Jolla Phone update - Pre-orders shipping status and progress

No, if they wanted to, they could. They could hire workers for assembly and suddenly distribute all 15,000 phones to everyone, but guess what would come after that. You wouldn’t be able to balance the cancellation rates. For example, if they had shipped them all at once, you wouldn’t be able to silence the complaints about the camera dust issue. Some devices would have hardware problems from the assembly process, or some other electronic component in the phone could be defective, or proper quality testing might not have been done early enough. A lot of people who received their devices at that point would end up unhappy.

Think of it like Sailfish OS updates and how they let us try beta versions first. If they gave you everything all at once, you’d immediately start complaining like, “Oh, you broke my phone,” and so on.

In short, doing it in batches is more balanced both in terms of cost savings and production, and the moment things start going off the rails, they can step in and fix it right away. Whoever thought of that really thought it through well =)

No, they couldn’t hire workers for assembly and suddenly distribute 15k phones. Salo is not China. There might be more workers in a single Shenzhen factory than in the whole Finnish ICT sector.

Have you counted the number of different rooms visible in the photos from the factory? I think the number is one.

You can’t magically get a factory building and thousand skilled and orientated workers for one month and then just be able to pass them on to some next client. Salo is not Shenzhen.

What I’m saying is, if they had wanted to, they could have done it. Of course, I know they’re doing the assembly with a very small team.

I am happy to wait, knowing that issues are handled properly and that both hw/sw improvements are implemented. This even though extra waiting time is somehow a disapointment. I just cannot see it as sane pushing out very quickly a lot of units with the known dust issue just to call back them all later on, when a few weeks investigation and fixing the problem saved everyone for all of this. There may be other things also that may need a fix, even though reports are that this is a very solid product.

As far as to scaling up to fast, this is something that have caused many companies to go out of business never mind how good products they were selling. This due to lack of control over costs vs earnings and that unexpexted setbacks, bugs and recalls broke the whole business modell entirely.

I think this is basicly quite understandable for most people and even though time passing isn’t a pleasure, i would recommend a nice walk in the forrest screaming loud there rather than repeating the same sentiment over and over here at the forum against better knowing.

Just my opinion though, nothing wrong meant with it.

… and if they really REALLY wanted, they could’ve done a 100 million phones in a day, too. Or a billion. Yup.

There are various aspects involved, but one of them definitely is the fact that one can’t pull arbitrary number of functioning process lines suddenly out of thin air [and possibly make them disappear the next moment]. This is something shared by all manufacturing industries, as one can readily observe from various contemporary world news topics, too.

That wasn’t what I meant anyway, forget it.

Yeah, exactly. You’ve put into words exactly what I was trying to say. If they had rushed it, they would’ve brought a ton of trouble on themselves — loads of complaints, returns, cancellations, and so on. This way, things have been much more balanced. Maybe the delay will disappoint all of us, but definitely, let it come late as long as it comes solid and reliable.

Soooo… I got my Jolla phone!!! I had planned to go to Day1 celebration but had to cancel it, on the day itself I thought maybe I could still catch the tail end of the event (and even messaged Sami) but the flight ended up delayed by an hour and the baggage claim took even longer. So I relegated myself to the back of the queue (since I’m in batch 3) and waited patiently.

These fine Jolla folks saw my comment above and messaged me and said, hey you can pick up your phone at the office since yours was tagged for Day1. Ahhhhh… silly me, trying not to be a nuisanse by bothering them with my messages when I could have simply asked and gotten it much much earlier! :woman_facepalming:

Better late than never! While picking up the phone (luckily I live close by) I got a chance to catch up with the lovely sailors, and watch the office turned into a shipping operation. They apologized for the mess and I’m like no this is so great to see! It’s a continuous process by a small team to take care of each shipment with care. Every device flashed, tested, packaged, labelled, checked against the orders, bundled with the accessories, applied shipping labels, and boxed up for courier pickup. I almost wanted to jump in and help but I’ll probably mess something up in the intricate operation

Anyway, didn’t want to make this post too long, just wanted to thank the Jolla sailors and reassure those who haven’t received their phones… they are on the way! Gradually but surely, handled with love and care, sealed with a kiss (ok maybe not the last part). :heart_hands:

Apart from what Jolla could have done or not, they are also dependent on how the supply contract was made up. My guess is that they have a structure based on batches and minimum numbers.

So, Batch 1 fully pre-sold: order goes out. Etc. This means that they probably don’t get all the phones at once anyway.

 Who’s the person sealing the phones?

By the way, thanks again for such great feedback. I follow you on Instagram, and you and many other former Nokia employees may not be actively working on Jolla anymore, but the loyalty you still have toward the company and the love you feel for it are something else. The fact that Nokia and Jolla are such human-centered companies really means a lot. Thank you so much =)

Aawh, that’s soooo nice of everybody to assemble for a happy foto - except - ah zut, who’s the igno-, eh, concentrated guy in the back?
(possibly the kiss-sealer  )

the photo is opt-in! I’m pleasantly surprised so many decided to join in, and total respect for those who continue their diligent work incognito, including the kiss-sealer  ok I was really joking about the last part but maybe it’s a feature request they can implement :face_blowing_a_kiss:

That’s meaningful indeed! I’m really fortunate to have worked in these 2 companies, and treasure the connections that still remains even when we don’t work together anymore. And of course the wonderful community is also part of this big Jolla family :heart_hands:

I was really wondering when i can expect for my phone to be shipped/delivered. Should be somewhere in september, but would really love to have some more information. Order number is #320XX

Welcome. Is this last days of April order number your preorder or your final payment order number? Independent of which of them it is, according to official communications add at least 30 days to whatever delivery period you heard when preordering. And to be properly prepared for a potential is-it-already-here -surprise take the last day of the month you end up in and add 1.

You should search for a Tracker topic. And prepare preorder number not order.

EDIT: added a link to it.
