Next gen Jolla Phone

Hi there,

As noted in the previous community meeting, we’d like to define the next gen Jolla Phone together with the community.

Now, we’ve been offered access to a good quality modern 5G smartphone platform and we’d love to hear everyone’s opinion on the key configuration specifications and also to get a feeling of the potential demand for such a product.

To make the next gen Jolla Phone commercially viable we estimate that we should get in minimum 2,000 pre-orders so we can start the project. If we get a good grip on the specs and the sufficient demand, you can think the product could be available then in Q1/2026.

Memory

The memory (RAM) goes in hand with the SoC itself and to some extent with the eMMC, so please mark your preference considering both memory (RAM) & Internal Storage (eMMC) as combined together. Note that the memory has high impact to the overall Bill-of-Material (BOM) and likely we can offer only one combined memory configuration initially.

Memory (RAM)

  • 12 GB
  • 16 GB
  • 24 GB

Internal Storage (eMMC)

  • 128 GB
  • 256 GB
  • 512 GB
  • 1024 GB

Display

Higher the resolution/ppi, stronger the GPU has to be and more it needs to compute. Bigger the display there is more to illuminate. All this means higher power consumption from the battery. Further, the display size in practice pretty much defines also the max battery size (=capacity) that can fit to the housing structure. Thus, with a smaller display, the battery will be smaller and with a larger display it is easier to fit a high capacity battery.

So please mark your preference considering the different aspects.

Size

  • ~5" (~128mm diagonal, like original Jolla C 2016 and Sony Xperia X)
  • ~6" (~154mm diagonal, like Sony Xperia 10 II/III/IV/V)
  • ~7" (~179mm diagonal, like Jolla C2)

Resolution

  • Full HD
  • Something in between
  • 4K

Cameras

The phone will have a high definition primary (back) camera and a selfie (front) camera by default. In addition, we’re particularly interested on the selfie and secondary camera preferences; ultra wide lens, zoom or something else?

Primary (back) camera: High Definition

Secondary (back) camera

  • Ultra wide
  • Zoom camera
  • Other (and you may also leave a comment in the thread below)

Selfie (front) camera

  • Wide lens
  • Prefer megapixels
  • Other (and you may also leave a comment in the thread below)

Other items in priority order

Note: consider this as additional wishlist. Having all the bells’n’whistles won’t be feasible for the product but we can try to prioritise items based on the preferences. Therefore it is important for us to know your priority preferences. You may leave items also blank.

  • Self-replaceable battery
  • Repairability
  • Front RGB LED
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • External memory devices (SD card, USB-C etc.)
  • Dual SIM
  • Fingerprint
  • Better support for Bluetooth accessories (e.g. to support wearable devices, Bluetooth for Android apps)
  • WiFi 6/7 connectivity
  • BT 5.4

Price point

Considering all above and your preferences, how much would you be ready to pay for your phone? The configuration sets the cost base, and in particular the memory, display and cameras have high impact to the overall Bill-of-Material (BOM). Below price categories would include local taxes.

  • less than 600€
  • 600€ to 800€
  • 800€ to 1000€
  • even over 1000€ is ok for me!

Markets

The initial market for the phone will be Europe, and we look forward to enable the product to other markets. Thus, we’d love learn where are you from?

  • European Union (EU area)
  • non-EU Europe
  • North Americas
  • Other (and you may also leave a comment in the thread below)

Note that this questionary is not any commitment for you to order the phone and vice versa for us to make it - we just want to hear your views and understand the potential.

So, call to action for everyone out there - please spread the word so we get as many persons as possible to vote and share their views, and that we can make this happen! We intend to keep this initial questionaire open couple of weeks.

Great !!!

  • For the market i voted for EU aera, but it would be “cool” that the smartphone can work in North Americas or other non-EU countries
  • then it would be also “cool” to connect a DAC on usb port (that the x10iii can not do at this time)

That’s not a hardware thing.

Also a note of clarification on my vote for 6’'; that sort of assumes wider-than-16:9.
I have quite big hands and a Pinephone Pro at 6.0 and only slightly big bezels is borderline too big.

Is it expected that the “other items in priority order” section, unlike others, does not let us see anything like raw votes, but only some kind of elimination log?

Yes of course ! And Qt 6 ?

Hopefully the new phone (if there will be one) won’t be one of those huge slabs, that everyone seems to be making these days. I voted for the small size, but the medium size will do for me as long as it can be easily used with one average-sized hand (like SFOS was ment to be used). At the moment I feel like SD-card (with this you could skimp on eMMC) and RGB-led are important and almost a must have features for me, and user replaceable battery would be nice bonus (maybe consider bringing back The Other Half!). In terms of performance, memory, camera or other features, I don’t think SFOS phones needs to compete with flagship models from other manufacturers, and good enough parts are fine for me. For pricing, 600€ or less would be my preferred price point (and I have my expectations adjusted for what you can expect in this price point), but the next price range will most likely do as well.

Edit: Just like @nephros below me pointed out, double-tap-to-wake is a must have. If it would have been in the other items -voting, it would have been my number 1 choice easily.

Jolla staple features:

  • double-tap-to-wake
  • OLED so we can has low power mode
  • ToH? Well maybe not, but some kind of hardware port for electronics tinkerers? (i2c or 10w or a pi-hat-thing or so)
  • (ninja edit) nemo user name, you know, for old times sake, or as a goody for preorders.

are you insane? It’s not a computer, its a phone, SFOS requires only 2GB, 4GB is plenty

storage 1TB
again, are you insane?

I second the OLED, for me it is strictly : no OLED = no buy

Jolla doesn’t want to merge HBM patch so HBM won’t work on OLED (high brightness mode)

12GB RAM is really too much, unless smaller sizes are harder to obtain for some reason. An 8GB option would be more than enough. The more RAM we have on our phones, the more likely app developers are to use it carelessly and forget to optimize their apps.

It’s very nice to get even asked via this poll! Thanks for that and for creating a new phone as an alternative to Android and iOS!

It should have SD card slot, then 1TB is no problem. I now have on my old Xperia 10!

totally agree, 1TB and insane stuff like that is only for if it doesn’t have one and even then its stupid my laptop has 512GB and thats a laptop not a phone

tbh it should have two microsd slots

No, 4GB isn’t plenty. 8GB should be minimum these days.

For SailfishOS low memory might be enough, but AppSupport seems to be eating memory very fast. And IMHO there can’t be enough memory.

For future-proof is 12GB better. 8GB has iPhone 16 which has more optimized OS including browser. More and more Android smartphones have 12GB RAM as standard, some even have 16GB or 24GB RAM and if we need to use some Android apps…
