BeaconDB problems with MicroG Services

Hi there all

I have 2 licences and two, exactly the same XA2 Devices. One is brand new, second used in good condition.

Those two devices were bought few weeks ago, as my previous devices reached the end.

I ask Jolla if they could move licences and they agreed.

New device was first to arrive. During the licence transfer to new imei I was on pure sailfish withouth app support. I have had many problems with GPS Service on XA2 devices previously. I recently came across BeaconDB. I installed it on this new device and to my amazement gps got first fix indoors within a minute! I was very glad that gps problems are no more. To the point I’ve got the licence transfered. I installed app support and after this gps was still fine. After installing microg services however through fdroid my gps expirience instantly deteriorated. Now the device sees few less satelites and less of them are a good signal.

I know it may seem like a fiction to some but I have something to prove it. Second, used device.

After it’s arrival I installed BeaconDB positioning services. I placed device in fixed position near the windows. I got gps fix in less than 30 seconds.
I installed app support and right after microg services. It took 20-30 minutes. So i placed the device in exactly same spot as before and tried to get gpx fix. There where fewer satelites with less signal strenght. It took almost 5 minutes to get a fix.
I disabled all positioning services in microg but no change.

I almost don’t believe it myself but facts are facts.

Can someone elaborate?

From my point I can add that newer xperia 10 V has good gps out of the box. I installed BeaconDB services after already having microg installed and the gps behavior didn’t change a bit.

EDIT
I should mention that I installed only 3 recomended microg packages from microg repository added to fdroid

From what it’s worth i have microg and beacondb installed on my xa2, it definitely helped me, in the sense that now gps is connecting all the times while before he had lots of troubles, but still, it’s a very long process and gps can take also 15 minutes to connect

One thing i observed is that from when i installed beacondb, despite the long time to get fix, it’s connecting to more satellites and with a better strenght, or at least that’s my impression

Just my two cents on the matter, i hope situation will get better when beacondb will officially be released by jolla

Maybe Ill put it in much simplier way.
The BeaconDB is helping a lot no matter what config (Microg or no microg) compared to stock gps on XA2. But why does it work much better without microg installed? How this could be even relevant?

So does it become better when you remove (“uninstall”) MicroG?

If not, does it become better when you remove (“uninstall”) AlienDalvik aka AAS?

Just perform your configuration steps in reverse to determine if the “quick GPS fix” state is ever reached again.

Currently you are just stating: “I have the impression that GPS deteriorates somewhere along this installation process.” That GPS on XA2 was always problematic, for many under SailfishOS as well as for some under Android, is well known, still nobody has ever been able to determine certain software-component causing it (only that BeaconDB helps many to varying extent): You might be on right track to finally resolve this.

I may be. I may not. I didn’t do my steps in reverse but I simply reinstalled all packages on both devices. Funny part is, one is achieving quick fix after this (The used one) but the new unit stayed as it was. Sees many satelites but it is not eager to get a fix.

It seems like we back to the beginning, that is, gps on XA2 is crappy

Please report also the signal strength of the many satellites you receive.

All I can say of right now is that te used device sees less satelites than new one, but connects much much faster. The signal strenght is similar if I put devices “sticking” to themselves in one place.

New device sees 40-45 satelites and it takes long to get a fix
Old device sees 34-38 satelites and getting a fix almost instantly

How much ‘percent’ signal strength do you read on the 3rd page right in GPSInfo?
