HARDWARE: Jolla Phone 2026
UI LANGUAGE: US EN
REGRESSION: no way to check
DESCRIPTION:
I have a Fairphone 4 that manages to get 4G signal with my Fastweb SIM in Italy (should be 5G but the carrier said something about the phone only being designed to get “fake” 5G or something, I don’t know too much about this stuff).
The same SIM can only get 2G or 2.5G signal on my Jolla Phone, I tried both Automatic and Manual network selection.
I also can’t get mobile internet connection.
PRECONDITIONS:
A Fastweb SIM card, a Jolla Phone 2026, default Cellular Network settings.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Be in Italy (not sure if actually needed?).
Insert SIM card in the phone, it can be turned on or off.
Wait for the phone to detect a Network automatically (takes quite some time for me).
See that the network is 2.5G.
Try changing network manually, you’ll only get “Connection to network failed” or a 2G network.
EXPECTED RESULT:
The phone connects to 5G network, or 4G at least. Mobile data works.
ACTUAL RESULT:
The phone connects to 2.5G network. Mobile data doesn’t work.
MODIFICATIONS:
Nothing from OpenRepos.
Added the gesture to quickly get back to the previous open app via long horizontal edge swipe.
Chum Installed.
Android AppSupport enabled, Aurora and F-Droid installed (problem happens whether AppSupport is active or not).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This is the only thing keeping me from daily driving my Jolla Phone.
Sometimes the network goes away completely and with cellular data active I’ll be prompted to select a SIM for the mobile network. I select my SIM and nothing changes.
Do let me know if anyone has any idea about tests I could run to find out the problem!
The access point is definitely wrong - it’s what gets filled in by default if your provider isn’t in the database, but it’s non-functional because it doesn’t point to a server.
Looking at the Fastweb website, the connection name should be ‘FW WEB’ and the access point name should be ‘apn.fastweb.it’. Have a look if that fixes it.
I know it sounds silly but having the same issue, just with Telekom DE, I replaced my SIM card with a new one, and then after few hours still being stuck with 2.5 which almost made me sell the phone (or send it back) I went to a nearby city and it magically switched to 4G/5G and stays like this since.
Damn sounds silly but seems to work!
I had to travel today and brought my jolla along to experiment, put the SIM in on the train and it worked!
First time I’m able to be on mobile data, thanks a lot!
It must be something in a direction of tower handshake caching or similar. I can imagine that during the first boot it failed to go higher and thst tower maybe remember that which got invalid ony after switching.
Pure speculation.
