I did mention it in a little list. At the moment my sim is in a Volla 22 that I bought cheap from someone. Threema Libre works fine on it. Although cameras aren’t great, I can make video calls with family abroad. Very important to me. This phone just has the right size. It’s not thick and the weight is acceptable. The battery lasts quite long. Replacing it is easy. Parts are fixed with screws, not with glue. I think the size is quite similar to Fairphone 6. The latter is more modular. If I were Jolla I should talk to the community people who ported to these two devices Gigaset and Fairphone and ask what problems they had. ‘VollaOS’ doesn’t convince me, it’s boring, but it works. A serious option could also be the modular HMD Fusion. The design team is Finnish, so it should not be too difficult to collaborate.
Until now I prefered a device with a 3,5 jack. But these seem to need quite some space in a phone. Now there are adapters so you can keep using wired in-ears. That’s why I didn’t choose for top priority, yet if the new phone will have that jack it will be fine.
May be a bit off top but while Jolla is gathering information from us about what kind of future we would like still didn’t provide nothing new for the 10 V. Last info was about Jolla going on hollyday and that they will roll out something stable for 10 V and clearly they are back but instead of keeping the word they are planning new phone after failure of C2. It is not looking good and how is it looking is Jolla looking to make more money from us than they can get from licences…
Forgive me for beeing sceptical but after C2 my money isn’t going for Jolla Next gen phone.
I’m also fine with the 22 (although I use the rephone more often and it’s a bit thicker).
Ah, I wasn’t aware of HMD. They make phones at a nice price point with the same fixable and battery foo. IP54 is just ‘splash resistant’, but not bad. For the price point, not bad. The Skyline also looks nice: HMD Skyline Smartphone (8GB RAM / 256GB Memory, 4600 mAh Battery, 6.55 pOLED Display, 50MP Selfie blah, blah. HMD Skyline Screen Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide
I think I bought my first Jolla via DNA in Finland. If 5G Jolla will be available there, I could try it again. But not sure if operators will sell it? Anyways, I am hoping it will be made for sale.
it’s not insertion, it’s bending. the lever function applied against the connector via the cable being pushed around in a pocket.
it’s not just eSIM
as long as a lot of basic features do not work with SFOS, new hardware won’t help
I have an XA2 and a Xperia 10ii. WHike they are slow, the work quite well.
So, I decided to buy a used C2 and put my Graphene Os Pixel 8 pro in the drawer for a while.
I was hoping to get a more smooth experience because of newer hardware, but I must admit that i am not super impressed. The bluetooth issue is a BiG issue, as i have a Tesla, but not unsolvable.
I cannot get the magic keyboard to work and I am not ale to connect my car to hotspot.
The lag on the phone when using android apps is the most annoying part.
That being said, I find myself really liking using the phone. The native apps are great, battery life if amazing, I can still connect to my car via native bluetooth and whisperfish delivers audio.
While I support a stronger hardware platform, I would also love to see these issues fixed before shifting focus to new devices.
I took a look at the Fairphone 6 because someone mentioned it. I agree, that looks loks a solid device at a good price!
I also do see the value in a Jolla branded device. But adding support for Fairphone 6 would be an easy and attractive choice.
What is stopping the use of the Pixel phones for sailfish?
That’s why I asked. A reduced set of wisely chosen hardware might help.
To me, the next Jolla Phone is an electronic everyday carry item, a tool inspired by Occam’s razor.
Guys, please dont go to the 1950s Tv Set shape
or to the shape of a Modern soap box like you did with the Jolla C2, just because Apple thinks its cool…
Stay with the design of the original Nokia N9.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra utilized the same perfect design.
And Sony did even better than Samsung integrating 2 front facing speakers with Sony Xperia X Compact and Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact!
I “agree” that the Xperias’ width is good but I wouldn’t call it small. But the width also isn’t even close to some of the other phones that are out there on the market.
Going back to what I initially wrote; it’s not only that one handed usage with these “long” phones can be like going up-and-down a guitar’s fretboard.
For me a phone with officially supported Sailfish could also be short(er). In general the phone could just be smaller.
It would just be swell if there could be more phone models available with officially supported Sailfish and not just the one or two at any given time (which also always seem to lean on the bigger size).
To your suggestion: I guess(?)
But some additional questions from me: is Jolla going to implement such functionality directly into the OS so it would be available out-of-the-box? Or would I need to be downloading it from whatever-not-so-official-place?
Mostly what I’m after here is that the UI and how it is used is good as it is and that a phone the UI happens to be on could just be smaller.
Got me thinking along the same lines when I opened this topic for the first time and started going through that “what’s going on”.
I mean it really is great that there might be a possibility for a new officially supported phone, and I’m celebrating that as much as the next forum user. But there are users me including that have acquired a phone on vague (or not even that vague?) “promises” that these phones will be officially supported. I’ve had my phone waiting just for that already for one year and two months and I assume many have been waiting for much much longer.
I’d be frothing at the mouth for an officially supported phone since The First One but it is rather difficult to convince oneself to invest into one if already the previously acquired one will be good only as a paperweight.
Rounded side edges make the phone feel slippery. Kind of an issue with xz2c.
The iphone square edges feel more secure holding it.
I have Nokia N8, Nokia N9, Xperia X, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XA2, Xperia 10 III.
I had Xperia XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ 3.
Neither of them ever slipped off my hand.
Am i too realistic ?
They will rebrand something, they will not be able to design something
My 5 cents
Its mostly about the way the bottom right (i am right handed) “digs” into your palm as you hold the phone (xz2c). It kind of slips.
Its been ages since i handled an N9 but i don’t remember it having that problem. it was smaller though and that contributed to a better grip. And probably material choices and the rounded side and not bottom played a role to it.
Anyway its stuff that need to be looked at during the industrial design phase of the design.
Use your pinkie
Here’s the design for them.
5" to 6" FHD+ display, two front facing speakers selfie cam and RGB LED.
Easy to hold, easy to swipe and easy to pocket.
After all, they are from Finland, let’s not write them off prematurely😁
what is that? 20chars
Mainline linux support by design would be nice.
