Jolla Phone : First Experiences, Pros and Cons

I know I may have opened this thread a bit early, but please excuse that. I’m already curious about your experiences and the pros and cons. And if possible, I haven’t seen a video demonstration of the privacy button — does it really cut off the camera and microphone?

Additionally = How is its performance compared to the Xperia 10 III? I’m waiting for your reactions.

Not much experience yet for me except that it feels good in hand, but about the privacy switch, it can be configured from system settings -choice between 7 options from “turn off mic” to “disable appsupport”. There is a new system update available as well. I had some issues with using the PS with one hand -thumb is also pressing on/off button.

Can users somehow configurate the privacy switch themself? I mean, can user create custom functionalities?

At 1st glance, I would say no…at least I dont see any option for that

Obviously its a bit early yet, but I guess what a lot of people might want to know is whether it suffers from those types of problems that have remained unresolved on the Sony Xperia phones, in some cases for years (so OOM killing apps frequently on the 10 iii, disappearing sound, echo in calls, camera issues when the subject is moving, Office365 synchronisation issues, increased battery drain, screen brightness issues, internet access disappearing on going from WLAN to mobile data and vice/versa, poor displayed signal strength, etc, etc).

The big hope here is that, because Jolla are more in control of this phone, they’ve managed to either fix these types of issues, or avoid them in the first place.

So far quite pleased, nice tutorial in the beginning and asks if you want to enable appsupport. At least my banking apps work, i managed to log in to Finnish HSL application(commuting).
Synced my calendar from gmail with contacts without a hustle. Whatsapp works but got in trouble when a friend shared he’s location. if i opened that particular discussion the app moved me back to the main screen.

Currently i am super pleased, and my future plan is to switch services away from google and i hope i would get native apps instead of using appsupport.

But in general my 15h lasting sailfish journey has been really enjoyable.

Found this website somewhere in this forum and would love to see it updated, looks quite nice and it is a nice way to check applications =)

Have a nice day, hope to hear about other peoples experiences too!

Many of those issues are actually porting issues. So they need to be solved on each HW platform more or less independently.

C2 is not exactly a performant speedhorse but I don’t experiance those. The most annoying ones are that sometimes BT or WLAN are stuck. But no data loss and workarounds are trivial anyway.

So I’m pretty sure that JP2 will show it’s nature😉 soon.

Notch visuals, I hope!, are still wip.

Devops: systemd-resolved ships with DNSSEC enabled, if you run any split horizon DNS you might need to create /etc/systemd/resolved.conf [Resolve] DNSSEC=no

Also, no resolvectl installed, how come @Keto?

My 50 € aftermarket X5 II burner phone from 2021 on LOS 23 / A16 scrolls everything smoother than this 500 € (currently 700 €) J2 device. Whatever Wayland issue this is, just haven’t received attention. Esp. noticeable in Browser.

EDIT Settings and People app with long lists are fairly smooth, but of course super simple content… maybe it’s predominantly Browser, will continue to monitor.

AAS is bumped to A15 in SFOS 5.2! Didn’t see that coming, strong move!

Wifi ON, battery dropped 62% → 60% in ~9h overnight sleep. Not bad!?

Great link + approach, thanks ! Should be promoted indeed … :+1:

Browser not using hardware acceleration, maybe?

Seems GOOD, even considering the large battery!

AAS support for 15 was a nice thing. Hidden gem. Also eith AS thete is microg coming .
Note : need to allow " permission to be/ to show on top of other apps" , from.microg settings.
So far only basics done with J2 . Camera seems focusing ok now ( compared to Experia 10II)
Browser , have not so far found issues.

It feels very snappy. Recent SFOS phones I tried reacted with a notable delay to my input. Nothing too annoying, but noticeable anyway. The J2 has much less input lag.
The other half that came with the phone is a bit flimsy. It bends on the thin part, where the buttons are. So when removing it, I’d start at the notch on the bottom, and then moving to the side, and remove it from there, so there is no bend in the middle. I think the back covers will easily break.
The limited edition The Other Half provided at the party seems a lot sturdier. So I think it is something that can be mitigated in design. I hope there will be a way to turn off the pulsing light soon, because it is very cool, but not in your pocket, and not when you are trying to sleep. I’ll keep the The Orange on most of the time I think.
Also, black is not really black. Does this have an LCD display? Because it looks like I have a black light on at the black parts as well.

Overall, I think this is the best, most bug free, most polished launch of a SailfishOS device since a long long time. But it is based on a very limited time using the device. Let’s see.

To answer your specific questions:
Pros:

  • Very fast
  • Fast GPS fix
  • No obvious bugs or flaws
  • Good iFixit guide already available

Cons:

  • Physically weak TOH provided with the phone. Be careful when removing it. This is not a general TOH flaw, just something about the provided cover

The privacy switch should not have been named as such. It is a software configurable switch. You can link it to privacy features like turning off microphone or AppSupport. But it is a software switch.
It is a nice thing to have, but it does not physically cut anything. If you want to have your camera not working, buy a 10V
I think I will have it turning on and off my VPN service.

< attempted joke>On first boot up, there’s this screen where you have to accept a 3 month NDA to continue using the phone :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: < /attempted joke>

Can somebody provide a camera and video review? I cannot find any proper photo samples online?

I want to see anything at this point as well, but guys, it’s still the middle of the week!
I’m sure many already feel super hyped and they want to use the device themselves, but many probably can’t due to work and responsibilities.
Let’s give people some time instead of stressing them more

Why is an NDA necessary for a product that has been advertised and sold to the general public via their website?

This seems somewhat strange.

EDIT: There was nothing on their website to say in advance that if you bought their product it would be subject to a three month non-disclosure agreement.

And by the time you’ve booted it up, its too late because you’ve already bought it if you weren’t prepared to accept the NDA.

That’s not legal here in the UK - all the terms of the contract have to be available in advance of the purchase and brought to the attention of the purchaser.

EDIT 2: Oh, I now see it was an attempted joke. I agree with the emphasis on ‘Attempted’ and not on ‘Joke’. Stick with your day job!
