Next gen Jolla Phone

#1 priority feature: worldphone. a modem with LTE+NR bands for north+south america, asia, and europe would be wonderful. i remember taking my N9 to other continents and having it Just Work. no jolla phone has ever had that.

#2 priority feature: sdcard! who cares about huge internal storage when sdcards are fast enough to write 4k 60fps video?

#3 priority feature: physical buttons. i love me a dedicated camera button, and i hate the soft volume buttons on weirdo ‘modern’ phones.

add a halfway decent camera, and everything else is just gravy. (oled, zoom lens, 3.5mm, huge ram, all would be nice, none would stop me paying huge money for it)

Oh yes. So annoying to use NFS or CIFS (or UFS, UFS is great for removable storage) on one device only do find out there’s no support on the next one.

Up those check-kernel-configs scripts in the HADK and do actually build those ‘optional’ features.
Also: why never kernel modules? Make stuff modular and ship it in separate optional packages.

I am talking about this list: mer-kernel-check/mer_verify_kernel_config at master · mer-hybris/mer-kernel-check · GitHub

Oh let me answer that one. Or why missing linux cli tools? Because according to what Jolla said, they don’t want you to be using it as a linux phone. It’s supposed to be for end user, no meddling in cli, or kernel modules nono you’re too dumdum for that only gui for you, this is not linux so limit all the linux stuff you can do

No, it is not. Try to run OSM Scout with 4GB RAM only.

i run osm server and puremaps with 1GB ram

Yes! Ideally take Xperia XA2, and shrink top and bottom bezels and leave just enough space for camera, RGB LED and stereo top and bottom front facing speakers. Keep the side bezels as thin and curved as on the XA2. If the display is 5 inches (Xperia X) the phone size will be 132 x 68 x 7.7 mm - easy to use with one hand and easy to pocket! Same form as Nokia N9 but bigger.

Jolla C2 (right now writing on it) plus fingerprint sensor plus optimized firm- and software would be way sufficient for me…

Happy to see this new project.
Voted.
However, I’d dream of something simple, modest and well working. Something like a modernized XA2 with RCS and a good picture ability.
600€ would probably be much too much for me for a phone.
An used XA2 costs between 10 and 50€ and is almost perfect for my needs.

Even if it’s not on the top fashion anymore, an eco friendly device (common changeable battery + repairability + not a performance monster) would be much appreciated on my side.

voted, very nice to have the ability to shape the future of a next gen jolla device

imho 128 gb of space is enough, if you insert also an sd card slot it would be perfect to have more space, but if not, 128 gb is already good. More would be nice but i do feel it will just make the price increase for no real benefit

i voted for 12 gb of ram cause there wasn’t 8, but i feel 12 is enough even for android apps, and 16 or 24 imo are just pointless on a phone

i would love for the screen to be fhd+, i mean, my xa2 which is almost a 10 years old phone is fhd+, so…
no need for 2k or 4k but going lower than fhd would really be a regression
screen can be something like 6inch, neither too big or too small, will probably please everyone

megapixels are not important on the camera if the camera is already good quality, so even if it’s something like 24 mpx would be good enough, maybe with an ultrawide cam. The xa2 has an ultrawide camera and honestly it’s fantastic, so why not. Also, the front one can also be 8 mpx, until is at least usable (contrary to what is now on the xa2)

as a bonus, 3.5 jack, sd card and rgb would really be awesome

oh and please, no notch, have borders as big as you want but no notch

Now to the main point :stuck_out_tongue: i feel like price should be something like 300/350€ and if that would mean like reducing the internal memory to 64 gb, i would take it. I know it’s not so easy but keep in mind that for just a little more we could buy an xperia…

Whether it is a Finnish design like the Jolla 1 or the N9

Nowadays a phone not being able to survive a submerge into water or not being usable when it rains would be a complete show stopper for me (as a sailor ).
At least IPX6 or IPX7 are must haves in my opinion.

Not since I started building games for sailfish. Some of my games requires 8gb along with the system to run smoothly plus if you want to run A.I. models while playing locally you need at least another 4Gb (A.I. powered NPCs are supported in some games).
More memory also means more linux games could be ported to the phone that may not be currently possible due to low ram.
Because of games and A.I. I voted for 16Gb which will be very soon the standard.

Agree, the next community device shouldn’t permanently suffer limits.

I voted for an RGB LED, but it would be even better if the screen had a true low power mode so it could always display a clock and missed notifications when it’s outside your pocket. And true tap-to-wake… I really hope this is within the realm of possibility given the amount of choices on offer.

In the same sense, I voted for a fingerprint sensor because it’s the easiest way to unlock devices without tap-to-wake, but if you have tap-to-wake, then the sensor is not as important.

I voted for a 5 inch screen but 6 inch would be doable as well. It’s true that the bigger the screen, the bigger the battery you can put in it, but a smaller screen can do with a lower resolution so it won’t eat through the battery as quickly. Regardless, I’ve found that if you’re going to be out and about using your phone a lot, you’re going to be carrying a powerbank with you anyway, so whether the battery lasts a few hours longer or not is not crucially important.

I’m surprised most people seem to vote for the lowest amount of RAM. Android applications get more bloated every day and that’s something we won’t be able to change, so after you’ve had the phone for a couple of years, you’ll probably run into OOM issues again. 16 GB seems like a safer, more future-proof choice here.

I would love Jolla Flip phone (clamshell type) Anyway I´ll probably buy the next gen Jolla Phone.

edit: probably added

I think it’s great that Jolla receives requests from the users… would buy a Jolla net gen…

It means Xperia 10 IV/V will be forgotten?

But the idea to deploy a next gen Jolla Smartphone is nice.
I voted for Dual SIM - because it’s important (two physical sim would be the best choice). RAM is very important. It’s a device for more than an year - 16GB or more will be better - I think 24 GB would be ok because of Android support. Without it 8GB for SFOS could be enough.

We should not forget it’s a device for more than a conract from a mobile provider. We want to use the device a long time. We shouldn’t save ressources and money for the project

That’s ridiculous. What are you doing that would come anywhere near using that?

Will it be possible to finally resurrect this 16 year old tech for OLED? I’d love to see animated post man bringing new envelope on a locked screen

Also, nowadays most phones turn on screen by simply moving/picking it. Then unlock with fingerprint. So if those implemented along with Always On Display, Double Tap can be used for locking the phone instead power button.
