The poll should have asked another thing too. I personally hate the camera notch (another reason for sony devices).
So if a new sailfish phone would be a complete new hardware device than that question (notch or not) should also be a community driven design feature.
Subscribe! Oled is a must!
Perhaps you could take the Eurostar to Amsterdam and we fix that problem.
Location in Europe makes collaboration easier I suppose. In the little list I mentioned Teracube could be left out. It’s US designed. In another poll I mentioned Shift too. That’s German, an interesting initiative with the same values as Fairphone. Only, Shift is probably not stable enough and I don’t know if they are open to other OS’es.
This sounds quite promising and exciting! I’m all up for it.
It could be the best Jolla device ever…however, if I (and many others) can’t buy it, then it doesn’t matter to me.
It would be a dream come true for many people if it could be purchased outside the EU, and if it could feature the amazing Finnish design and the specs updated for 2025/2026.
Shiftphones are available with Shift OS too, so a de-googled Android. The main problem ist that they need so long to bring their devices to the market with that pseudo-crowdfundig preorders.
Best choice with existing devices would probably be Volla, especially as they are interested in SFOS and already have devices with it, so that the most needed thing on that side would be licensing AppSupport. (Hopefully the Volla Tablet gets an SFOS port soon, it’s rumored that the port is already in work).
But the top choice would be a new, dedicated Jolla phone!
Official SFOS phone with good North American compatibility? Shut up and take my money, Jolla!
people travel from the US to the EU and back i agree should be both
For the display option for OLED or more knits so it can be read during daylight. Hard to do on the C2, matt display glass would be a plus.
From Malaysia. Hope you can sell it here
Talking about the size of phones, please consider that today’s large sized screen devices don’t typically fit into womens’ pockets, which are usually half the size of men’s (if they sew pockets into our clothing at all). I’m already over the limit with the 10iii for everyday jeans and it’s impractical to go any larger.
FYI in case this is something you’ve never had to think about before: Women's Pockets are Inferior.
Also yes please to considering the North American market. There is only one provider I can find in Canada (Fido/Chatr) and in the US (T-Mobile) that will work with Jolla compatible Sony phones. There is a growing market for alternatives to Apple and Android alongside awareness of data sovereignty.
I haven’t used the NFC for payments or transit cards but that would also seem to be important to work out.
Yes, that’s true. But smaller phone has smaller usability. Women often wear handbags (mee too), so no need for big pockets.
When going by bus, i always see nearly every woman has her huge 6,8 inch Android phablet, and permanently typing some social media stuff.
So huge majority uses big phablets by choice.
I’m quite happy with my C2 and do use it as my main phone since a few months back. However there are some clear pain points:
- performance (even some websites are close to unusable. Would like to be able to play videos on apps such as Instagram for example)
- Bluetooth for Android apps is a bit of a headache
- Camera quality not as good as I’d like
- phone overall a bit too big
- Missing fingerprint reader a bit annoying
I very much understand that this is quite individual and that many prefer a cheaper phone - but it would be amazing if it would be possible to offer the next mobile with a high-end option with better CPU/graphics and better camera. I would for sure be happy to pay more for that!
please make it at least splash-proof and at least somewhat resistant to dampness: for many people it will stay in their pockets and be subjected to occasional rain if they spend at least some time outside.
If this makes it less easy to repair that’s OK: avoiding the need to repair is way better then easy repairs
Sustainable materials aren’t even an option? Then I’m sure I won’t buy that Jolla phone but stick to second-hand smartphones. Currently I have a Sony Xperia 10 V and I’m waiting for a license to buy.
I’m really happy about the physical size of my experia 10 iii, the size suits me better than my iPhone 16 Pro.
The problems with Sailfish seem to be all software /firmware related.
Hopefully having new firmware will fix some of the problems
I have changed back to my iOS phone and will not buy another Sailfish phone until:
- All cameras work, and the quality of photos is good, Camera 2 API is supported
- The phone functionality is always working as expected, including 4g and emergency calling, with no echo
- Switching from Wifi to a mobile connection NEVER causes a problem for Android apps (Reliable internet in Android Apps)
- Android apps think that a lock pin is set (Unable to set lock pin for Android apps requiring it)
- Important Android apps such as Revolut ‘just work’
- I can block Android apps from listening to localhost (see localmess.github.io)
- Android apps can use Bluetooth (I know that there is now a workaround that can be found here in the forum)
- eSim is supported, also from Android, so that I can use an app like Airolo
==> in general, Sailfish needs to be a Better, more secure/private Android
I already have that now, its called ‘iOS’… But of course I would be really happy if the new Sailfish device could be a real alternative
As for price/ram/screen resolution : the more the better But the software has to work
How about all markets that were supported for the (please forgive me raising it) Tablet.
Obviously this would need not only volte but also emergency calling on volte
The only single biggest problem of Jolla has nothing to do with hardware. The software is outdated, full of bugs, forked away from upstream too far. eSIM, VoLTE and 5G are just the tip of a huge iceberg.
Another device will just bind scarce dev-time, while providing funding to survive another year. Luring in (new) users on new devices you mainly get their trust and a tiny bit of funding. Is the money worth disappointing and loosing many again?
We need AppSupport on fairphones etc, everything recent upstream without patches (Qt and so much more), much more openness whereever possible to allow for contributions.
Apart from Qt, what is?
Connman and ofono, sure. But not much else.
None of which upstream would have helped with.
I call BS.
