I have wanted to use my phone as my only device for a long time. I just need to be able to connect a keyboard, mouse and display to it, and browser should work. That would cover most of my work needs.
How much of a project would it be to enable mouse and keyboard support on Sailfish? How about an external display? Is some type of external device a must? Could Miracast work for the display?
Any insights? If this is at all possible within reason, I might take the project up myself. Might even try to build hardware, if it comes to that.
I donât even own a Sailfish device yet, but I plan to buy the new one with more RAM and use my old phone as an authenticator only.
What is the issue with the monitor? Does Jolla C2 for example support WiFi-Direct? I found Miraclecast, which is a Miracast implementation for Linux, might work?
Can you use mouse and keyboard at the same time via Bluetooth?
If you want to work on a project that will make many people love you, you could make Sailfish OS actually work on âofficially supportedâ devices such as Xperia 10 IV and Xperia 10 V, which are basically unusable at the moment.
This might be a good idea in the sense that I would at least get familiar with inner workings of Sailfish. Could be way beyond my skill level though, and I do not have those devices. However, if they are currently unusable I might get one quite cheaply I guess.
EDIT: the long term goal remains to have a small device that I can customize freely and it supports keyboard, mouse and display.
The mouse is working since 5.0.0.43 or some minor versions before. With Bluetooth my Logitech MX Master 3 didnât work but an very old Logitech mouse works. So it depends. Cable connected mouses and keyboards works as well (with an USB Hub powered by the Phone in between). The Landscape mode is currently 5.0.0.77 not usable wit an mouse independent if its connected with an cable or Bluetooth. See [C2] Mouse Axis are interchanged in Landscape-Mode
The Xperia 10 III supports an external monitor with Android. Itâs not scaled but an copy of the screen is displayed. With 5.0.0.77 currently both of my phones reboots ~10 seconds after the cable is connected to the docking station. See 10III crashes with beep when plugged into docking station
Your post is offensive and arrogant again. If phone is unusable for you but usable for someone else that doesnât mean that that person is âjolla cultistâ.
In general no complain is ignored if expressed respectfuly and not repeated over and over. Are yours like that?
Did you ever get a clear response on how the new Jolla Phone will handle external monitor? I only see unclear answers in here. This might be a dealbreaker for me, since I was told it would support external monitor like the Volla Phone. I was even going to preorder the big version because of this, since I am in the same usecase as you. I also have a samsung phone and are able to use the Dex as a laptop computer substitute, also at work. Which is pretty useful. I was excited about getting a linux phone to do so, but if this isnât the case, maybe I would have to order a Volla phone instead?
You are right, there is no clear statement from Jolla concerning convergence, with the DEX-like use of a SFOS phone announced or promised by Jolla. The statement absence here clearly means you cannot rely on this feature to come soon.
I also used sometimes DEX in the past as Laptop substitute in the office, very convient, and sadly not on the SFOS horizonâŚ
Sad⌠I am very dissapointed, thought this would be a standard feature on a linux phone, but I gues not. I will have to revise my decision on my next phone then. Thank you for the answer though, I really appreciate it.
What we have discussed here in the forum, this has seemed like feature not so many require but those who does it would be critical. Hopefully software support comes, that way it would be possible for some ports
I hope too, ofc I seek an alternative smart phone as well. But If I end up with a Linux phone, why the hell wouldnât I use it as a laptop/desktop pc as well? Then itâs no longer âjust" a phone, but usable for even more needs. This is what we all dreamed about when we were first introduced to a smartphone back in the 00âs right?
