eSIM and Sailfish OS

Don’t want to sound pessimistic here, reading the pull request comments, it seems that this turns off the 2nd SIM slot because the eSIM is not supported with a reminder to turn it back on when it will be. This effectively disables the 2nd SIM and acknowledges the fact the eSIM needs more work. It doesn’t specify when / if the 2nd SIM will be enabled.

Fully agree, I do not think this is coming very soon, only soon

Since I’m travelling in US often enough, looking forward to eSIM. This will be my reason to switch from X10III → V.

Why would a 10 V be an advantage over a 10 iii? Both should support eSIM when the functionality is delivered (ie. never)

I didn’t knew that 10 III has eSIM. Mine for sure hasn’t.

Mine neither and according to Sony documentation Xperia 10 III (XQ-BT52) doesn’t support e-sim

My bad, sorry (20 characters)

Community member @b100dian posted this article in IRC which could be helpful for eSIM support under sfos. Let’s hope that eSIM support will get some traction in the near future

The physical esim sounds like the best of both worlds. I could easily see myself transferring my carrier sim into a physical esim that I could also load other travel sims into.

Great if someone with a physical esim could try this software.

And I saw this on the Osmocom esim page: GitHub - osmocom/pysim: A python tool to explore and program SIMs / USIMs / ISIMs. Mirror of https://gitea.osmocom.org/sim-card/pysim

I have a dual sim xperia 10ii (physical + esim) and it looks like support is already there, Sailfish at least recognises the phone is dual sim capable (Sailfish 4.5). Settings shows two sim slots, see screenshot.

I haven’t tried it yet though…

I don’t believe the 10 II has eSIM. Are you confusing it with something like an actual physical SIM providing same/similar functionality?

I think the mentioned software is more of a front end to lpac, which would have to be ported to SFOS first: GitHub - estkme-group/lpac: C-based eUICC LPA
If I understand lpac correctly, it can be used from the command line, so a front end would not be strictly necessary.

any updates here? I’d like to try SFOS on Sony Xperia 10 IV but need eSIM support

Given the fact the new C2 reference device apparently does not support eSIM I doubt Jolla will be much motivated to implement this. I think it will have to come from the community.

Not really planned but some preparation things have been done. eSIM is somethimg that we need eventually support.

As we speak, there are more urgent items to finalize. Support for eSIM is something that we roadmap for Sailfish 5 series but not for the first release.

So, no dual sim use in X10V (XQ-DC54) then … and XQ-DC72 is not on the list of supported devices, why XQ-DC54 was the device to go for…
:put_litter_in_its_place:

Then my 10III has to last a bit longer.

We have decided to support the variant XQ-DC72, too. It has two physical SIM slots, one of which can be used for a SIM card or an SD card. Our documents need an update. XQ-DC72 shares the code base with XQ-DC54 but requires a different configuration. We will create dedicated flashable images for these two variants.

XQ-DC54 has the eSIM, one physical SIM slot and an SD card slot. Unfortunately, Sailfish does not support the eSIM. Therefore, XQ-DC54 works as a single SIM phone.

Hooray, this is great to have this confirmation. Thanks so much.

Not 100% Sailfish related but may still be interesting to get some background information on eSIM:
