Long-term Sailfish OS updates free-of-charge for all Jolla C2!

Midsummer greetings!

We’re happy to announce that from now onwards long-term Sailfish OS updates are included free-of-charge to all Jolla C2 devices  for a minimum of 5 years. This applies also to everybody who have already purchased the Jolla C2.

While we guarantee the software support and security fixes for 5 years from the last sold Jolla C2 unit, in practice it can be even longer if just technically feasible to support. Those who have been longer Sailfish OS users already know that we have a very solid track record of the long-term SW support: the original Jolla Phone we supported for 7 years with total of 34 software updates making it a world-record of its time!

Further, the previous community edition, the Jolla C from 2016, was supported even longer for 8 years with the last release Sailfish OS 4.6 Sauna made in 2024.

Alongside this change, we’re gearing Sailfish OS subscription model towards a voluntary basis monthly fee. Details of the model will be announced separately and we’re planning to apply it July onwards.

Happy midsummers, enjoy!
Jolla Crew

Is it because of Cybersecurity Act ?

Thank for the good news! Its good for the Jolla C2 owners (including me). But we also wait for better Hardware, where we can run our belowed OS. Lets offer Android App Support for 3 best community port devices, so Jolla will get some money there too!

Amazing idea! Also 100% agree about the hardware. Hopefully “soon”

If paying for the license becomes voluntary, how will you finance yourself?

People voluntarily paying is better than postponing introducing a mandatory fee over and over…

So you are saying you don’t intend to pay at all?

I agree but it’s not a long-term sustainable solution

Of course not - how should our beloved Jolla survive without money?
I always thought that 50€ one-time licenses were too less for the company, so I wouldn’t hesitate paying them more money.

Licenses are not main income stream, nor secondary. they’re miniscule amount of profit for them. Main income sources are automotive, working with other companies and investors

Big W for Jolla. Will happily pay monthly regardless, but great that it won’t be mandatory (I imagine that puts some off).

Not sure I can see myself using my C2 for 5 years given it is a low-mid range device, but time will tell  Great to have long-term updates for it regardless

Yes. For example for Mercedes-Benz. Jollas AAS is officially introduced in Mercedes-Benz E-Serie cars. See Hands On With Mercedes' New Third-Gen MBUX Infotainment With Android Apps and this Linkedin link 🌟 Reflecting on an Incredible Week at #Slush! | Seafarix and in the german linux news blog Jolla hebt Abonnement für das C2 auf - LinuxNews.de with the text “…Dem Unternehmen scheint es also nach den Stürmen der Vergangenheit derzeit gutzugehen, was vermutlich nicht zuletzt auf Erfolge im Automotive-Umfeld zurückzuführen ist. So ist Jolla AAS (Android App Support) seit letztem Jahr im Infotainment der Mercedes-Benz E-Serie vertreten.”.

Wow that is very cool. Jolla is fueling innovation. I’m glad to see something unique here. Jolla can be proud making it possible for mercedes to use their own os and interface. That’s really nice to see. So maybe someday there will be a place for a meego like os again. Sailfish os was really good when it came out and it has become better, but one sees that jolla is having a hard time. Or at least had.

good news. more likely to buy the C2 now it is treated as a product, rather than a service.

still prefer the Sony handsets (yay for 10vi), but i may be swayed towards the C2 yet…

Can we have this voluntary fee include QT licenses? So ones who pay can get QT6.

This makes no sense, as Jolla would have to maintain two different variants of all software then.

As a developer I do not see any reason anyone would happily learn QT5 just for Sailfish apps. Especially new developers, and also backporting is a pain.

OT: Q: Is there any option to install Nemo onto a Xperia 10 or a Xperia X?
On their homepage I could only see Pine Phone and Volla Phone as supported devices.
