If we’re talking about rear covers (again :), then I’d like to add that it’s fairly easy for the manufacturer to add a few pins on the backside, where the rear cover can plug into. And that would be fun as heck: Having a USB port as pins for all sorts of rear cover shenanigans (missing status LED? Let the rear cover light up like a christmas tree).
If the phone has two usb-c sockets then one could be a full host and the other could be charging only.
A charging only socket could prevent USB shenanigans when borrowing a “friend’s” cable…
That would be very nice to have. Public chargers can’t be trusted.
Or like Fairphone 6 offers: a easy to change USB-C-Port.
if you use the existing charging only usb mode you should not need this precaution
Then there would be no extra socket för usb-c shenanigans either.
Use case
DAC for better sound plugged in.
Phone battery low.
Long commute.
2 usb-c sockets.
Don’t get me wrong, I do not oppose 2 usb ports, I just want to point out that you can have secure charging with the existing technology, also without hardware limitation to charging only of one of the ports
I was just wondering why no mobile device has more than one USB-C port, including tablet PCs.
Two or maybe three should not be hard to have.
Two full usb-c ports with one defaulting to charging only, perhaps?
Sounds nice, I would be into it, two USB-C makes more sense, the more I think about it
Whatever the new specs are, phone fundamentals must work fine, without the quirks we sadly had to get used with.
I don’t need a new storage device with 48GB of RAM, neither an usb hub with 120hz screen.
I need a reliable phone (ie, sound doesn’t go AWOL at random moments, on the move ot under stress ) with reliable network connectivity, BT, etc.
A half working Frankenstein - no thanks, be it a revolutionary piece of HW.
The Xperia IV/V situation, where things are out of Jolla’s reach, is tempering me.
Choosing the hardware wisely will make the software easier to implement.
Yes, this should be one of the most important things!
Whatever it’s gonna be for me, if port won’t be JP1 quality with:
- good calls quality,
- working echo cancellation,
- usable loudspeaker (yep I’m looking at you, Xperia ports ….),
- screen of decent contrast/brightness usable outdoor (no need for high refresh rate or super high resolution),
- reliable WiFi,
- VoLTE working OOB.
You may pack your things and don’t even bother.
Nice to have:
- microSD card slot (may be shared with second sim)
- 3.5 mm jack for headphones.
Would you give up the premium spec’ed components and instead have a mid-class phone with all hardware properly supported by the OS?
I would say that NFC is a make-or-break requirement for many users in Sweden. Currently my bank NORDEA with its 10 milj customers, one of the issuers of BankID used in a lot of government sites, financial institutions and on-line stores, requires NFC to talk to your ID-card/Passport before downloading the BankID. And without BankID you can’t use SWISH, the most popular and common peer-to-peer payment system in Sweden. In 2024 15 milj payments totalling 15 BSEK went through SWISH.
I agree that a modern phone without NFC is silly. However, your statement is very likely wrong (but that’s for a relevant thread to explain).
Please don’t use the words “most popular” when talking about Swedish banking systems. They are all monopoly requirements, without the possibility to choose anything else.
That said, of course we need NFC, not in Sailfish but in AAS.
Waste of space and internal wiring in the phone, there are USB-C cables that do not have data transfer.
EDIT:
But as wikipedia writes “As of April 2023 there have been no credible reported cases of juice jacking outside of research efforts.”
