Next gen Jolla Phone

Thanks Jolla!
Very nice gesture

I’d say processor power matters.
With full typical usage (aas and many apps open), Xperia V shines in speed and fluidity, but after the V its just too painfull to be back to C2 level for speed of operations (slow to open apps, switch btw them and so on). The V has less ram (6) than the C2 (8), still its not the Ram that here matters the V is so much snapier. The Xperia 10 II with 4g ram is still so much faster than the C2. So a mid-range snappy processor matters, to me.

Still comparing with C2, better speakers would be great ;). Obviously price is higher than C2 it would be nice so that speed, screen and sound would be getting closer to that of the Sony levels…

For markets expension, Türkiye is big and dynamic, promissing if you ask me.

It is really great that Jolla is asking the community what we think we would like to see, thank you for that!

I think two important points are missing:

  1. CPU - i would like to vote for a device with a powerful CPU. The CPU of the Jolla C2 is (for me) disappointing. It is lagging all the time, apps do need a lot of time to start and even sometimes during playing music i got micro stutter. So for me a CPU is very important.
  2. QT6, I think this topic has been discussed already at so many places. We need a reliable software stack which is not heavily outdated.

Thank you again for reaching out to the community! I was playing with the thought about to buy a Fairphone 6, but now I am more than happy to wait.

I’m also interested on biometric login and nfc

SD card slot is a must. This enables me to have proper encryption the way I want it in order to protect photos, recording and some DBs.
FM radio would be a bonus for me.
My daily driver is Xperia 10 II. Works well, only short on RAM here and there as I still need android support for banking apps if nothing else.

Don’t forget things like NFC and the software side to make paying with it possible. I’ve been using Sailfish for more than 10 years, but it’s increasingly frustrating to see what others do with their phone while I often feel like I’m stuck in the past with my Sailfish phone. I still like the UI and all better than what the major OSes have, but without the functionality, I’m not sure what my next phone will run.

I really need a good and fast positioning service. Up to know it’s almost impossible to take photos with Geotagging if you don’t have gpsinfo running in background.

I voted for 6", but I think that screen size and resulotion depend on another - so a smaller screen won’t need a high (4K) resolution. (The resolution of C2 is BTW bad for that screen size).

Not really hardware related, but RCS support is a must for future devices/SFOS versions.

Lets keep things reasonable:

  • 8 GB of memory would be enough for today but if we want futureproofing then 12 GB is ok
  • 128 GB storage + SD CARD slot
  • Would pay a bit more for an OLED screen - 6’’ is fine, larger than that is tablet territory
  • Nice to have but not absolutely required: fingerprint, double-tap-to-wake, 3.5mm audio, replaceable batery

I suppose that choosing the right SOC is also important for device longevity because we do not want it to be stuck on old kernel after two years. Are there any SOCs with (close to) mainline support?

1000% this. Not having NFC-based payments is frustrating. I understand there is a massive amount of work that would be involved in the software-side, but I would be content with at least a commitment for a native payment solution (no, not Google Pay via AppSupport) and the NFC otherwise not being usable for payment OOTB (I could still maybe use it with HA and programmed NFC tags).

When I was at the community meetup I had the opportunity to try an Xperia device from the nice fella sitting next to me (sorry, terrible with names!) and the form factor and build quality was fantastic. I LOVED the screen size. It didn’t feel like a monster to hold. A device of this form factor from Jolla, with good cameras (and working video for Pete’s sake), a 1440p min. screen, and a replaceable battery would be a no brainier for me.

In terms of the BT AppSupport, I assume that being a priority / polled option might mean 2x BT chipsets? Otherwise I am a bit puzzled why that would be coupled with a new device rather than software progression.

Thank you Jolla team for involving your community in the priorities of the device. Big W, shows how Jolla continues to be unlike others.

The technical side is the small part. Good luck finding a payment provider willing to work with us and setting up all the liability insurances (needing gazillions in revenue).

Phone payments are stupid. “Let’s make a card that can break and run out of battery” - no thanks. Just get a passive wearable (e.g. a ring) and be done with it.

Not really interested in debating you on it, simply respectfully disagree. It is great that such functionality isn’t important to you, I am sharing about my expectations for a modern mobile device. Everyone is going to have different expectations and priorities.

IMHO

  • If the display has low power mode then I won’t need a dedicated LED.
  • If there is an alternative for 8GB RAM then I would choose that.
  • If there’s an eSIM then I would be happy with one physical SIM card.
  • If there’s a SD card slot then the internal storage could be small.
  • If there’s one fast rear camera then I would be happy with that.
  • If there’s stable wifi 6 then that would be good enough for me.
  • If the front has really tough glass then the rear could be plastic.
  • If the rear cover is plastic then there might be a replaceable battery.
  • If the USB-c port supports a dock then I don’t need pogo pins.

Trivia

  • 599€ is the asking price for a Fairphone 6.

I would like the same thing for myself

FM radio was more that a bonus on the Iberian Blackout. It was the best source of information.
Some people used it in their cars, I had an Xperia X with Android.

Digital Euro is coming in EU in October.
Soon after, cash will be scrapped for everyones safety.
Everyone will be paying with phone

Cant wait for the next one coming after scrapping Cash. Will be fun in the EU - the Club of the Rich…

Specs are important, in the current state, 4GB might barely still be enough; but if you want to be able to grow and flourish it obviously has to be bigger. 8GB being the bare minimum, 12-16GB being more current, and 24GB+ being future proof.
I’m thinking about fully fledged office suites and browsers, better graphics, better multitasking and no compromises with running Android alongside.

Also, through my non-technical eyes, SFOS hasn’t changed a lot since I’ve first used it on the Fairphone 2, not that change for the sake of change it is needed, but improvements are welcome. Better specs allow for easier transitioning into that.

The C2 is my stepping stone for the Fairphone 6 port to come out, but for me personally it’s atrocious; it’s heavy and big to the point of being unwieldy, having Android running in the background slows the entire phone to a crawl, same with the Patchmanager, the screen is not only 60Hz but even LCD, the GPS fix is poor; in fact I’d happily use a Fairphone 2 over the C2 atm. And most of that poor experience is due to the specs; not the state of the software.

for android and maybe running multiple virtual machines which nobody does on a phone, not for sfos

I can’t believe that Bluetooth for Android apps was mentioned and most people voted for better repairability.
Where exactly is the problem right now with repairability that is so huge to prioritize it over something so problematic right now like BT over Android apps?

Hello Jolla leader, thank you for this survey. Sailfish still is the system I like most and I would love to use a new phone with it. Only one feature wasn’t mentioned: sound. To me it is important because the sound of the C2 was awful in combination with hearing aids.
About screen size: inches don’t say it all. The Xperia 10 III has a reasonable size in inches, but is really narrow. To me Volla 22 has a good screensize : not too small, not too big.

You are talking with a guy that repairs stuff as hobby for decades, has an HMD skyline (“repairability extravaganza” phone) and is fully aware of that community as well.
So if you think you can straighten my thinking with some new information I am not aware of, please do so.
