This one is already available, it’s called Jolla C2.
The new phone will explicitly be of a higher tier.

C2 cpu is for sure not mid tier
No that solidly qualifies as small - you even said it yourself:
While most people seem to agree modern phones are on the big side, going completely outside what sells well currently will alienate more people than it brings in. It has been said a gazillion times already in this thread.

You’re right. But this is subjective. if you’ll google “small” phones, you’ll notice some articles offer 6” as small. The point is, I don’t want large phone. There’re plenty of folk on r/smallphones that would gladly buy mid size smartphone as long as it has few years of updates, bare minimum specs, and ergonomics for one handed use.

I disagree. Linux is the entry barrier here. Only this factor will filter out ~97% of any potential buyers alone. And then you’re left with people like me, who won’t mind some inconveniences in favor of ergonomics and proper update life cycle that Chinese manufacturers don’t include.
Consider iPhone mini series (or whatever it’s called) - they sold well, and still popular choice for less than 6” phone with updates available. They were sold well since start, and this is IOS, not Android which popularity is even higher.
With all respect to anyone on the forum, I will stand on my point. Phones with 6” is untapped market right now, and people want a small-medium phones with quality of life features like 3.5mm jack, SD card, etc before evil corporation took it from us in order to sell their new overpriced packages and accessories.
No; this would constitute agreeing.
If we are already different, don’t be double-different without a very good reason.
I’m not so sure. I’ve seen like two. Ever.
A quick google search says 3%. And that doesn’t account for how many purchased the smaller version due to it being cheaper.
The counter argument to that can be that there is no single 5inch (or at least haven’t seen any) phone on the market nowadays. 10k sales for someone like Apple might be nothing but its not the same with jolla.
And to argue even more against the new phone being more than 5 inches ill say that there are enough big phones running SFOS already. (ports xperias etc)
And again sailfish is not android or ios. It is its own thing.
Overly wishful that it would compensate.
There was a post somewhere above where “Jolla should fix the lack-of-small-phones problem” and “people can install Android on it and drive sales”. The mental gymnastics is astonishing. Make phones to not cater to the intended use-case? Come on.
How do you know it won’t alienate more existing users than it brings in?
The C2 is really low-end and 10 V probably are going out of stock soon if they haven’t already.
You do realize that even if the phone is fully custom (which it won’t be) the screen needs to exist off the shelf for these quantities?
If small phones were actually a market, they would exist.
The Xperia 10s count as small nowadays.
[insert obligatory “the X/XA2 aren’t smaller in real-world usage”]
Yes, but a website on a phone screen is still a website on a phone screen.
No it isn’t, but C2 is clearly low end device. With under 400€ it is not realistic to ask mid tier CPU and everything else people have voted. That’s why Jolla has as cheap option as they can offer, which can be seen at those specs
We both don’t know until someone makes it and you know it. We can only guess. And i won’t have the slightest problem admitting i am wrong if someone makes it and fails.
The thing is that noone makes them. So even if you want one you cant buy it. The smallest out there are iphones at ~6”. And they all either copy that cause apple is successful (visually/aestheticaly also) or go for the wow factor of 8 inch phablets.
Since my xz2c broke i need a phone and for the life of me i can’t find anything to buy.
I’m not so sure. I’ve seen like two. Ever.
It’s a big market regardless of price point.
don’t be double-different without a very good reason.
I’m just trying to say that niche will remain niche no matter how shiny the package is. Under the hood there is still the dreaded Linux that nobody wants. Therefore, if you will market to casuals, it will be a situation where casuals won’t buy it anyway, but you will alienate niche users like me here.
I don’t see a big point arguing here though, I see poll is over already, and devs might be aiming for yet another shoe-sized smartphone.
I bookmarked it and will check out if anything changed in next year. It’s unlikely I will buy myself a new phone by then. But I’m not holding my breath for this one either.
I just don’t want that to be Jolla, okay?
This is the core of my argument.
iPhone 13 mini did 3% of iPhone sales before they were canceled.
And that’s including serving the cheaper segment, literal kids, and Android small-phone enjoyers that took the leap.
According to google apple sold 240 million iphones in 2021. Do the math.
I am quite sure that a well designed working phone would be bought by many -if not all- current SFOS users and as long as it can do what a normal linux distro can -which at the moment cant- will bring more geeks in. We have a lot to fix on the SW side to get the normal average joes.
And lets face it. Jolla made much bigger mistakes than making a small phone through its course ![]()
I did. 10’000 is a somewhat generous estimate.
If it is literally 5’’ i can see a good 25+% not bothering honestly.
As will any other size that works well, minus their respective exclusion factor. This is a non-argument.
No argument from me there. But i also think we can agree they don’t need more.
As i said earlier there are many big phones running SFOS. They can have one of those. Those won’t die overnight.
Yeah, that was not an argument on HW. Just that there are things need fixing -fast- on the SW side.
Some of the ram options (maybe all?) seem ridicoulus, 8 maybe 12 should be more then enough (16 gb is the same as a playstation5). Take e.g. Nothing Phone 3a, decent cpu and other specs for <350
I wouldn’t expect the same pricing as mass produced Android phones for the same specs.
no of course not, but I think you need to find a good balance between price and performance.
Its a niche product. I’d be good with a higher price as long as it fits my hand and works properly.
Why even wish phone for less than 350€, when there is C2 supported for long time at 300€ price? Why have two low specs device when you could ask another option from other tier. If you want mid-tier phone, expect at least 600€ price point (IMO). Price is something that Jolla just can’t push to the point where it is comparable to mass produced Android phone and they really shouldn’t if we want to see them to stay afloat and grow. They have to (or at least definitely should) add at least 50% margin for those units to make it worth the effort as they sell the units in 1000s (in my hopes next gen Jolla phone could sell in 10 000s). Low specs devices just aren’t that attractive for everyone (nor that profitable to Jolla), mid-tier is the level where Jolla should at least aim for.
The above phone was just picked as an example for somewhat decent hardware for a low price
. Of coure the jolla thingy would be more expensive, but something with similar specs shouldn’t cost more then 450-550€ (and the above seems to be a major improvement compared to c2 [again just as an example]
