Telekom (Germany) - only 2.5G

Since I first start the phone I see that one sim card only gets maximum 2.5G when connected.

I tried with different slots, multisim, single sim, I’ve also moved this card back to an old LineageOS phone.

It’s always 2.5 with below 1mbit/s on speed test and 4G on that old Android phone.

What’s even more annoying, the second sim card I have (Orange Poland), while in roaming, still connects to the same Telekom network as the main card, and there I see Telekom 4G…

Anyone has some ideas how to tackle this?

Honestly, I have this phone since yesterday and there’s not much that actually works. Troubles all over. I really try to have low expectations here since I knew what I’m buying, but not even getting LTE is a deal breaker.

I also have Telekom DE, runs without any problems. Settings are to use 5G, but I usually just get 4G cause of my region (but can confirm that 5G works to where available).

I think that you are not alone. A bug is open here : Can only get 2G or 2.5G on Fastweb SIM

Can you try to force in Settings : prefer 4G ?

I can use 4G and 5G with Telekom DE, but the signal strength on the Jolla Phone GEN2 is extremely weak. On my Android device I usually get around 95–100% signal, while SailfishOS on the Jolla Phone GEN2 only shows about 20–30%.

I think this might be the same issue you’re experiencing. When the signal is slightly weaker at your location, SailfishOS seems to perform a handover down to EDGE (2.5G), even though 4G/5G should still be available.

So it looks like a modem/firmware problem specific to SailfishOS or the Jolla Phone GEN2 rather than a Telekom network issue.

I tried “prefer” in all possible options.

Weak signal would make sense, unless I see that there are two sim cards, one from Orange (PL), one from Telekom (DE) and they both end up connecting to Telekom. Orange has 4G while Telekom 2.5

The signal bar is inaccurate. This is well known bug.

Vodafone Germany has 5G.

Thx, maybe I’ll move all my family from Magenta to Vodafone.

Jokes aside, I spent some more time today, including resetting entire phone to factory but no bueno.

Added a mention here too so it gets tracked by the “official” bug report.

i tried with Vodafone card and indeed I get 5G.Today i also replaced SIM card to exclude some weird edge case. Still 2.5G / EDGE with a brand new SIM.

Honestly, not sure whether it looks the same for the phone you have (I assume this discussion is related to the J2?) - but the issue looks a bit similar to something I was experiencing and it could be related to the modem config. There’s a longer thread here related to VoLTE on the Sony Xperia 10ii.
(But don’t just try stuff randomly since playing around in root files could make matters worse).

Weirdly it seems to be fixed now. I went to another city and once i was there I noticed Telekom got 4G. Now I’m back home and it stays like this.
