Jolla Phone update - deliveries started and other next steps

Hi there,

On December 5, 2025 as we launched the Jolla Phone project and started to take pre-orders, we were somewhat nervous here at the Jolla Tampere office and uncertain what is ahead of us.

Thus we launched with a condition that if there would be 2,000 of you out there to commit and pay 99€ downpayment, Jolla in turn commits to make the product. With an utmost overwhelming response, interest and passion, the first 2,000 backers committed to the project in less than 48hrs. What a start!

Back in December we gave a target to start shipping the Jolla Phone by end of July 2026. We set a target that was very ambitious and we can think many doubted whether we’ll make it in time or is the project once again one of those promises by a tech company making an unrealistic target for itself and an over-promise to its customers.

But we did it - with professional excellence, with utmost stretching by many from the Jolla team and with a trust & support from the Jolla community we delivered! A week ago, on July 8, we started to deliver the Jolla Phone to the first customers  :flexed_biceps:

July 8 was a big day in the Jolla Phone project - the Day1 when we delivered the very first phones for backers who had chosen to come pick up their phone in person from Helsinki on this very day - and oh boy it was a great day for all of us, please join the Day1 specific discussions at the forum post from last Friday.

If you missed the stream, or want to recap it, here are the links in PeerTube and YouTube.

Delivery status update

Let’s recap and walk thru what happens next. So, last week we delivered the first 400+ units for those who had registered and came to the event to pick up. Naturally, there were some no shows (as always) and as those units had been already prepared, labeled for the specific customer and nicely packed for the event, we’re now shipping those starting today  - so in case you had registered to the event, you’ll be receiving a tracking link soon :victory_hand: and you may expect these to take this week to process thru.

In parallel, we’ll start shipping Batch #1 in the order of the orders - there were a whopping 2,700 (amazing!) of you in the Batch #1 so this will take some time, expect it to take 2-3 weeks - so please bare with us and rest assured, you will be served!

As usual, please refrain from sending email to us in regards - we still get a lot emails where the answer can be found (or if not directly found, easily asked) here at the forum

Batch #2 and Batch #3

The Batches #2 and #3 will take us to 10,000 units in total, which is a lot to deliver and while we’re ramping up our resources all the time, it will take some time.

As communicated throughout the program, Batch #2 will start shipping 2-4 weeks after the Batch #1 - so, counting on that and the current operation being ramped up we may be able ship some early Batch #2 units still by end of July but expect the bulk of the Batch #2 to deliver in early to mid August.

Batch #3 we will target to start shipping by end of August.

Snow White Jolla Phone and TOH - backorder

There was a last-minute manufacturing issue with the Snow White The Other Half (TOH) and those didn’t make it to the event last week. We should receive the Snow White TOHs next week from the supplier. Customers who have ordered the Jolla Phone in Snow White colour will be shipped the Jolla Phone with The Orange TOH (with no extra cost) for the time being and the Snow White TOH as backorder. Correspondingly, if you have ordered the extra Snow White TOH you’ll get it as backorder (with no extra cost).

Device and software highlights

There has been a lot of interest towards the function and highlights of the new Jolla Phone and the specifics of the SW release (Sailfish OS 5.2) delivered with the phone. Let’s take some highlights:

Sailfish OS 5.2

  • AppSupport (to run Android apps on Sailfish OS) was bumped up to Android 15 apps and API level 35
  • The long-awaited Sailfish native browser was updated to Gecko ESR115 rendering engine
  • The Start-up Wizard got major improvements enabling super easy installation of microG: a free-as-in-freedom open source re-implementation of the Google proprietary services (needed for quite many apps such as banking). Note that you can always bypass this and go without - you’re in full control as always with the Jolla Phone :+1:
  • As promised, users can unlock the Jolla Phone bootloader. A corresponding menu item can now be found at the System Settings / Developer tools
  • Users can do factory reset from the System Settings
  • Users can enter the recovery mode with the volume up key + power key combination
  • Flashable images and fastboot will be provided (coming soon)
  • The initial version of the Privacy Switch was implemented. The function is end user configurable and to start with, the users can control e.g. Bluetooth, WLAN, Location and AppSupport status with the switch. Further implementations are coming and the framework is available for community contributions.

We’re targeting to roll-out the first SW update within a week. It will be a minor release addressing mainly production related issues, and some end user features. The next update is targeted to end of July - early August for which we closely follow the forum and we try take in the ones that are most critical and feasible to do in this short period of time. If some bug is really itching you, it helps greatly to report those directly to our GitHub issue or to Forum :victory_hand:

Known issues (not to replace the Release Notes, just highlights):

  • Cameras are not fully tuned, resulting occasionally to lower-than-expected performance, in particular depending on the lightning conditions. Also getting the focus is occasionally too slow. Sailfish native camera is fully open source and it would deserve some nice OSS contributions :heart_hands:
  • Some chargers may fail to charge, in particular PD 3.0 ones - consider using non-PD chargers for the time being while we are fixing this issue
  • For those whom it concerns, Google Maps and MS Teams call audio doesn’t work in AppSupport - being investigated
  • Battery consumption has received a bit contradicting reports: some users observing high consumption while many reporting very good usage times - issue is being investigated
  • Applying the TOH Ambience & Ringtones automatically does not work yet - meanwhile users can download the Ambience packages from the Jolla Store. Please seek for the Jolla Ringtones Project.

Please see full list at the Sailfish OS 5.2.0.13 Release Notes.

Jolla Phone hardware

  • During the latest design improvements in May-June we were able to revise the design to a user-replaceable camera lens. This can come handy over time if your lens gets scratched or otherwise damaged. The corresponding camera lens spare part set will be made available shortly in the Jolla Shop
  • The Jolla Phone battery is user-replaceable and the Jolla Original battery pack will be made available shortly in the Jolla Shop
  • iFixit contributor frengel made a super cool tear-down (and assembly, with success  ) of the Jolla Phone right at the Day1 event sun terrace, followed live by tens of community members. Check out the instructions here.
  • Jolla Phone sales package naturally came public at the Day1 event too. Please note we don’t include charger or USB cables to the sales package anymore - instead we recommend to have a closer look at the Welcome Card and find cool applications for it
  • Further, a custom Jolla Headset (USB-C) is coming up - stay tuned for it in August!

The Other Half (TOH)

TOH is a unique feature of Jolla Phones, originally introduced back in 2013 already. Within the new Jolla Phone we decided to target I3C interface for The Other Half. Recently we found a hardware bug at the sub-board (where the TOH i/f is managed) which limits the capability to I2C only. Thus, the TOH interface itself works but only on I2C mode for now and a revised sub-board will be applied in future batches from August onwards. We ask those customers who concretely need specificly I3C interfacing (e.g. for I3C specific TOH experimenting) to be in contact with shop@jolla.com - please keep in mind that most use cases you can still prototype with I2C.

A limited edition backcover - Special TOH - was promised for the first 10,000 backers of Jolla Phone project. Within Day1 we unveiled the Special TOH, Inari Blue, with unique LED lightning and a specific set of ringtones and Inari Blue ambience. The Special TOH won’t be available for sale and remains as a special appreciation and memorablia for all you who made this project possible - Thank You!

The Jolla Phone is available in three distinct colours / TOHs: The Orange, Kaamos Black and Snow White. To celebrate the new era, we also made some special effort and ordered a composition of songs representing each colour on the way see it - thus the Jolla songs for The Orange, Kaamos Black and the Snow White were born.

The songs were then used as a basis and inspiration for a set of corresponding ringtones and genuine ambiences to match each colour.

You can now find the downloadable package of ringtones and ambiences with the Jolla Store by seeking for the Jolla Ringtones Project. The songs will be published also soon in the Jolla Store.

Picks from the forums and FAQ

The Jolla community and the forum is almost an indefinite source of information and help for all interested on Sailfish OS, Jolla and anything related. To pick a few hot topic links & discussions we recommend checking out at least these topical ones for now:

A Top3 FAQ question we get at the moment is whether my bank app work on the new Jolla Phone? Please see (and kindly contribute to) the Banking apps on Sailfish thread.

We truly recommend checking out this great unboxing and first time use video by Quixotic Penguin - a first time Sailfish OS user!

Thank you for the way you decided to solve the Snow White supply issue and for not having us wait for the TOHs being shipped from the supplier !

How do I know my order number? In the confirmation email it is stated to be 4000 something, but that can’t be since it is batch #1. Is there an offset?

Is this something foreseen that we can replace the sub-board for i3c ourselves? I will not be likely in need of this soon but I will feel rather sad if there are some TOHs that I cannot use properly (or at all) because I can only use i2c interface…

I think orders started around 4200 if I’m not mistaken.

Whatever the case might be, I would highly prefer to swap that myself in 5 minutes instead of sending the phone back and having no phone for weeks.

Thanks for that information, then I can expect to be very early in the queue, so exciting

Jolla, is there any chance that Batch 4 will be affected by this? I’m expecting a definitive answer on this.

This right here is super way to communicate things, thank you for this update! Amazing news, can’t wait my device!

Any advise to those who didn’t order gorilla glass or the protective cover because of hoping for a wallet case to appear before delivery time, and who now are thinking whether they should order the glass and cover separately? If ordered now, can those still be added to the same delivery with the phone?

Whoa, I just noticed this new category for official “blog” posts! How cool

According to frengel’s instructions on iFixIt, replacing the sub-board shouldn’t be too difficult. (EDIT: steps 9, 10 and 11 may not be needed when only replacing the I2C/I3C sub-board)

Therefore, I would be happy to eventually receive a replacement board that I can mount myself. This would be the easiest solution for Jolla.

Hi @demislition ,
We’ll do our best to bundle orders and refund extra shipping costs. So, yes you can purchase on top of your existing Jolla Phone order.

Did i understand that i will receive that blue case with my white case as being in patch 1? Is there date when we receive these cases? Am not in hurry the black case is fine for me.

Blue case is included for batches 1 to 3 (approximately first 10000 pre-orders). As far as I understood, if it will be in stock – it will be included into the same parcel as phone itself

There is no blue case.
There is a special edition TOH (inari blue) only for the first 10.000 orders and it’s not available for purchase.

Yeah but it was not included in the release event when i received the phone

Same here, of course I want to future proof my Jolla even if the replacement board wouldn’t be necessary right now. Maybe there could be an email to all who have the defective version of the board when the replacements are available and it would have two options; one to send the phone for repair and other to order the replacement board to be delivered to the user if they are comfortable with changing it themselves. And then of course if you don’t want to get the board replaced because sending the phone away for repair would take too long and you are not willing to do the replacement by yourself, just ignore the email notification and continue using the phone as is
