Improving Notes

This thread ist related to the Crowdfunding features or apps topic. Please take a look there for further informations and background.

This special thread is dedicated to the Notes app.

Features and Improvements:

  • Add support for Nextcloud and WebDAV sync
  • Add support for IMAP sync (similar to Apple Notes)
  • Markdown support
  • Search into each note, up to the searched word (not only show the note(s) containing the searched word)

Notes is already open source now (if I remember correctly) and Nextcloud sync probably already in works.

On the other hand a sync via IMAP could make sense like Apple does it in their own ecosystem - and we can in the end already use a similar feature with a specific note folder in an eMail account. But having access to such notes via the notes app makes more sense.

Which version should be supported? Shouldn’t markdown support not be enabled on Document?

Any version, I would be happy with the most basic Markdown support.

Your second sentence I do not understand.

Note is to write any document. Text or Markdown.
The Document app is to view any document. PDF, PPTX, ODT, markdown, etc.
I thought it could be better as it follows the KISS rule

Nice initiative, but why not straight to GitHub · Where software is built

Unless maybe this :thread: can be a filtering round, and then we have a “idea → GH issue” mapping in opener message.

Neither the Document app nor the Notes app support Markdown.

It would be nice for both to support it.

(There’s a million different Markdown versions but they all share the same basic set, and that would be enough imo)

I disagree with this distinction. Yes, the Document app is a viewer only but the Notes app is both for writing & viewing.

Because this is a user forum, no developer tool. You would need another account then on github, and thst may prevent non-dev user to post.

I prefer org-mode to markdown and would like a nextcloud integration to sync the notes between devices and apps.

SailfishOS Notes ↔ nextcloud ↔ PC Emacs

Sure, just unclear who’s up for maintaining the inevitable GH sync work, otherwise probably nothing will happen?

Already available

Did I misread the link?
It looks like the nextcloud part is coming or will be easy to set up with the file backend but the org-mode syntax I’m not sure if it’s on the radar yet.

Too niche in my opinion, but perhaps should I take a look as I never used it

It’s quite widely supported - GitHub and GitLab readmes for example

Speaking of syncing, I’d love if Notes could be synced via general CalCAV/CardDAV protocol.

Or do we already have an app for that, too?

If someone is developing the nextcloud backend can it be made easy to set up??Ie. use your nextcloud account on your device (automatically), select something in the settings and have it sync to the nextcloud notes app

As far as I understood it this is exactly why that settings are open source now.

CalDAV is a protocol for calendars and tasks, CardDAV the protocol for contacts. So the answer to your wish must be no to my mind.

Or did you mean general WebDAV instead?

No, plenty of Cal/CardDAV applications explicitely allow usage for notes, both server- and client-side.
