DESCRIPTION:
My existing Vodafone SIM card works with 5G on my previous phone (Sony Xperia IV running Android). In my Jolla 2026 phone however, I only get 4G; not 5G, even though I’ve set 5G preferred.
The same goes with my Odido SIM card: 5G on another (Android) phone, no 5G on my Jolla 2026 phone.
In short: Jolla 2026 phone does not appear to support 5G at all in the Netherlands, contrary to what its technical hardware specifications suggest.
PRECONDITIONS:
Vodafone SIM with 5G subscription in the Netherlands. Validated to be working fine with previous phone (Sony Xperia IV running Android).
Odido SIM with 5G subscription in the Netherlands. Validated to be working fine with previous phone.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Put Vodafone SIM or Odido SIM in Jolla 2026 phone
Automatically select network, or ..
.. manually select Vodafone NL or Odido
EXPECTED RESULT:
I expect the Jolla 2026 phone, which supports 5G according to specs, connects to the Vodafone or Odido 5G NL network.
ACTUAL RESULT:
The Jolla 2026 phone only shows Vodafone 4G NL or Odido with 4G. Speed tests show 4G speeds (less than 60Bmps).
Same here in Croatia, on Hrvatski Telekom network. On Sony Xperia 10 IV (stock android, not on Sailfish) I’m getting about 3/4 strength 5G signal, Jolla connects only with 4G.
I’m using Vodafone in the Netherlands. The 5G connection DOES actually work for me, but it seems to switch over to 5G much less often than it otherwise should. It’s usually on 4G, but it will sometimes flip to 5G. So it’s probably some config value thing.
Is it actual standalone 5G or LTE with added 5G capacity (non-standalone)? If you are on 4G with the possibility of adding a bit of 5G, but not currently using it, is that still 5G? Your operator probably thinks so, but does SFOS? Probably, but not guaranteed to work the same as e.g. Android…
After using it for a while, it seems it stays in 4G during low rate data transfer (or even standby) and jumps to 5G when actively transfering large data, like opening a site or downloading a large file.
That is very likely the NSA (Non Stand Alone) 5G that @attah wrote about. I guess that is also exactly how android does it too, android misleadingly naming always ‘‘5G’’ its connection for both stages (4G+5G move during high activity)
Note that for Stand Alone 5G (and opposed to NSA 5G) to work, it needs both to be supported by the operator (often as an optional paid option), and the device to be compatible.
When I test my speed, it remains below 60Mbps, meaning it’s actual 4G; not 5G masquerading as 4G. 5G gives speeds in the hundreds of Mbps. I get that if I put my SIM in another phone.
In other words: the Jolla 2026 atm does not support 5G contrary to what its hardware specs suggest.
Here is my 5G registration with vodafone NL while out and about today. It should be noted it was on 4G basically all the way to and from Schiphol, and only went on 5G after an hour and a half or something.
