That’s subjective. For me, it is not a critical feature at all.
Talking of history… Welcome to my ignore list.
Beside the shit talk can you give an explanation why all the people using Linux -which we can assume are not the sheeps that use Win or Mac OS- haven’t flocked on SFOS as their mobile os of choice?
There cant be only 10-20K linux users alone? Right?
Shit what?
No. I don’t give anything. Not even that. I am out of this discussion.
Because the application situation is unsurprisingly a lot more challenging with a super niche OS that makes Desktop Linux appear like big mainstream.
If even Windows Phones couldn’t make it, it really needs hard political necessities for a new mobile OS to lift off, like with Harmony OS (but also only where that political lift actually matters, in the West it is also pretty much a failure). Thing is, we really should have something on the shelf for becoming a European Harmony OS, when we suddenly find ourselves in dire need for it.
Cool. Next time come around with arguments.
You can mitigate it in some ways and obviously nothing is for everyone. But you at least need to have some basic functionality.
What do you consider basic?
For me basic means making phone calls, sending text messages, reading emails. Then we can add listening to music, browsing the web, taking photos and videos.
If you consider bowing down to the corporate overlords as basic, then we’re speaking different languages.
I don’t own a Sailfish device yet but if I would not believe it to deliver to me the functionality I need from a smartphone I would not have ordered the Jolla Phone.
You cannot offer the functionality that mainstream users (understandably) demand. For example compatibility with all banking and strict DRM apps that Anroid and iOS offer. It is just not possible, not even a giant like Huawei can pull that off (even though they are big enough to get already some native apps of that kind developed by said banks etc).
As i usually say my benchmark is -beside phone capabilities- normal linux distro capabilities. Ie be able to do what i do on my normal distro on my laptop.
In my opinion no mobile OS exists that meets your requirements for “basic”.
Sailfish OS does not try to be a Desktop OS and in my opinion it also should not.
If you’re looking for a phone-sized laptop, there are chinese manufacturers who do such. A phone is not a laptop, there are limits.
You can use a terminal, watch movies/series/whatever. If you want something like Android’s desktop mode or Samsung DeX, you can request it and maybe fund Jolla so they can make it a reality.
Its a functionality metric not form factor.
Ie. as we know the browser is useless. On my laptop i can browse any site without ads and also use my bank and broker.
Localization works. On SFOS is problematic.
And of course there are many stuff that i like on how they work on my laptop (ie systemd-homed) that might not be so obvious to the end user but i am sure would enhance SFOS if used. (but thats secontary at this point)
That’s probably because you don’t contribute. ![]()
Yeah obviously i could have just added my native language on XT9 and didn’t because i am lazy or something.
Browser, now we are talking about a reasonable arguments. I lack experience and expertise on that matter but it appears to be one of the central weaknesses that should be a priority to fix. But are there foundational complications that make it so hard to catch up to supported Gecko engines or is it simply the lack of resources?
I am looking forward to seeing how bad it really is. There is still the plan B of going android browser but obviously that is not the ideal solution.
Browser is a huge challenge. Also an old topic so you can find reasons and struggle if you’ll search for it.
Probably the main problem with lack of progress is nobody’s on it as their only priority. I bet the people that know enough to get it done are spread thin between multiple targets.
Xt9 is a whole different and proprietary matter. Nothing we, Jolla or any one can do about any more. I don’t know what your native language are, but what I was talking about was contributing translations to Sailfish OS and/or all the countless apps in ecosystem.
I didn’t mean to step on your toes. I just think that you are a bit unfair to Jolla and this unique collaborative project that Sailfish actually is.
Localization isn’t just translations. There are other areas that are problematic. Ie. it be nice to know how to add a language/layout to the HW keyboard list. I suspect word suggestion -official- will come through pressage at some point but at the moment the whole situation is a bit vague.
There are quite a few instances i can think of that jolla actions -for whatever reason- left a sour taste to the community (devs or other type of contributors).
I don’t expect every relationship to be perfect but for sure things could be much better.
