Next gen Jolla Phone

How can we canalize the discution so that we get a little further with productive ideas? The top survey gave some results. Starting from the results, we already have a concept. From that concept maybe we can state our top 3 priorities and our top 3 “red flags” in short messages? Then users can ‘like’ these short messages, and getting a lot of likes may trigger some interest for the phone design plan?

Qi charging would not be built-in, but could be hidden inside the removable rear cover and connected to one of the two USB-c sockets, if needed. The plug from the Qi unit wouldn’t block normal charging because the other USB-c socket would still be available.

Having the fingerprint sensor in the display allows for additional functionality when unlocking the phone. A front-mounted sensor also makes the construction of the unusual rear side of the phone less complicated while also being more flexible.

Dual USB-c sockets also allows the use of an external DAC while charging. The phone would be able to both charge the internal battery as well an external power bank. The phone would also be able to charge or transmit data with one USB-c socket broken. …or copy from one storage unit to another.

Normally a larger capacity battery is necessary for a premium class device, but that can be compensated by using newer, more power-efficient SoC.

During this thread I have proposed using just one 50Mp rear camera with OIS, built into the slightly thicker body of the device without the need of a camera bump. One front camera with EIS would suffice, imho.

Some dust and waterproofing is fairly standard in current premium-class units.

A cardboard box would be fine to protect the unit during shipping, if the device inside is good enough. There would be no SIM extractor tool (or other tiny details) inside the box.

A choice to use premium-class components in the device would not allow a price below 400 €. But a price point typical for a premium phone should be possible, quite possibly even below 600 €.

Post 542 could be used as a starting point, feel free to compare to post 635 if you wish. I look forward to adding my thoughts to the productive ideas too.

BTW… Should I update post 542 from mid-class specs to premium ones? …or maybe post the update separately?

Not entirely. My remark was just to show how difficult it is to find technical information about a turkish only brand. For me, an other phone based on a reeder one would be a nogo.

You know that the SAR data will certainly be EU compliant if it’s going to be sold to you through Jolla, but if you really want to know a number today you only have to ask someone who owns a Reeder to check in their Android phone where it’s documented (according to the internet). There has to be some user forum where we can ask a Reeder user.

Or what other technical information would you need to have to influence your decision?

Here: “SAR Değeri 10g (Baş)” https://www.epey.com/akilli-telefonlar/reeder/

  • Reeder S19 Max Pro: 0.746 W/kg (should be same as C2)
  • Reeder S919: 0.775 W/kg
  • Reeder S71: 0.6 W/kg

This is a long shot but I’m really interested in a device similar to Blackberry Passport or Key series. That means a physical keyboard in the bottom of the phone. I absolutely loved that physical keyboard of the Blackberry devices. It’s a dream though as physical keyboards are difficult to develop, however if we can find the manufacturer of the physical keyboards of Blackberry let’s talk to them if we can still buy them. There seem to be some HW hackers who do this. Not sure if the keyboards can be bought new or if they are only salvaged keyboards.

Why is this important? I think that many users of Jolla sometimes use the terminal for example. A physical keyboard would help. Also texting, answer e-mails etc is much better.

Anyway, I’m good with 6” but OLED should have been a vote option because for me OLED is deal breaker. Those screens are so much better, at least for my eyes.

I also have this Blackberry past and the Passport was one of the best devices I have ever used, from time to time I love to take it from the drawer again…
But today a keyboard phone is maybe too niche ; there are manufacturers out there who produce the parts still, see Unihertz Titan 2.
And I agree: no OLED = no buy for me.
I did not even consider buying the C2 because no OLED. Blackberry Passport was my last LCD phone, Nokia N9 started OLED for me…

I think it would be very hard to beat Fairphone 6, in both specs and quality price ratio.

I know we are discussing first party hardware here, but the best Jolla could do to get the reasonable hardware and avoid production hassles is to cooperate with Fairphone and become one of the supported OS

If we are heading for a mid class/upper specs phone both Fairphone 6 and Shiftphone 8 would be good choices. Fairphone has NFC (found nothing about that on the Shiftphone page), while the Shiftphone ha Qi charging (what Fairphone doesn’t have, but maybe with an accessory). The Fairphone 6 looks a little bit better and may be the better option cause it’s already on the market and I guess it’s manufactured in much higher numbers.

Both the Fairphone gen 6 and the Shiftphone 8.1 have…

  • display aspect ratio of roughly 20:9. (size 6.31" vs 6.67")
  • two rear cameras, at least one with 50Mp.
  • punch-through front camera placement.
  • batteriy capacity around 4000mAh. (4415 vs 3820)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC. (7Sgen3 vs 778G 5G)
  • Qualcomm Adreno GPU (with proprietary driver).
  • support for eSIM. (built-in vs modular adapter)
  • at least 256GB internal memory.
  • a slot for SD card memory expansion.
  • a weight close to 200 gram. (191.4 vs “less than 200”)
  • fingerprint sensor. (in-power vs in-display)

Today I Learned…

  • that there are eSIM that look like physical SIM cards. …allowing the phone to have 2 physical SIM slots and still have eSIM capability. I still don’t know if those work natively on SailfishOS, though.
  • that Mediatek Dimensity 8400 is faster (and more energy-efficient) than Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s gen 3. (Both are premium-class SoC).
  • that the GPU of the 8400 is a Mali G720 MC7 (with both proprietary and open-source drivers available).
  • that most mobile phones today have displays with aspect ratios higher than 18:9.
  • that soon I won’t be able to access this forum with my Xperia XA2 (running SailfishOS) with the stock browser.

I would be totally happy with official support in fairphone 6, but even if the negotiations would go well I would imagine that Jolla would like to have at minimum 50€ (VAT 0%) per sold phone. I just have a feeling Fairphone would want something in return and I think they wouldn’t calculate the benefit of maybe increased sales volume as only benefit. I hope I am wrong but there has to be some reason why the co-operation didnt take air under the wings before. I would imagine that they want some kind of commission or similar which would increase price of the phone to end user. And if there is 100-150€ gap for stock android version, but possibility to flash the SFOS on their own, would anybody buy the SFOS version?

But if Jolla launch phone of their own they can make probably somewhere 150-200€ profit per phone without commissions. I can see why that option looks promising to Jolla as they wouldn’t rely to any other company outside the HW provider.

For me, personally, the Next Gen device will probably be the most expensive phone I have ever purchased. Worth fighting for.

But to be honest, I can already see a slightly larger and even more capable Jolla device in the future. It is better to release a simplified product first and then follow up with a more feature-packed one. I just can’t muster up the same level of excitement for the latter, though. For me, less is more.

…but hey! A phone with an all-big octa-core is still quite… something.

Fairphone is a company/phone “designed” with ethics as its main point of sale. Its their way of trying to stand out in the overcrowded market of android phablets. From a function POV they don’t offer anything special.

As i usually say SFOS is not android so all the phones that are designed with android in mind will be a compromise one way or another.

Fairphone 6 price is €599 with android 14, and with /e/ OS is at €649. I guess a margin of €50 is not that good for Jolla. On the other hand the Fairphone models cycle is 5+ years long, something that would suit SFOS too.
