Sailfish OS voluntary subscription

On midsummer greetings we communicated that we’re gearing Sailfish OS subscription model towards a voluntary basis monthly fee.

We are happy to announce that Sailfish OS voluntary subscription is now available for anyone interested to support Sailfish OS development and the activities around it! With easy options you may choose for a one-time fee whenever you wish or make it a monthly recurring - totally up to your preferences!

The subscriptions contribute to the long-term viability and existence of this unique European project. Together we can keep the platform open, independent and continuously improving.

Concretely, it also contributes to keep up the development and maintenance of essential community services, such as:

  • Offering Sailfish OS freely for the development of popular community ports
  • Publicly available documentation that anyone can use and contribute to
  • Sailfish OS Forum, the home of our community discussions and collaboration
  • Community OBS (Open Build Service), enabling developers to build and share software. The Community OBS is an essential service for the tens of community ports which we are very happy to see developing and continuously new community ports being created!
  • Translation platform, making Sailfish OS available in more languages worldwide. Thanks to the active community translators we are able to offer Sailfish OS freely available for 30+ languages and counting!
  • …and much more that keeps the ecosystem alive and growing

Why subscribe?

By joining as a voluntary subscriber, you can contribute to:

  • Strengthen the viability and independence of Sailfish OS
  • Offer a viable alternative not coming from the big tech cluster
  • Support the platform and ongoing software development
  • Keep essential community infrastructure maintained and 24/7 available

Every contribution matters. Whether small or large, the contributions help to ensure Sailfish OS is available as a true European alternative for everyone who values privacy, openness and digital sovereignty.

We welcome anyone interested to subscribe at the official Jolla Shop!

I would be happy to pay on a monthly basis, but the checkout shows 18,90 € shipping costs?!?

That should be fixed now.

Will it be connected to the user account at some point?

Sailfish OS voluntary subscription

Subscribed.

Is 14.90 € really the top tier? Why not also have at least 29.90 € and 49.90 € available, for various smaller and bigger for companies.

“Voluntary” title, maybe makes it look like a donation, with possible extra tax implications in various jurisdictions? Best for companies would be to just drop “voluntary” word from at least invoice line item. Web display doesn’t matter, whatever helps conversion.

Would it make sense to have “other sum” field where person/company can determine the amount they want to pay?

out of curiosity, why is this subscription limited to only europe, if its voluntary and doesn’t guarantee support or anything? it took some playing around to figure out how i could even make it work from the western half of this rock we’re all stuck on

Hi @lkraav

There’s also that quantity field so you can multiply the sum.

Just to clarify. This does not contribute to development of proprietary components like Android AppSupport?

Actually i am willing to subscribe - but only if the C2 device supports Volte in Germany for congstar.

i dont see how it could not. much of SailfishOS is proprietary, not just the-emulator-previously-known-as-aliendalvik.

I also have setup a monthly subscription. I really do help this will help to increase velocity to open sourcing the components

I understand that it may contribute to development of closed parts of Silica, etc and I am fine with that. My question was rather if this contributes to development of add-on components like AppSupport. I have no interest in supporting Android development for SFOS.

thats like picking one app you dont like and saying you dont want your money supporting, say, the sailfish-calculator app. ill make you a deal; the fiver you give will go to your favorite open source SFOS app, and the fiver that i give will go to configuring appsupport, and the next guy who donates will go towards modem config. i mean, theyre working on all these things anyway.

of course, if you decide not to support an alternative OS that makes even this token nod towards the reality of living in this nightmare android app hellscape we already live in, thats also fine.
