Next gen Jolla Phone

Make ANY reasonable 5 inch phone and you’ll have ZERO competition and a LOT of potential buyers. There is NO small phone that is good anymore. Go for it an profit!

For android support in sailfish OS get rid of the back button arrow. It isnt needed if the phone had a dedicated action physical button that can be configured to act as go back selection. So adding a configurable button in the next phone.

Some thoughts (even though i voted accordingly).

Want it small (5" xz2c sized or a bit smaller) to work in unison with the SFOS gesture UI and fit in a human hand. If you people have alien hands move back to your planet please. :alien:

It needs to be a global platform. A tool you can use globally with the least amount of hassle. (multiple e sims?? maybe)

As long as i can have proper BT support and can use the USB-C for audio out there is no need for a 3.5mm jack. Selling usb-c buds for some extra money won’t be bad.

Video out for the USB-C port and be able to power the phone through it. (connect a monitor to provide the power to the phone and output video from the phone to it) This will be a gamechanger and opens inf possibilities.

It doesn’t need to be the highest end of all chips but at least it needs to be fast enough and optimized.

Quality construction. It should feel nice to the hand. Like a quality tool. Doesn’t need to be metal but at least use plastics that are quality.

Some weather protection could also come handy.

No Notches please. They don’t look nice.

Nice industrial design. You cant avoid “the slab” these days but details matter and can make it stand out.

Some extra configurable buttons if possible. A switch like iphones have and maybe one more.

On the software side i don’t care much since you can always fix that later.

I’d prefer a smaller device, full hd screen is plenty for me, atleast been satisfied w/ the xa2. Rest of the specs are whatever, of course cheaper device is preferred, as long as it is performant enough.

However 2 most important features for me:

I need lots of storage for music, photos etc. SD card slot allows for less internal storage and easier data recovery in case of a catastrophic failure of the phone. I also have been utilizing USB otg storage.

3,5mm jack is a must. Leaving it out is just anticonsumer move, used mainly to push customers towards expensive (and more complex) wireless earbuds. USB-C dongles are not an acceptable workaround, I will not always have one when needed (I use phone as audio source in cars etc.).

(The lack of audio jack has disqualified the fairphone as my next phone, for instance)

You can get USB-C headphones at around 10euros. Without any dongles needed.

OLED as screen technology wasn’t asked in the poll. I think as a next Jolla phone this should be a must. This should be also good in combination with low power screen with time, weather, notification etc… .

I can handle the current Jolla C2 with its LCD and it is surprisingly good but in comparison to e.g. Xperia 10 iii the contrasts and colours are fade.

A new Jolla phone is unbelievably great news! Will keep checking this.

Ok, I’ll bite. Can you suggest a set that works with an Xperia 10III. I’d be happy to test, but haven’t had time to research. EDIT. I have never seen any that weren’t in ear ‘bud’ types. I might try an ‘in-line’ adapter if someone has a quality recommendation.

I don’t think that manufacturers wouldn’t produce smaller phones if there was a strong market for them.
And 6” phones at this day and age with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 1mm bezels, they feel pretty small already.

Random example:
6.3 inches iPhone today vs 5 inches nexus 5

I’d like to have two sim slots and different slot for memory card.

Aluminium case
400ppi+ screen
Glass or Aluminium back
3.5mm Jack
5000mAh+ battery
30W+ charger
100Hz+ screen
//
Rather Large cell for main camera (no zoom lens possible, so nothing crazy either) + stabilization
The most parts made/assembled in EU
350€-450€
//
6GB+ RAM
7" screen
Good uProcessor
Rather Good sound dsp + speakers (nothing crazy either)
//
As linux based:
USB OTG
Optionally, Header pins (like Motorola did once)

FHD is enough especially for battery based devices.

The options given, looks like more than a pc/server than a phone… and that would require a micro hdmi output.

Yeah, I know but I’m using an iPhone 13 mini and that’s still quite smaller than the nexus and I wouldn’t want anything bigger…

This math does not work out.
1080p at 7’’ comes up to just over 300 dpi only.

That is the point - merely asking for 5 does not tell the whole story.
6 is perfectly fine (nowadays) in the right form factor.
The small phone brigade needs to do a reality check with modern hardware.

Would a SIM card + a eSIM + a memory card be acceptable?

Don’t have a 10iii and don’t use wired stuff lately.

And yes i had in ear type stuff in mind. I wouldn’t be caught dead with over ears outside my desk.

So sorry i cant help. I just looked at prices on the web responding to the comment that usb-c headphones are expensive.

I’d like to add that having a phone at around 5inches might provide an alternative source of sales for jolla as long as the bootloader is open and people can spend the time installing Android on it. (Jolla obviously doesn’t need to put work on this). There was this small android project a few years back that showed that there probably is a percentage of people wanting a small device.

There are no phones at that size (iphone mini sized) and many people would be interested if the battery life is good and the chipset fast enough.

2400x1080
6.6"
400ppi

Hue :V

Very loose grounds there.
And it seems more than a suggestion for the hardware partner than Jolla.

Very tiny percentage it turned out - and it did fail.

Well, you did say FHD, which implies 16:9.
And 6.6 is kind of cheating.

But put that way the specs look pretty neat, indeed.
