Community meeting on 25th September 2025

Please note new time slot

Schedule: Thursday 2025-09-25T16:00:00Z :world_map: :date:

Sailfish OS Community Calendar (ICS format)

We agreed 5th June to try an afternoon time slot. Hopefully this works better for community members from central Europe. Let’s adjust time slot as needed.

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • Add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • Indicate how much time you’ll need so we can time-box the meeting accordingly.
  • Please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic.
  • If you can’t make the meeting please ask and name a substitute.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: always ask for more time than you anticipate your topic needs!

Please have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting so we can prepare good answers. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

Template for topic proposal: (post your topic proposals as comments to this forum topic).

  • Is the J3 a new direction for Jolla; moving to selling factory-flashed and bootloader locked devices?
It has been suggested by Xiaomi that they’re ending their bootloader unlocking function to maintain compliance with EU regs in the digital safety act. Does Jolla consider this a threat to their existing business model, such that they are moving away from selling device licences to pre-flashed devices? I ask as Sony continues to release new versions of the 10 series, and they remain well built and and affordable mid-range handsets:

  • Will try to be there.

Topic: Speed up a Device

Some details about the topic:

There is that thread in the forum for some time now, and I wonder if anyone from Jolla ever looked a this. I also feel the handling of SFOS is sometimes slow and would like to see some things happening faster. And as these things seem to be tied into the system and force a device to (re-) act slow I ask myself why…

I will sadly be on work travel that day so I don’t know if could make it into the meeting (nevertheless I will try) , but I missed to point to this topic already three or four times. On the other hand everything relevant is already said in the linked thread, so the main questions are:

  • Is Jolla aware of this topic?
  • Is there anything that stands against bringing such speed up tweaks into the system with a SFOS update for all users?

Approx. time needed: 5 min

Substitute (optional): maybe @Seven.of.nine

Copy from last week as I submitted this too late:

  • Some details about the topic:There has been multiple reports that cell broadcast alerts aren’t working: Cell Broadcast alerts (Germany) - #165 by davidrasch. Is this known problem and if so is there any idea how to mitigate this problem?
  • Approx. time needed:5min
  • Substitute (optional):I can’t guarantee I’m able to join, but would bet answer mentioned in logs interest quite few.

Does the Sony 10 V II comply with the EU rules about repairability and sustainability?

Dunno. Never gave it a moments thought. Should I?

From my perspective, as a beggar (which. is. what. we. are), I look at the 10 series phones and see a well made handset of which I have owned several over many years.

Never once have I been disappointed. Never once have I said; “bugger, this is proper landfill-android trash!” They all still work. They all still run SFOS (or android). X. XA2 Plus. 10ii. 10iii. 10vi.

From which perspective should I care about EU rules about repairability and sustainability…?

Member States have to transpose it into national rules and apply it from 31 July 2026.

So I guess it will only affect hardware that is built after that date. The Sony 10VII was released on September 19, 2025.

  • Topic:Timeline of GPS development
  • Some details about the topic:@hildon has asked clarification on GPS development on C2. My guess is that this is regarding A-GPS implementation which has been talked by @Rainemak in Open source discussion. I guess the main interest is to ask if the A-GPS will be implemented already in next release?

Links to discussions:

  • Approx. time needed:5min
  • Substitute (optional):I can’t guarantee I’m able to join, but would bet answer mentioned in logs probably interest quite few. I am very sorry to raise so many questions without guarantee that I can be there… Renovating home, which takes surprise surprise quite a lot of time…

Minutes: #sailfishos-meeting: Sailfish OS, open source, collaboration -- 25th September 2025

Log: #sailfishos-meeting log

Today we had a superb discussion. I want to see discussion happening, at the same time 5 mins is nothing. For the next meeting onwards I’ll suggest that minimum topic time would be 10 minutes. I’m open to extend the meeting by 30mins if that is needed.

16:05:27 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> Good question but difficult to give you a good answer. We have not
16:05:29 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> said that we are moving away from downloadable & flashable
16:05:31 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> Sailfish OS images. At this point, we do not have an update
16:05:33 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> regarding the next downloadable & flashable Sailfish OS image.
16:06:06 <rainemak> Based on forum comments it looks that Fairphone could plausible be a good candidate for the future. No decisions

thank you for the response. my apologies, i had a late call scheduled.

+1 from me for a 10vi / 10vii port if that is still a direction Jolla wishes to pursue.

Sorry that I wasn’t able to participate in discussion, but thank you for the great answers and vivid discussion! It was pleasant reading

Working on Support for 10VI/10VII will be -1 for me. We are waiting for support for 10IV/V over an year and probably it will be not happen. Do you want wait about three years for the support? After that time you device will be deprecated in all shops like 10IV/V now. Other Sony’s devices have bugs too. SFOS is a nice operating system but not for sony. We have a lot of porters like piggz - his ports for VollaPhone are perfectly. Jolla should say: 10IV/10V can be forgotten and we will support official only one model in the future and/or give more support for porters

we finally have a genuinely good sony midrange handset in the 10vii (lots of valuable upgrades), it would be a shame to abandon just-announced and widely-available hardware if the software stack/support is still up to the quality Jolla need for SFOS adaption.

i share the concern that Jolla have bitten off more than they can chew with both the 10iv and v as well as the C2, and merely point out that basing commercial sales on handsets that have disappeared from the market is not a great a strategy.

Is the Volla Phone X23 fully working?

It is an quite expensive phone in Norway… But far newer then my Sony 10 I…

ask piggz or search for a volla thread.

x23 is a community port, not really a topic then for comm meeting

took me a minute:
