Ahoy,

Time for an update in regards the unfortunate front camera dust issue!

As noted in the recent Community News letter we have been able to verify a solution to the dust issue and it seems to be now under control in the manufacturing process so we can continue ramp-up the volume.

The front camera module is sealed with a rubber sealing to the front glass, and the sealing needs to sit properly in its place and slightly ā€œsqueezeā€ precisely to make it tight with the front glass. In the affected units, this very sealing either has been completely missing or it has been installed improperly, due to a manufacturing assembly error, which can be concluded the root cause for this unfortunate issue.

To fix the issue we have changed the assembly order of the rubber sealing and added a testing step in the manufacturing process to ensure the rubber sealing is not missing and that it sits properly in its place.

Due to the mechanical structure of the front camera area, and that the proper placing of the seal requires special precision assembly, the fix IS NOT feasible for DIY and we DO NOT recommend experimenting with it. This also means that we will replace the complete unit in question.

Please note the Jolla Phone as a complete unit is currently tested only for IP44 ingress protection and the front camera housing itself is not air-tight by design (for those interested, please see IEC official IP ratings). Also, there may be residual micro-particles from the manufacturing line which can be visible with a magnifying glass or in a close-up macro picture of the front camera lens. This is normal within the accepted tolerances and does not make the camera (and pictures taken with it) yet defective. Further, blowing pressurized air thru the speaker and microphone holes will lead to excessive moisture entering the front camera area and can make fog appear on the lens - this is normal as the product is not water-tight and not rated for IP6*.

To verify the applied changes are effective our CTO defined a specific Flour Dust Test in which an excessive amount of very fine grade common wheat flour is exposed (literally baked ) to the unit. The test on purpose exceeds heavily the normal usage and IP4* test conditions. Please see below a comparison of two units after the same flour dust test:

  • unit with the seal improperly in place
  • unit where the seal is properly seated in its place

The process forward

We will be contacting the affected customers and will provide a replacement unit. We apologize any inconvenience this causes for the affected customers and assume full responsibility to replace affected units with a new unit.

Jolla Phone has a 2-year warranty for hardware defects. Further, should you remain uneasy about the situation or the provided solution, we have 30-day Return & Refund Policy from the day you have received your phone. No questions asked and always welcome back :heart_hands:

Hope these clarify and thank you for understanding that we are doing the utmost best we can to resolve the issue and with minimal impact to the overall shipping progress.

Sincerely,

Jolla

Thank you for the investigation and clarfying the case. While it is great that you found the cause of the problem, it is unfortunate that we cannot fix the issue on our own:

Let’s keep fingers crossed that as little units as possible are affected.
And the process forward as suggested really further increases the confidence.

Dear @Jolla team,

did I get it right that the dust problem is an accepted hardware defect, so that we will be able to claim he warranty later if the problem will appear on up to now unaffected devices?

Does hat mean, you will contact us on your own by knowing the affected devices by serial numbers?

I guess the message is clear and reassuring:

It would be a bit difficult to fix it yourself, but technically, if you got a suitable seal, you could probably handle it on your own. But Jolla is going to send you a completely new phone anyway, so what’s the point? You’d just be voiding your warrant

yeah

I have one more question. You say that, according to the stated IP rating, the phone is resistant to water splashes, but in one of your statements you also mentioned that, by design, the front camera housing is not airtight.

So, on a rainy day, would water getting around the earpiece area cause any serious problems? Or what about cleaning the phone with a damp cloth? These are the kinds of things that could potentially cause issues for users over time.

Of course, based on the IP rating you provided, the phone should be able to withstand situations like these, but I still wanted to ask just to be sure =)

See IP 4 4

Not air tight. etc.
Splash protected-> rain tight.
Should be clear after reading wiki article.

Thanks for the reasonable countermeasure!

Is the ā€œspecial precision assemblyā€ some big machine, that is part of the assembly line in Salo, or can something smaller and more mobile assembly be used for it? If it is small enough, could Jolla take it with them to events, where Jolla has presense, and they could identify and fix phones for users who visit the event?

I think Jolla already knows which phones are affected based on the serie number which gets registered as soon they send the phone to the customer . They know who has which phone.

I would love to be able to keep the defective phone and request another one, of course paying a reasonable sum difference if possible?
For me the front facing camera is the least of interest to me

While you may think you don’t need the front camera now, you never know when you need to use it. Eg. to prove your identity when trying to set up a new bank account.

Well, to be fair Sweden already have a system to prove our identity without having to scan our faces.

Considering i don’t have the rubber seal at all let me add myself to the list

EDIT: i’m starting to see some dust in the main camera…

What about units that are not yet (as far as I can see) experiencing the dust problem but logically should be?

Can I ask for a replacement down the line within the 2 years?

Thanks Jolla for the commitment and reassurance in fixing this :folded_hands:

Exactly, as i don’t see dust in mine, but i don’t have (or at least i don’t see it) the rubber band at all, so i’m concerned for the future…

WWhere can I find the rubber seal? Where can I see it? Thanks.

I just hope that if they send me a new phone they also semd me a new protective screen. Or should I order one in advance just in case? And I also hope they don’t send the new phones out with the defective i3c board still.
