Android app crashes when started from app grid but not when it is started from Android™ settings

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100%
OS VERSION: 4.6.0.11 (Sauna)
HARDWARE: Sony Xperia 10 II
UI LANGUAGE: English
REGRESSION: Yes

DESCRIPTION:

Android app for Philips Smart TV’s crashes upon opening from the launcher icon.
If I go to Settings/Apps/TVapp/Open Android settings/Open (in green text) the app then opens and is usable, So, the app works but always crashes when trying to open from launcher icon.

PRECONDITIONS:

Install the said app.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. See description

EXPECTED RESULT:

App to open as it did before updating to 4.6.0.11 (Sauna).

ACTUAL RESULT:

App crashes every time.

MODIFICATIONS:

None

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Possibly related to how you can successfully start an Android app from the Terminal, when the app in question promptly shuts down when started from the launcher icon.

I am able to reproduce the reported issue. It goes as said in the description.

Quite right, sounds pretty much the same. Search did not show me this question!, grrrr.

At least, I’m happy to report that by this way

Settings/Apps/[MalfunctioningApp]/Open Android settings/Open (in green text)

I’m able to successfully open my own culprit app (Lidl Plus) which acts as described by the OP.

It very much looks like it’s the same root issue, what ever it may be.

Application HP Prime Lite (a calculator) follows the reported failure pattern 100%.
I have the logs (Android and Sailfish). It should be doable to get this fixed.

This is a solution for the Vodafone App too. The Vodafone app crashes when starting by clicking the icon after some seconds. If starting with the method via Settings … it works stable.

Issue: apps crash when opening them from the app grid
We have a fix for this. It will be delivered in the next 4.6.0 release.

It is fixed in 4.6.0.15. Most Android apps, including the Philips TV, can be opened from the app grid.
