Jolla mentioned that it may be possible to offer support for NFC in Android AppSupport similar to how Bluetooth support was added. However, they were unsure of use cases beyond payment services, so development would probably not be prioritised.
Have you come across an Android app where NFC is required or where it would be useful? Add it to this thread! That way, we can create an overview of what would be useful.
LibreLink (an app for diabetics, where NFC is used to read out sensors)
Jolla (Seafarix) can implement their custom AIDL (piece of Android) similarly to custom one they made for BT support. Reading tags/smartcards is very common. Also contact card sharing between phones.
Hungarian users could use the Simplepay app to pay using nfc with the digitalized version of the credit card.
It works nicely on LineageOS with microg.
I canāt use my bank android app (security restrictions ) but i can use the website (sbanken.no). The problem is that bankid (android app) donāt work. I have to authenticate my passport with NFC. And thatās a no go. Conclusion, i have to also use both my old Samsung and my new bellowed JOLLA PHONE (2026) to login my bank. Ok, I can live with that because i think that this will be solved in the future. Heia JOLA BOYS.
I donāt know if the same procedure works in Norway, but for Swedish banks you can use the older device to activate BankID on the new SailfishOS device using Bluetooth - instead of scanning your passport/ID with NFC.
Try logging in on the bankās app (not website) with your Android device, and see if you can find an option there to create a new BankID for another device. That procedure worked for me (in Sweden) to use the Bluetooth connection between the phones to authorise myself using BankID on the older device.
(But yes, I would prefer to not having to use an Android device at all. This is definitely a use case for NFC in AppSupport.)
@maighstir Yes. I have read all the tips in the forum but no luck. My banking app sbanken (and older versions) now owned by DNB donāt have that possibility. Maybe if I had an account in DNB it could be possible but i donāt change my bank yet. sbanken is good for me not DNB. Google DNB and sbanken and you will understand why. Sorry if i am off topic. We should have this thread clean.
Just open Aurora Store and type āNFCā in the search box. You will find many apps that are effectively not usable on Sailfish OS AppSupport because the required Android NFC integration is missing.
Thatās the type of app that can and should be made native. Jolla does have a point that many nfc apps are more like toys. But i think we already have several that provide value.
