Compared to apple and samsung sales yes. To something for the size of Jolla. probably not. Ie if it bring in 10K more sales its wont be a bad idea.
No; compared to the guy trying to gauge interest for crowdfunding thingy.
And don’t get me wrong; i want it to be holdable too - just not the smallest phone in the whole world (which it would at 5.0’').
Even if it did bring sales (which i doubt) - something that is too small for a majority of SFOS users to find it acceptable makes it not a SFOS phone.
Edit: And remember, SFOS was made to not require you to be able to reach every corner of the phone with one hand from the get-go (it wasn’t trivial to do even back then). Very much unlike Android and iOS. So we should look at holdable and edge-reachable; not 100% reachable like some people seem to be hell-bent on.
(Leaving sales outside) Its not about making the smallest phone in the world but something that is ergonomically sound. Reach is a problem.
There are functions in SFOS that you need to be able to reach the top of the screen. (ie closing an app in one step). And i if i nitpick i can find a few more in apps and such. We can discuss if stuff like that need to be changed but thats another topic.
TBH i’d be more than happy if we get something iphone mini sized -and i’ll not whine much if it even needs to have a notch-.
I want something that can fit in a pocket, in my hand etc. And -on a somehow personal level- i’d love it if someone for once designed a fucking phone that was human centric and not a product designed by a committee that its job is to copy what sales. Hell i’d even work for free -using any skill i have- if someone decided to make something like that happen.
“All” the phones these days seem to be huge slabs so it would be really neat for once to have a phone of a smaller size. There was a Sony Xperia X Compact (model F5321 with physical size of 129x65mm and 4,6" screen size) in our household for a few years and I was dreaming (and still am) that one day there’d be a phone of about that size compatible with Sailfish.
I’ve had my Sony Xperia 10II (with SFOS) as daily driver for four years now and still notice almost daily that with the 10II’s size (which is the 6") the usage is too-often having to go up and down the phone when using it with one hand. And I’d say that I don’t have particularly small hands but they aren’t big either. Thus I voted for 5". Might anyway be in vain but here goes anyway ![]()
But, and just to end here: since bezels in today’s phones are mostly quite small, couldn’t this phone’s physical size be around 5" but have it be mostly screen.
I have to admit when it comes to the Jolla phones I always hope for pushing the sail boat out each time features wise, even if it does come at extra cost and longer times between phone releases as well as minor bugs from hardware needing to be optimised. Being able to push the envelope with one phone as a way to stretch what SailfishOS can do and then have the team gradually get it rock solid as a lighthouse over time before the next hardware expansion is something that both gives myself excitement for the future as well as a tangible reason to upgrade over my usual impulse to keep the same phone until it falls apart!
I would gladly buy a new device from Jolla. But since I am disappointed about the software already in C2, it’s unlikely for me to use it as a daily driver.
I pay easily up to 1000 euros for a medium spec phone, as long as software with pin lock for Android apps, NFC and bluetooth is solved.
Did anyone mentioned, that a waterproof phone like the xperia X10 III would be nice? The IP standard saved my phone and my data several times…
@Finway A phone with an aluminium frame and back (plus antenne stripes) would be ideal, but these are rare nowadays. There are no metal phones that we can open easily in order to replace the battery.
having the thing that charges your device also be the thing that connects your headphones when your walking around with the phone in your pocket is not a good plan.
care to elaborate? (20 chars)
feels like it should be unnecessary to do so, but…:
headphones get lots of use, so high risk.
phones used with headphones commonly live in pockets so high impact.
result is a high chance of damage to the ability to charge your phone.
does this make sense?
3,5mm jack is a must. Want to use my Marshall / Beyerdynamics / AKG / Sennheiser / whatever HiFi earpads and not some chinese BT stuff.
i know that there are also better quality BT headphones and earpads existing, but then surely it’ll come to the compatibility problem. (I know SFOS since 6 yrs meanwhile.)
Does esim work with Sailfish.
OIS on main camera please. It can be the only rear camera as far as I’m concerned. I have little use for low-quality additional cameras.
Would it be possible to have two Bluetooth modules in the smartphone, one for SFOS and one for AAS? Is just an idea.
If SailfishOS doesn’t support eSIM by now it really should in time for the the new Jolla phone.
Small phones: The Xperia’s ARE small in width, they are only looong.
What about a software solution for one-handed use?
Idea:
Create + install a system extension, that switches off the swiping stuff and replace with buttons.
Define a hotkey (e.g. vol down), when long pressed it brings a layer to top on screen (over the current screen), that contains buttons for the mentioned functions that are not reachable by one handed operation.
This way, instead of swiping, functions can be performed with the thumb of the same hand holding the phone and other hand remains free.
Selectable left or right for holding the phone preferred in the left or right hand.
A simple software extension for the existing phones.
Your opinions?
If this is a durability concern i read that the connector is designed to withstand 10K insertions/disconnections at least.
Do the math.
Nothing is immune to damage but this is a non concern to me.
Just amazing to include the community! Everyone have had great points for the next phone, hopefully there is enough demand and it will realise. If timeline is truly for Q1 2026 I am going to be super happy.
For locations I would mainly use it in Europe (including non EU countries) but I would need the device to work in Türkiye also. Don’t know what is the current situation.
Thanks Jolla!
