Jolla Phone : First Experiences, Pros and Cons

I don’t know anything about your media player, but try the native app Jupii. It does incredible things with network audio

Works great!! Thanks

Heya,

Got mine last week !

While I haven’t yet used it as a phone (very busy lately and no time at all to really move apps and data from my previous phone) I’m very happy with how my initial tinkering looks.

There are of course things that I’d like to improve (more on that below) but overall AppSupport is very well integrated and there’s always the workaround to dropping into an Android app. Obviously, it helps that I had already transitioned most of my current phone to F-Droid and other apps, so I don’t have a lot of big dependencies on Google Play.

The nice things are : native Wireguard integration ! native terminal, with Linux below ! Email, CalDav/CardDav from my self-hosted Radicale server work flawlessly ! Media controls work even from an F-Droid app.

I think so far my big “workarounds” where I need an Android app are :

  • I’d like to use a native browser because the UX is way better integrated… but uBlock Origin is not available. I hadn’t been exposed to the “real” state of the web in a while, and had to switch to Fennec from F-Droid.
  • The UX of ichthyosaurus’ “To-Do” app is great—I find it integrates fantastically well with the rest of the system… but all my tasks are stored with a VTODO CalDav synchronization. Tasks dot org from F-Droid it is until there is a native option that supports it.

The big things I’m missing are:

  • I haven’t found yet a good option to access SFTP or SMB shares with a good file browser UI (in progress, need to settle on an option).
  • No way to construct a screen with widgets and app icons always at the same place. The current home screen moves and resizes all the time, and I’m usually a bit lost using it—especially given half of it is running F-Droid apps with no possible interaction except opening them.
  • Not a big thing, but I would love to have more control over permissions, notably on-demand file access is a big improvement from introduction of SAF in Android. I’m not sure it is easily achievable, but maybe there are plans.

Once I move my data I’ll write other messages when I’ve had more time with it as a real daily driver, but overall it’s a solid step towards having more alternatives!

I agree. As a developer it would be nice to be able to configure sandboxing such way that the user could decide the level of permissions and depending on that some features were hidden. Like in my Fastchess application that could mean

  • If no Internet access, user cannot play the game with two devices.
  • If no file access, the user cannot design their own pieces

Hi,

I investigated the same Bluetooth A2DP audio routing issue on my Jolla Phone 2026: after reconnecting, the device shows as connected, but media audio still plays through the phone speaker.

I traced it to missing device UUIDs in the OHM BlueZ5 plugin and developed an experimental fix for Sailfish OS 5.2.0.20.

Details, testing results and RPM:

Thanks. First, the thing with the additional fingerprints has been settled. No idea how, but it’s ok now. However, the lack of functionality of using fingerprints for passwordless logins in Android apps in app support still remains. If someone can briefly explain to me why this doesn’t work and whether there could be a solution to this, I would be very interested. Second, Rawfish looks like a very interesting beta. I’m keeping an eye on it. I just don’t understand why the quality of the camera is so bad and why you can’t switch between the two rear cameras with the included app nor select the resolution. I think that the functionality and quality mentioned is not sufficiently appropriate for a smartphone in this price range. The pictures all have color casts or are not correctly exposed. At first I thought it might be due to the screen and guessed that there was a lack of color management, but I looked at the photos on my PC and they are still there color-cast. I hope that this will develop in a positive direction. The screen itself looks very bright and colorful. I don’t think now, it’s a screen problem. :slightly_smiling_face: Addendum: Is there any confirmation that the screen covers sRGB or others?

Forum search will reveal some answers for you.

I live in Spain and use Android device for work (Microsoft 365) , public transport, maps, banking, email and messaging. My objective was to try to do the same with Jolla and no Google.

I think I am almost there. Today, after 3 days of receiving it, was the first day I took the Jolla instead of the android device when leaving home

What works:

Banking: Banc Sabadell & Bankinter Android apps

Work: Outlook Android app

Local transport: SMOU Android app

Maps: Osm Scout from Jolla Shop

Email: proton mail android app , and all the proton android apps (auth, drive, pass and VPN)

Messaging: Beeper Android app

Ente photos App from Ente web

What does not work yet

Travel Card T-Mobilitat

NFC payment

Fingerprint in Android apps

Proton Calendar

All in all very happy. Easier than I though

Very useful tools

  1. Amaze app on the Android device to fully export apk (splits

  2. Sai app from F-Droid on the Jolla to install the split apk

But…why you buy a Jolla phone and run only andoid apps?

Proton Calendar is not working? I use it all the time.

Good to know, because that is my main calendar and was shocked to read that experience xD

Great, do you use the bridge? or the Proton App? Thanks

I use Android apps when there are no alternatives…

VPN is built in (and when you run the Android app it’s definitely not working correctly, only the Android apps use the VPN connection if at all).

Proton mail can be get to work using a Proton Mail bridge, packaged on OpenRepos.

I guess you forgot to add in the native mail app. Because andy app works just doesn’t notify.

I use the Proton app.

Yeah, I’ve just woken up when I wrote that. One can even see that in the beautiful sentence structure. Some nice and proper Czech grammar in an English sentence.

Hello,
I live in Finland I got my Jolla phone about a week ago.
Pros:
I like the user interface.
Most apps I need work fine.
Cons:
Android apps (e.g. Nysse) don’t seem to have access to location data, whereas puremaps (native) does.
Mobilepay doesn’t work.

My issue with the Proton Mail Android app was that I got notification twice for each new email. One notification was titled that there is a new email from sender x and the other one the usual notification with the subject of the new email.

Now I have been using Proton in the native email app with Proton Bridge for a week and I love it. UX is clean and beautiful. Notifications don’t disappear with every AppSupport crash or reboot and everything is well integrated into the OS. I haven’t found any reason to switch back to the Android app so far.
