No, I’m the designer of the controller chips.
Actually 2G takes really little band. It should and probably will remain for low-bandwidth, low-cost applications such as IoT and monitoring devices.
This differs a lot from the Jolla’s goal of 2000 devices needed in order to produce batch #1.
Would be nice to read the article, but TS doesn’t seem to sell a single article…only costly month payment.
On a side note…
Are you people sure that this is a Volte thread?
No, it’s a 3.5mm-jack thread ![]()
Sadly in some countries, anything done on bank website needs to be confirm on the official bank app on a smartphone.
Indeed, this is often the case.
But they also sometimes have app-less solutions they don’t like to talk about.
By insisting (or threatening a bank change or legal action in extreme cases), they suddenly find solutions as SMS codes or external devices to identify, reported some users.
I had the case and they accepted to re-activate the SMS identification.
This is one of many problems I have encountered, and I have always been looking for a competitor that does not require such technical nonsense.
For example, TOTP via email is a no-go and is rejected; password managers are available for this purpose. I also reject half-hearted apps from banks, insurance companies, and the like, and only use web portals via my workstation. After all, I have to finance and provide the end device in order to use these crappy apps. If this is not possible with institution A, I simply switch to B, C, or D.
They want my money and my data, so they have to give me access via proper web user interfaces. Otherwise a competitor will do for sure.
Interesting! The Other Half has made a comeback!
Now the very very strict limit is set to 10000 units (until it’s overrun with few thousands…) ![]()
It IS soooooo nice to see that this Jolla Phone is becoming a success story ![]()
It would be great if fastboot flashing was available for the new Jolla Phone from day 1.
Perhaps, it would also allow to avoid problems with user password reset (like with the original Jolla Phone)
I think they have learned it from the C2-start-problems. I would bet, it will be possible.
Oh yes, about flashing, etc:
The ability to reflash or fully clone/restore SFOS on a device is absolutely important IMHO.
Very handy, quick and easy once you got the trick.
For example, on the XA2 (and other probably), we can clone the whole phone into an image file.
Then, we can restore it on another one, and voilà, got a backup 40€ phone.
It would be excellent to have that possibility on the J2.
Also mentioned by The Linux Experiment…
@Jolla Please confirm if the phone will have proper (voice!) VoLTE support (hopefully with major carriers), as this isn’t mentioned in the specs, and not having it would render the phone basically useless.
The Physical Privacy Switch is pointless if it can be customised in software (and so bypassed by malware). If you can’t change this, then at least allow it to be used for non-security things, e.g. Rotation Lock switch, Do Not Disturb mode, …
I’ll add my voice to those that hate the Notch. Hopefully Sailfish OS will have an option to turn that into an unused black bar, with the actual status bar below it (the screen is more than long enough).
I also really hope you provide a thick case that’s the same thickness as the Camera Bump, so the back of the phone is flat & can be rested on the table for stable typing (like I am now).
I don’t care about it being specifically waterproof (and that seems unlikely with the removable back). I used to be a 3.5mm jack fan, but have learned to live without one on my latest phone.
I’m hoping you can make further improvements to Sailfish OS (perhaps a poll would be in order?). e.g. It would be great to get support for FIDO2 USB or NFC keys (like from Yubico) added to the web browser & Android AppSupport.
Now batch #3 is available at a price at 579€. Now it is starting to become close enough to the full price so that there is less benefit of a pre-order.
What is the goal here, to sell as many as possible but for a less profit in order to have a larger user base or is it to cover the manufacturing costs by a greater margin? I can see benefits with both, I’m kinda of leaning to undercut the phones a little bit more in order to potentially get more users. This is especially beneficial if Jolla is going to have updates based on a subscription. What do you think is a better move here?
The retail price isn’t settled yet, they quote from €599-€699, so there’s still potentially a €120 saving to be made. Plus maybe with a bigger pre-order, they can push for better prices and improve the specs?
The subscription choice is purely optional, you do not have to pay anymore for updates.
Jolla is not Santa Claus. They must earn money. The start promotion was a nice move for the community = the regular people here in this forum. Thanks for this and now the normal days have to start.
Your information isn’t up-to-date. Subscription is optional to support Sailfish development beyond purchasing a device, see: Sailfish OS voluntary subscription
Although the pre-order page already displays some phone specifications, I still hope for some changes.

I believe many people want a lighter phone, not a thinner one. The protruding rear camera is unsightly. Furthermore, the recessed design at the top of the screen for the front camera is unnecessary; a pop-up camera would be better. The rear camera doesn’t need to protrude either. The protrusion makes it difficult to place the phone properly on a table, as there’s a concern about scratching the camera.

I wonder if the Jolla Phone, like Apple phones, can be used globally, given the different network standards across the world. If it doesn’t support global network standards like Apple phones, could the website list which networks it supports?

I’ve seen some websites say the Jolla Phone only supports GPS and not GLONASS, BDS, or GALILEO. I don’t know if this is true. If it is, “Your Phone Shouldn’t Spy on You” will just be an empty slogan.
Why? Please elaborate. Thx.
They’re wrong. The Jolla Phone is based on a yet undisclosed Mediatek platform that supports 5G and Wifi 6. That means Dimensity 7030 and upwards, or any 8000 series. All these SoC support GPS, QZSS, BeiDou, Glonass, Galileo, NavIC, as you can check on the table in Wikipedia List of MediaTek systems on chips - Wikipedia
We don’t know about the software support but at least the hardware allows it.
