Community meeting on 15th January 2026

Please note new time slot

Schedule: Thursday 2026-01-15T16:00:00Z :world_map: :date:

Sailfish OS Community Calendar (ICS format)

Even if you do not participate, topics tend to generate discussion. I want to see discussion happening. Thus, I’m proposing that we’d use 10mins as minimum topic duration. Maximum 6 topics a week. We’ll continue with the extended 90 mins meeting duration.

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • Add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • Indicate how much time you’ll need so we can time-box the meeting accordingly.
  • Please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic.
  • If you can’t make the meeting please ask and name a substitute.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: always ask for more time than you anticipate your topic needs!

Please have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting so we can prepare good answers. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

Template for topic proposal: (post your topic proposals as comments to this forum topic).

Topic: Less extreme Store limitations
Some details about the topic: I have two apps which IMO don’t do anything extraordinary but neither can be currently published to the Jolla Store. One of them is BitSailor and the other is the Beginner’s Guide. The Beginner’s Guide app uses DBus calls to open a store page directly, while BitSailor needs node.js. Especially the DBus stuff is ridiculous, that’s like disabling Intents on Android.

  • Topic: Featuring good apps from Chum or Storeman in the Jolla Store

  • Some details about the topic: There will be various new users and Sailfish ecosystem may be difficult to understand for beginner users. Jolla Store could be a little bit modified to include featured apps from Chum or Storeman. The list should be provided by trusted users and any app listed in the Jolla Store would have a warning with some explanation. This information could be provided by the trusted users or even by the developer. See this thread for further details: Merging Jolla Store, Chum and OpenRepos together

  • Approx. time needed: 15 minutes

  • Substitute (optional): nobody, I’ll try to be present

  • Topic: xmpp system integration open sourcing

  • Some details about the topic:
I recall accounts was headed for opening? Is xmpp perhaps possible. As it stands xmpp integration isn’t really usable since both cryptography and groups features are missing.

Topic: Back cover of the upcoming J2, specifically cameras
Some details about the topic: To protect front lenses, cameras should be recessed
Approx. time needed: 5 min
Substitute (optional): nobody, I plan to be present

The renders on commerce.jolla.com show that, when laid down, the phone will rest on the cameras. So it is quite likely the front lenses will get scratched, impairing image quality.

How final is the design? Is there any chance to change the design to make cameras at least slightly recessed?

Does this not apply also to, for example, Xperia phones, where the camera also sticks out a tiny little bit?
The cameras on the J2 protruding more could even be better, because the angle created between the camera lens and the back of the phone may prevent it from resting on the center of the lens and instead make it rest only on the black rim around the lens.

This is a problem with many phone designs, but I wouldn’t take it as an argument for doing the same with the J2. All the “real” cameras I have feature recessed front elements (except for some ultra wideangle lenses).

You have a point there  . I can’t tell from the renders if that rim is thick enough to keep the lens safe.

Topic: Updated Forum rules to address AI generated posts
Some details about the topic: Unfiltered AI posts regurgitate falsehoods, waste effort and turn threads into an offtopic mess
Approx. time needed: 15 min
Substitute (optional): nobody, I plan to be present

We are seeing an influx of new members, which is a good thing. It’s probably unavoidable that newcomers post questions or ideas that have already been discussed at length. Even if this is a burden for forum regulars, it is something we need to deal with as gracefully as possible.

However, posting unfiltered AI content is a new trend that brings a concentrate of all the normal forum challenges with more harm than benefit. I would like to see the forum rules updated to discourage or ban the practice. Maybe like:

Please avoid posting AI generated content. People will be much more interested in engaging with your original ideas.

Edit: Active moderation is better than detailed rules. Also, I my allergy towards AI slop resulted in a harsher-than-necessary reaction. I do think it should be mentioned in the Forum Rules, but something short (like the above) would suffice.

Do not post AI content on the forum.

The AI just gives you a sequence of plausible sentences, nicely structured and styled. It all sounds very convincing and impressive. However, your real work starts there. AI output is often wordy and ambiguous, and it always needs a substantial effort to fact-check. Any advice or conclusion must be corrected and clarified. Also, to contribute to the discussion, you have to fully understand what you have posted. This is easier if it is grounded in your actual experience, rather than a generic AI essay.

You need to put that effort into your post, otherwise nobody has any reason to care. Engagement would be a waste of effort and bring no benefit to the community. People would grow tired of you and you will fail to fulfil your intentions.

Do not post AI content on the forum.

~~edit: wording~

We had a discussion under moderators.
A summary:

  • We will verify if a topic contains various topic, if not we’ll ask the user to split it
  • If a user uses too much AI without any value to the discussion, we will politely ask him to change his mindset

That sounds good, again thank you for the work you do improving the forum for us all!

I still think it would make sense to have some mention of this in the Forum Rules, since it is so easy to be impressed by AI output and even easier to copy-paste it in a post.

Topic: Support backlog
Some details about the topic: In mid-December, there was mention of a long list of support tickets resulting in delayed replies. What is the current situation?
Approx. time needed: 5 min
Substitute (optional): none, I plan to be present

A month ago, there was this message asking for patience:

…and since then we’ve had major holidays, so it could be that you still have a long queue of tickets to deal with. What is the current situation for support, what kind of delays could be expected?

Edit: removed reference to resolved issue

My topic is related to Community meeting on 15th January 2026 - #3 by pherjung .

  • Name/IRC nick: ichthyosaurus (sadly I won’t be able to make it)

  • Topic: Harbour exception for File Browser

  • Some details about the topic: File Browser is one of the most downloaded/upvoted apps in the official store. However, the version published in the official store is severely restricted due to Sailjail: folders restricted by Sailjail appear empty, and there’s no way of knowing if a folder is inaccessible due to Sailjail or if it is actually empty, leading to confused users asking me for help because they can’t find their files.

I had to add a notice to the official store page encouraging users to switch to the unrestricted version on Open Repos because what is a file manager if it can’t access the files it is supposed to be managing?

This is bad from a security perspective because it leads users to OpenRepos even though they maybe don’t know the hidden traps there. It is also bad optics to have one of the few apps that are always visible in the store (i.e. the first thing a new user will notice) recommending to switch to an unofficial store instead.

I’m asking for a exception to the Harbour rules just for File Browser, or for (vetted, trusted, and stable) file manager apps in general.

This could either be implemented as a new Sailjail permissions set for file managers (i.e. giving full file system access), or as a broad exception allowing File Browser to disable Sailjail in Harbour.

Isn’t this part of the first topic of the meeting: Less extreme Store limitations?

Topic: Progress in Xperia 10 IV/V ports?
Some details about the topic: The Xperia 10 IV and V ports seems freezed from many months ago. Some users got to use the Xperia 10 V using v4b blobs, to fix the battery monitor, but the camera, microphone (only works in calls) and hardware codecs doesn’t works yet.
I want to know about the progress in these ports, especially camera and microphone.

I like all of these topics, but I can’t help notice this in the first post:

Maximum 6 topics a week.

Does this mean some of these topics will have to be shifted to the next meeting?

4 posts were merged into an existing topic: New binaries / blobs for Xperia V and IV : What is happening actually?
