Jolla Phone 2026 - batch 1 - Dust building up between front camera and screen glass

Oh man I have this happening to mine! How did you go about fixing this?

I’m maybe underthinking this greatly, but does this not seem like something that could be rectified with a little basic disassembly, a gental clean and estimated €0.30 O-ring sticker?

Absolutely.

In order for an O-ring to work it must be exactly of the same size and thickness. O-rings are in general made of hard rubber and cannot compress without considerable force. This is nothing new and other phone manufacturers have solved these issues not by a rubber O-ring but rather using a foam gasket which is more compressable. Some tapes are “fluffy” especially double sided tape and might be used for this and can be cut precisely in order to fit and it doesn’t need to round as a square perimeter would work as well. Double sided tape is however not good as the camera shouldn’t bond with the cover, so single sided “fluffy” tape is better.

If you found a good tape or other material, please let us know and tell use the brand and type.

It’s a bit of a miss from Jolla, however it is easily fixable at production.

By “o-ring”, I read “a gasket”…
But you are absolutely right.
A lightweight foam window seal and two cookie cutters (deepl for “emporte-pièces”) to cut a circle would do, for example (for a private diy, I mean).

Did MOST people voted for a smaller screen? I doubt. Most voted for a screen around 6" and I would say 6.36 is closer to 6 than to 5.

Jolla has to choose from what the market offers. And I fear that the availability of 5 inch screens is shrinking even further.

for 650 you can get a Moto Razr Flip 60 Ultra. look at the specs and compare to J2. No deal for me, sry, it’s over with SFOS for me. can’t go back, a lot of things changed in the last 10 years while SFOS still suffers the same issues.

There are a lot of people that expect the phone this week. It will help if the conversation continues on topic so we can see how widespread is the issue, possible solutions, and ultimately a reply from Jolla.

There are a lot of other topics (or maybe someone can start the 500th one) to discuss why you won’t be buying a j2 or why you give up sfos.
It will mean the world to me and probably for others as well if all these discussions move some place else and we can stay on topic here. It’s kinda relevant to us who bought the phone.

I totally understand that some feel the need to express their disappointment about anything in every active topic, but most of us REALLY don’t care to read about random personal preferences in topics that cover actual issues that happen to be actually relevant to us.

TLDR; If you can’t help or you don’t have anything to ask, maybe at least don’t add noise to waste everyone else’s time.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you Kanthal for this.
After this message everybody who posts off-topic should feel dozens of people staring at their neck.

Before the dust got into the smartphone case between the camera and the glass, I had planned to replace the glass back of my Jolla C2 with a self-made 3D-printed plastic back for three reasons:

However, it was still under warranty, so I waited until I had a legitimate reason to open it (dust). That turned out to be a good opportunity: I removed the glass backplate without damaging it, opened the device, and cleaned all the lenses of dust.

If it happens again, I’ll write a tutorial how to open the Jolla C2 here and/or on iFixit on how to do it.

You are discussing about Jolla C2 right? This topic is for JP26 and there might be people who would be interested about this in a C2 thread..

I mentioned doing this on my C2 in the OP, and willmason5 said that happened to his unit too, so I replied. Maybe there’s some misunderstanding, but then he could clarify that he already has the J2 and not the C2.

Everybody who bought the devices in one of three batches bought a new comming device. Jolla is a small company and it’s a nice try to develop a complicated device like a smartphone. We should be a little bit nicer

@widex yeps, I will keep my order as is. Whining - as always- won’t help. Jolla knows this issue and will do their best to adress it.

A lot has changed in 10 years, but has Jolla strayed from its path? — Never.

Good for you. The team to design a confirmation button for Android is probably larger than all of Jolla combined.

For monetizing data collected with the Moto Razr Flip 60 Ultra, shouldn’t it be cheaper than the Jolla-Phone hardware? But it isn’t—a bad deal.

Hello,

Thank you for the reports.

Currently we’re suspecting that in the reported cases the dust may have entered through the front camera assembly housing, or in addition through top microphone hole housing, which is missing a rubber sealing (which are supposed to be there) due to a manufacturing assembly error of the unit in case.

Let us firstly analyse what is the root cause and which manufacturing dates are affected:

The ramp-up of the mass production for the sales batch Batch #1 has included four independent manufacturing runs on separate production days. All the units prepared for the Day1 event were from the first two mass manufacturing runs, difference being the colour The Orange and Kaamos Black.

Thus those affected, if you wish, kindly drop a comment below whether you got your device from the Jolla Phone Day1 event in Helsinki, or it was mailed to you between July 9 - 29, and in which colour you got your Jolla Phone. Sharing the information will help us (and other customers) to faster iterate and potentially isolate the issue to a particular production day.

Once we have analysed the issue and root cause, we will come back with the corrective solution and process for the affected customers. Meanwhile, we DO NOT recommend DIY fix the unit and rather kindly wait for the solution which we will provide.

Jolla Phone has a 2-year warranty for hardware defects.
