The Volla 22 (Gigaset GS5) Thread

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried to flash Volla OS first like @poetaster suggested or have you tried to flash SF directly?

Directly, I am not interested in Volla bootmanager, recovery. My other Rephone works just fine. But thank you. I can not confirm that flashing will work, no matter which image is on the Rephone. Any idea how to power it on again?

Unfortunately I can’t help on this front. I hope somebody else can give you some hints.

Thanks to Rephone, I will try this tonight after work. …

And in English…

Good morning

  1. Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds to turn off the device (or remove the battery directly).
  2. Press the volume down button and the power button at the same time.
  3. Release the power button until the startup animation logo appears.
  4. On the screen, the Chinese words for factory mode will be displayed.
  5. Use the volume button to follow up down to the last menu and press the power button to confirm.
  6. The device will restart in a few seconds.

Friendly Griie

NormCap is the sh*t!

Sometimes it is better to wait with translating things, until it is clear, that the procedure was successful. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I disagree. It’s not like I told anyone to follow the steps, and I don’t believe in censorship.

Thanks for translating. I agree it could be helpful for others, so let everyone know about it. It’s an official answer from Rephone.

But in my case it doesn’t work. The only thing that is working is the light bulb for charging if I plug in usb cable.

Do you think there will be an official Sailfish port/license on the Volla 22 in the future? I am no ‘tinkerer’, so I am not able to port it now.
My XA2 is very slow and the battery runs out during the day while I use that phone sparsely. Would it make sense buying a Volla 22 now and boot Sailfish later on it with the multi boot system of Volla?

What about Rephone? It has more RAM, a better camera and better repairability then the Volla 22. Will it ever be possible to buy such a phone with Sailfish?

If you can get somewhere a rephone with Android 11, there is not too much tinkering necessary, to have a running SF System. The problem is that most of them are now on Android 12 and this seems to make massive problems. Look at @Pingutux last post. And as far as I remember he wasn’t the only one.

FYI the GS5 Pro I bought from this site did come with Android 11, however I don’t know if this necessarily means all of their stock would be the same.

Thanks all for the useful tips and guides in this thread. Able to install SFOS directly after unlocking bootloader, so far it’s only the known issues e.g. wi-fi on meaning higher battery drain. Boot-up screen is not ideal also as it shows the terminal output over the Gigaset logo but obviously a small concern and was not going to be perfect given unlocked bootloader.

What country are you in? In Germany, there are a number of ebay sellers with Android 11 rephones. Most are customer returns. ebay.de/str/nesatec for instance. I’ve found around 20 pieces so far.

You all have kind answers. But think of your mum or your aunt. My problem is that I’m not able to port. I use Sailfish for about 10 years because I like it. As a non-tech I face sometimes problems that are easy for most of the community members but not for me.
Hopefully Sailfish will come with a licensed official port to the GS5/Volla 22 or the Rephone.
much better: if Jollyboys contacted Gigaset for a special Sailfish phone.
I am Dutch.

Well, I am about to sell my working Rephone. I would like to have 200€. Please PN if interested. Shipping in Germany only.

My mom rarely turns her cellphone on  My aunt can be reached on Fridays. Seriously, you can still find new (often returns) xperia 10iii on the market (I just found 3 for 200 euros on ebay) so you could get a device with support.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, I don’t fancy a Sony anymore. I was one of the unlucky ones with a 10 III that had an echo while calling after Sailfish was installed. I want to sell it, together with a Suncase. It works well, it is in mint condition, apart from that echo.
Since Sony produces devices with a narrow ratio, I will not buy another Sony.
The ratio of Gigaset phones is better.
So my question stands: if I buy a Volla phone now, will it be possible to get Sailfish on it through multi boot lateron or do I have to buy a new Vollaphone when Sailfish is ready for it?

I live in the capital of NL and I am looking for a GS5 with Sailfish that functions well.
I already have a few not functioning devices in the drawer.

I don’t know if SFOS is useable in multiboot but I seem having read that somewhere here. IIRC @Kea, VPN and perhaps GPS under Android were counting in your choice, or?
Make sure that this will be possible on the phone you will get.
(OT) About the XA2, mine (back to daily use) is not slow as you describe and still pleases me very well. Did you try to reflash yours?

I did try multiboot with a GX4 (volla x23) but did not manage to get it installed properly.

I’ve been switching between rephone/GS5 for most of this year and the GS5 is stable. Since it’s a volunteer port, and @piggz uses it himself (with a GX4 pro), you need to understand that it’s as complete as the developer is willing/able to make it. It’s usable as a pure SFOS device. It has some issues (minor), all of which are documented here. I think I’ll add them to a wiki page when I have a minute.

Your safest bet in terms of recent hardware / software and proximity to what the developer uses is to spend a bit more and buy a GX4 pro / Volla X23.
