Crowdfunding features or apps

This topic is related to improve all the small things people may expect from a modern smartphone, especially to enrich SFOS with standard features that the big two already offer. Some of those things may be possible with patch manager. But all in all SFOS should be able to compete with other systems when it comes to standard usage, and this should work out-of-the-box. (I know, I mentioned this before in other threads…). We will get a nice phone with the J2 - now we need nice software that covers the standard use cases. And I would be willing to contribute a little bit to get this done, especially as I can’t program that myself.

This is the main entry - we will create and link the threads related to specific apps and/or features below.

I agree, but it’s difficult to manage the feature. If there are some devs with free time, why not. But the all dev in their free-time :frowning:

They still can accept a work on a feature/bug/… for a certain amount.

There are some teachers here, I think it’s @orangecat. Maybe funding some students who ended their bachelor or master. Student have usually a lot of free time in the summer

I know that @dcaliste develops a lot of feature, but no idea if he would accept a funding for a special features. Developing something you want isn’t the same than something other users want. What we can do, is define together how to chose a feature

3 posts were split to a new topic: Improving calendar

I would definitely participate to this kind crowfunding!

Another thing to crowdfund could be support for developer meetups or hackathons. For some developers, getting subsidized meals or tickets may be worth more than paid work on apps. Such events can be very productive and also very rewarding, compared to toiling on your own.

@pherjung Can we add the topics/apps like a table of content with links in the top post too? I guess we will find more thing very quick, in the I already also mentioned mail and contacts in my initial post.

But I’m not sure how this works as a wiki, still looks the same on mobile…

Edit: got it…

I edited the top post to include a link to my suggestion about hackathons.

I’ll be glad to see if I can help if you need anything from a university perspective (internship, student projects, proposing a topic to our students, or research-oriented in our lab. I’m a professor in a university in Paris).

Though, my experience with student projects around SFOS (which I did for a few years, and we developed a few apps through that) is mixed:

  • Documentation for SFOS was (is?) not straightforward for students. Those who managed better were those who had previous classes with the Qt library. Basic tutorials, clear tips and tricks, easy to replicate examples, clear Silica components docs, etc. were missing.
  • Tooling and the SDK is hazardous, prone to many errors, and not always reliably working. We wasted too much time to make the SDK, IDE and the emulator work, that in many cases, little time was left for the actual dev and students were quite frustrated with the experience.
