Jolla Phone : First Experiences, Pros and Cons

Well, yes, but keeping in mind it is not finished yet.
Ymmv on the UX, and depending on what one needs, for the time being.

Some calibration issues are under investigation.

Statement from Jolla here.

This isn’t a case of such extreme color shift; I’m definitely getting deep blacks on the screen. The defects are really concentrated in the microcontrast and saturation.

Try also changing the protocol if it’s dual try IP (or maybe ipv6) and vice versa (ideally do the tests with wlan off as remember someone mentioning their mms got routed through wifi and that could also impact it)

Sound to me as two different things…

I tried that, turned wifi off, changed protocol.for MMS, tried again, same issue. Could my phone have a hardware issue? Can anyone in Sweden use MMS?

Not at all. It’s most likely either error in MMS config for your operator (which you can fix it yourself) or IPv4/v6 issue with your operator (workaround available).

I think this discussion should move to it’s own thread…

After using Jolla Phone 2026 for a while, I think it’s great for me. Most of basic features are very functional, although “draw curtain” from the top of the UI is a bit far-fetched idea considering how many menu items there could be and some apps go even further to have also the bottom draw menu.

Android apps like Signal, Firefox with extensions, Aegis Authenticator etc. seem to work fine. Downloaded / MTP transferred extra software like File Manager will install itself from the package nicely by just using the UI. I was half-expecting the need to go for the command line here, nice that I was wrong.

Camera, e-mail, gallery etc. function as they should and will integrate with Android apps (e.g. gallery image sharing works with Signal).

Phone GPS navigation seems to work without a hitch, tested it with 500km drive using Pure Maps-navigator (with all location services enabled except no OSM Scout Server). One drawback is that Jolla store does not package TTS-support for some weird reason and I haven’t yet bothered to install Text-To-Speech manually.

For the average user, I’d say Jolla Phone is not yet ready for primetime, as it requires a fair amount of software to be installed manually. However, just combining three different app stores into a single store and pre-installing most of the common apps that users expect would go a long way towards making Jolla a true Android alternative for everyone.

I’m looking forward to comparing day-to-day Jolla usage to Commodore Callback, but as both will run Sailfish, there might not be that many differences…

So yeah, my rating is thumbs up, great phone.
(cough except WLAN hidden SSID functionality cough)

Just curious:

How do you actually migrate SIGNAL to the Jolla Phone 26?
Via a backup file? Or how?

I think this is the thread @kari.einamo was thinking of (they’re different issues): Display is not colour-managed — vendor sRGB colour mode exists but Sailfish never selects it

Thanks for the review. I think I will wait a while before placing an order for the Jolla 2601.

There is a forum thread about that, I’ll see if I can find that again tomorrow.

Short version:

  • Create local backup in signal on the old phone (write down the encryption key!).
  • Copy over the backup folder to the new phone (or use an SD card). You may need to do some chmod/chown.
  • Restart AppSupport. Then open Signal on the new phone and go through the registration process. It will prompt you to select the backup file location.

@jwalesch I was thinking of these threads:

Turns out I was confusing Signal with Whatsapp, the latter is more picky about UID/GIDs but Signal is straightforward because it has a proper backup/restore function built-in. Just put in an SD card, point Signal on your old phone to backup there, then put the SD card in your new phone, start Signal and it should ask if you want to restore.

Good luck!

I’m adding nextcloud task sync and pantry sync to fiat agenda. the app is available in chum and open repos, it just hasn’t updated there with the nexcolud sync, but it’s coming, and it will have an up to date version on both so you won’t be needing to know where it was installed from  Otherwise Storeman will tell you when you’ve got updates

also for some reason despite the fact that I changed the default search engine to Kagi, it still sends me to Ecosia when I search for things through the search bar

I cannot find Kagi in the browser settings on the list where you can select a search engine. How did you set the search engine?

if you search something with kagi first and then go to search engine settings it will appear there. the problem i mentioned fixed itself after me switching search engines back and forth. but then i gave up and installed firefox anyway

After using the phone as my daily driver, for more than 3 months, fully natively, without AAS, I have to say I am feeling to start pretty comfortable in the Sailfish OS universe.

I am really impressed with the progress being made in this short time. Jolla apears to have set a lot of the right priorities. Especially with the browser which I think is crucial for an OS where in many cases the browser is the alternative to apps that may not exist natively. ESR115 is already working much better than expected. With the currently worked on upgrade it should finally break into a fully up to date state. Looking very much forward to it.

For the camera, which does not yet use its full potential, a lot is happening on the community side. I have tested the stock app and rawfish now for a while. For fast snapshots, insufficient light and difficult focusing, I find the stock app still more suitable. For everything else it pretty much is rawfish. Just make sure to get the alpha 3 version as the alpga 4 version has an issue with extremely long picture taking times.

I have also tried to move from apps to browser. I have made shortcuts to the app grid and moved them to a separate folder to use them like apps. Currently I have 5 shortcuts that could be used also with Android apps.

For example Finnish railway operator VR has an app which does not bring anything more than website for me. With an Android app with AAS I cannot select the seat. That feature works flawless in the browser.

Fantastic, thank you very much!

Hey,

I got my Jolla for three days now. i’m all for a european alternative. And i think that a linux based phone had the best chance of creating a good market.

The Jolla phone works pretty good i have to say. Bank apps work, bleutooth key for my car works, i got airprinting working (had to install with terminal), Hue, spotify, teams etc work. Navigation works, but is not accurate (accurate enough though).

Five small things that are not working or not working very good for so far.

  • For my work i use google drive. I can open files but working in the files is not going to well
  • Connecting to my audiolab media player doesn’t work. The app on the jolla phone cant find the player on the network.
  • Same goes for tv remote app. Somehow the app cant find the tv on the network.
  • Some sites dont work as smooth. The image sometimes “shakes”, and scrolling is not that smooth sometimes. (I use vivaldi and the native browser).
  • Sometimes apps like podimo dont refresh smoothly.

Iin my opinion….we as customers have to take those small things for granted if we want to give a european alternative a chance. Patience and not expecting the phone to be as good as an iphone or samsung is an investment of the european customer. A company as Jolla needs this invesment from customers to grow.

Jolla has delivered a good phone that can be used as a daily driver. I’m very happy with the phone
