Next gen Jolla Phone

This device seems to me like an example of the realization of the desired feature set: https://shop.shift.eco/shiftphone-8 (apart from unrealistic features like two usb ports)

Sorry, their website for some reason does lack an english option

Very nice and interesting device but keep in mind incl. Sailfish OS Adaption it would be more expensive.

I expect that, but I struggle to imagine how much of a difference that would be, and if the cost is a constant or would rise proportionally with the original device price

To most Android and iOS users even the idea of another OS is pretty much unrealistic.

  • A fingerprint sensor integrated in the display was once unrealistic.
  • A multitasking Linux distribution on a phone was once unrealistic.
  • More than one rear camera was once unrealistic.
  • A front (or “selfie”) camera was once unrealistic.
  • A touchscreen phone was once unrealistic.
  • A mobile phone was once unrealistic.

I sincerely hope that something smaller than a phablet isn’t unrealistic.

Although I used to work as a graphic designer I’ve avoided mentioning the packaging. – Cardboard would do. The simplicity of how Mikrotik package their network devices is nice, as inspiration.

Commented on the CPU. – An all-big-core 8 × Cortex A725 in 1U+3P+4E configuration (combining it with a Mali G720 MC7 GPU running open source Panthor drivers).

Wrote about the display too. – Aspect ratio (suggesting 18:9 for a good view of the landscape), OLED (for the possibility of low-power mode instead of a LED) and a 147mm diagonal / 5.8 inch size (for a device small enough to grip safely).

…but yes, carefully steered clear of mentioning anything even remotely resembling the aesthetics or inner workings of blablabla, mainly not to reveal my intimate knowledge of the subject.

yes. incremental improvements please. consolidate, reduce the bugs. empower the os (and hence the user)

Been thinking about the use of an in-display fingerprint sensor.

  • The sensor should be in the centre of the display.
When reaching for the phone to unlock it, the centre is the only location on the device that always “feels” the same regardless of from what direction the sensor is accessed.
  • The fingerprint sensor could be combined with one or more icons.
Drag one of the randomly placed icons of the lock screen to the sensor area and unlock directly to the camera in photo mode. Drag another icon to the sensor and unlock to video mode. Drag a third icon to the fingerprint sensor and change the USB setting to safe charging mode without unlocking the phone. The lock screen can be configured for a few icons or for many.
  • A NFC device (tag, ring, card or similar) could be used to reveal the fingerprint sensor for a two-step authentication method.
  • A numeric lock could also be used to reveal the fingerprint sensor.
The numeric lock (6-digit decimal or hexadecimal) would combine with a fingerprint to create another two-step authentication method.
  • Of course NFC, numeric and fingerprint unlocking could be combined.

…creating some really annoying ways to snooze on a Monday morning.

I do not think it would not be possible but i do expect the Jolla C3 to be an adapted already existing device, like the C2. Thus, i must conclude, something like 2 usb ports won’t happen

Regrettably I think you might be right and we’re all being served another multi-camera phablet off the shelf. Quite the opposite of “unlike”, imho.

But another part of me is still dreaming.

I think that is exactly what we (and maybe Jolla themselves) not know right now. A next-gen Jolla phone indicates that it may be a real Jolla device to follow the original Jolla Phone. A C3 instead would be the follower of adapted phones. So this is a thing to be announced in the future, but I hope for a real new Jolla phone, not a community phone.

I am almost certain that the next jolla phone makes sense to be a continuation of C2, ie a Reeder model with better specs than C2., eg S71(?)

Mediatek Dimensity 8200, 6.95 inch display, 12 GB RAM, 500 €…

I think it was replied earlier, developing and maintaining SailfishOS has a cost. The other alternative is to buy that device at a much lower subsidized price by google.

And SAR?

________________________

I can’t find SAR numbers for Reeder s71.

And that’s the problem

The Reeder site doesn’t specify physical size, wifi type or SIM card size either.

SAR on turkish made phones shall shall follow the same SAR requirements/regulations than the ones on EU market. Jolla C2 owners can check it on their own fine print.

Haha i may sound a little judgemental here, so i hope my little joke isnt offending, but is the conversation getting a little out of hand?

Qi, underdisplay scanner, double usb socket… And clearly its a MUST of course to have 30.000mah carbon ultraligh battery, 7 back cameras, 3 selfie cameras of 100mpx and device shall be waterproof for diving 30 meters, its packaging shall be fsc wood and have a cooling fan for gaming…. All under 400eur, obviously .
