With the other half, yes thank you!
Rebranding an existing phone
For some reason Jolla cannot find an agreement with Fairphone and Volla to just simply port SailfishOS
Can we seriously believe that they will convince any serious manufacturer to use of their device forre branding?
Making a completely new phone
Jolla is struggling for years now with porting Sailfish OS on Sony devices
Who can seriously think that they have the resource to go into the design and the manufacture of a new phone?
I guess it depends who wants the phone to be there.
If it’s the manufacturer, Jolla will be payed to do the job.
In that case, sky’s the limit (=the customer’s pockets are).
I’d like an e-ink sailfish-os phone!
two Bluetooth modules in the smartphone, one for SFOS and one for AAS
Now that’s thinking outside the box
If better/hifi BTcodecs are supported, the jack is optional (imo).
Mainline kernel would be nice.
A USB-c to 3.5mm headset adapter has higher fidelity than bluetooth. …and the user has the choice whether to use it or not.
The simple usb-c to headset adapter could be replaced by an aftermarket DAC by the user.
I would use bluetooth at work and the simple headset adapter at home. For hifi I would use my main computer, an external DAC, a class-D amplifier and my absolutely lovely bookshelf speakers.
You lost me this year after all those years since Jolla 1, but you still have a chance with my wife. She doesn’t need a new phone now but she might need one in a year. Her choice depends on what will be available that time.
And why did you loose me? As a cloud infrastructure guy I spend my whole day automating, debugging, work-arounding and hacking and I am simply too tired to continue doing that during my personal time with my phone.
I know that 99% of the issues come from the stupid Android and trust me, I’d rather avoid it, but I cannot. I have to pay my bills and confirm payments using e-banking app, I need a 2FA app, I have to sometimes activate devices using a mobile phone (e.g. some EUC manufacturers require that, majority of security cameras require that). I need to be reachable while driving, thus having reliable hands-free is a must have for me.
Guys, half of it was working reliably on Jolla 1 and N9 before, but I was able to “live” with my XA2 Plus for nearly 5-6 years now but it needed a replacement. I tried to buy a refurbished Xperia 10 III for reasonable (not cheap!) money but they sold me locked Japaneese single-SIM version. C2 lacks too much to be even considered as a daily driver, it’s a development device and it’s good for that. And that was it, no other option was available (considering the price and age of the alternatives), no energy to continue. As I hate Android, you can imagine what I chose instead… And take this, older Pro versions are the same price as well preserved Xperias, but the experience is incomparable.
Let me say it in plain words, I can see again name of the caller on my car display, after all those years (!) because contacts are synchronizing, and not just that, messages are synchronizing! Good old N9 and Jolla 1 worked like this and I have it back! Battery life is exactly the same as with Android apps running in background but push notifications actually always work. I don’t need another phone(s) to activate new devices. There’s OLED with always-on function, oh, I almost forgot how great is that! Wait, there’s also the Swype keyboard I miss so much from N9! And my gps position is found instantly
Why am I telling you? I believe in feedback and continuous improvement. If there would be cheaper Xperia 10 II or III available, I would probably stay. And yes, I know about the jolla devices shop, but it is more expensive than I am willing to pay for used device from unknown source. If this device would be offered in the official store (provided in collaborative mode), I would probably tend to go for it. If C2 would be already fine-tuned and cheaper (compensation for the missing features), I might even consider going for that. Neither option was there at the time.
Choosing more expensive hardware for your new device and leaving the software behind for too long might not improve Jolla’s condition. It is vital to introduce a conservative dream device for a change.
Not too expensive, strong enough to have a very smooth experience, having all the long time missing features like the actually functional bluetooth, always-on OLED and some way to fast wake up the device (double-tap, finger sensor on back). That’s a good start. I don’t mind BT headphones as long as there is an option to buy a functional adapter to 3,5 from USB-C for those who prefer that.
Improving reliability of the existing features should be the next step. Packaging Android push notifications as an extension installable via Jolla Store is a must have for ordinary users (I cannot spend hours configuring devices for my family).
Improving backup/restore function is another “must have” for ordinary users. Ordinary user shouldn’t feel the need to install improved backup/restore app from 3rd party store or ask for help with restoring long-time popular 3rd party apps installed from the official Store.
As a parent, it would be nice to have an option to change DNS for the whole OS and lock it with parental lock. That’s the least one can do to protect its children.
If/when the device would finally be again a dream device, you can bet I’ll buy it. Until then, all the best.
First of all, closing shop during July and gradually re-opening during the first half of August is normal in Finland.
Secondly, it takes one person a few minutes to open a thread like this and it’s not even planning, just gauging the community. And nowhere does it say “after failure of C2”.
I can understand buyers of an Xperia X V getting impatient, but you are exaggerating.
With two wheels on each side. A 34" Flatscreen, at least three seats and a one week supply of food and drink. It should also act as a decent lawn mower and dish washer. Would it be to much to ask for a little case for a Swiss army knife?
Excuse me, what exactly did you want to say about a new Jolla phone?
I was going to say the same. Original Jolla 1 design with two layers, all the beautiful colours and removable back and battery was awesome! It would give Jolla back the distinctive look they once had. It was also very comfortable to use with rounded edges, well suited for swipe gestures. The two layers allowed good grip. Just update the specifications and make it slightly larger and you have a classic! And while at it, bring back the old pulley menu indication stripe, it looked so much better than the current one.
I know I made a long statement but it’s in the text.

And I second the comment bellow about Jolla 1 just upgraded. That would be a new classic.
The J1 wasn’t a good phone by any means people and whatever updates wouldn’t be able to save it from its badness.
Would that be with just one camera on the rear side?
I think people mean “a phone inspired by the looks of the Jolla 1”.
First of all I was thinking about working phone with Sailfish OS out of the box !When I say working I mean exactly that.No bugs,no workarounds,no fixes after 1-2 years or never fixed at all…complete and up to date working OS.I think this is much more important than 12GB ram or 1TB storage or 3-4-5 cameras.
- Could a slit between the two halves be used for buttons and such?
- Could the new Jolla phone be thicker than the 9.9mm of the J1?
- Could the edge of the new phone be flatter than the J1?
I personally liked the rear cover of the J1. An updated version for the new Jolla phone could house The SIM card, the SD card, the battery and some cash or a note to oneself. The rear cover wouldn’t be a fully fledged other half this time, though, as the NFC would be needed for other uses. …maybe even to wake the phone…
Not to mention that I make devices that simply don’t have bluetooth. AND I need my headphones to be ‘reference monitors’ when I’m not using my … reference monitors. My headphones are generally something like Sony MDR-V500 or V700s. I do sometimes use urban ears for on the road which compare with the MDR-V500. But, fact is, if I can’t use cables, I won’t know how it sounds somewhere. And i probably won’t like how it sounds otherwise. I’m not sure how people deal with this or if they just don’t care? EDIT: my studio monitors are Visaton co-axial systems, some of which have custom amplifiers.
