is the main pain point for most users now IMHO.
