Parental control

… since the Nokia N900, I’ve been using Maemo, Meego and Sailfish OS, and I’ve also grown a bit older
What I’m getting at is that our children also have smartphones, and I’m currently trying to control their smartphone by using Google Family Link. My question is whether it’s possible to extend the user function so that, for example, the usage time can be set in general or for individual apps, etc. Similar to what was discussed here in the forum five years ago ( Parental control in Sailfish? Alternative to MS Family Safety, Google Family Link, ). I’m not looking for a ‘server solution’ like Family Link, but it would be great to have settings options directly on the smartphone…

I’m not aware of something already existing in Sailfish. Perhaps has @ric9k tried something, but I’m not sure. One thing is sure, is that there are a MDM API: MDM Framework - Sailfish OS
But you’ll need to develop an application

On Sailfish X (with open boot loader) they can easily reflash that thing

pardon, I wasn’t precise enough: the smartphones are currently using Android, but I would like to switch to Sailfish OS for the children…

Do they really need parental control, if they are able to reflash the firmware? xD

As soon as they can read it’s probably over with parental controls

I think with little work the MDM-feature should also work as a parental control. But for tge moment its more ment for business and different working profiles!

This is something I already said in another thread. If Jolla wants to compete with the big ones there need to be some standard features to be added to SailfishOS. Parental control is one of that, also find my device. The first dies not need to have online requirements, it’s just like setting a pin/password to that part in system settings. The second needs a running background service, with a user chosen service (for example Nextcloud Phonetrack).

It’s definitely a cool feature to have, still, they could e.g. start with a browser that is not banned from half the sites on the internet before putting resources into gimmicks like that.

Oh, surely there are lot of other things to be done. But I still miss some kind of Roadmap or priority list.

You could probably run some sort of proxy server like squid on the phone, would that work?

Want would be features you need? Is there any open source solution for (desktop) linux you like?

Well… Very basic.
The first phone was a N900.
Then, SFOS, where I removed the browser access and didn’t install AAS.
The idea was to have a phone for SMS, Calls, pic/vid, and voilà.

But quickly, the norm came back and I dived into Goolple parent(al) control hell…

But most of all, I believe the most fruitful thing is: talk, explain, explain, talk, and again.
They will anyway see porn and everything at school. You can’t fight. Many partents don’t care/understand/know. It’s open bar.
So… Australia?

Well, there’s no question that we should supervise our children when they use smartphones/laptops etc. But I don’t think we need to sit next to them 100% of the time while they’re playing a game, for example. I would like to be able to set a general usage time and time for individual apps (native Sailfish OS apps as well as Android apps), as is the case with Family Link. In addition, apps should also be usable ‘permanently’, such as making phone calls. I believe that Linux (Debian) already has a corresponding parental control feature…

Parental control is a serious request that needs serious answers. We all know that smartphones are addictive, that children often are glued to screens, no matter what’s on it. Extended screentime prevents them from other activities that help their development. In several countries groups of parents agree together to give their children a smartphone when they are older. Parental control e.g. of screentime also is a solution. Talking about what they watch is always recommended.

So Google Almighty gives free space to influencers on Youtube who try to catch children in their net, letting them buy things, offering them a following video, then another one etc. and at the same time Google offers Family Link.

Win-win, except for the people using G

Totally agree, the ‘influencer net’ is a real worry. Until we get something native in SFOS, I’ve been looking into DNS-level filtering (like NextDNS or Pi-hole) to handle some of this. It’s not a full parental control suite, but it at least cuts out some of the tracking and junk without needing a Google account to manage it.

What I also found was ‘Kids mode’:

but unfortunately it is no longer being developed. Maybe this could be something to develop further or maybe Jolla will also publish the code for ‘user mode’?

What do you mean with this?

… that this part of changing the “user” in Sailfish OS may be published to open-source, so that the community could give some input for development …
