Next gen Jolla Phone

Jolla has already decided to go with the platform they’ve been offered to use. We, the users, have been asked about some details. …and we are providing them. Still, Jolla (Jolla Mobile Ltd, I think) has the final decision, not us.

I’m guessing that in the end, we’ll get something like CMF Phone 2 Pro, to be honest. But until then I’m free to dream of a 5.8 inch phone with a 1080×2160 OLED display and just one 50Mpx OIS rear camera. A device I can connect to the wifi6 network of my off grid dream house, if I ever get to build it.

So please don’t wake the sleeping wolf yet, OK?

I see the the front RGB LEB isn’t very popular in the poll. Personally I don’t know how to use a mobile phone that doesn’t have one. How am I supposed to know someone sent me a message? Unless we get an always-on AMOLED screen.

On an amoLED display each pixel is its own backlight. So if you want to light up just one blue pixel on an otherwise black display then that is possible. So it is possible to add notification icons or dots that only use very little energy. New displays can also lower the refresh rate when using that night mode, some displays as low as 10Hz.

For LCD displays all of the background has to be lit up, which makes the notification LED a better choice. It uses less energy.

So…

But that’s just my preference.

We cannot have Mediatek device ported. This CPU its closed source and they are notorious about this.

Yeah, I miss LED on C2 very much.

OT:  , I saw that with my own eyes some years ago. Not kidding but it was an email to the cat shelter .

Elop was a good pawn for destroying Nokia and Meego.

Indeed, that’s still a shame (but off-topic).

That’s true. It would be nice to know where back there, who want to destroy Nokia.

What i mean is that regardless of what SoC that is chosen it’ll still be a huge phone with a myriad of cameras, AI to “improve” everything and a fancy design intended to be used with two hands.

The C2 uses an Unisoc T7200 (formerly called T606) SoC so who knows what chipset Jolla will choose this time. Maybe a Unisoc again, like the T8300?

Most SoC come with proprietary drivers and other lock-ins. The difference is only to what degree.

USB C that supports video out please please please. A jolla with containers and a bluetooth K&m and video out to a decent monitor and I won’t need a laptop anymore.

The phone could be used as a touchpad so you only need the keyboard…

Full agree! Very good idea! Screen mirrored to monitor, BT or USB keyboard and the phone display as a touchpad! So physical mouse is no more needed.

Trivia…

Trivia…

It would be better to turn the display of the phone into a notification ticker, if possible, while using the touchscreen for simulated touchpad control.

As long as the HW allows USB-C video out (and power) all the rest are details that can be handled in the SW. A big chunk of work but if the HW is there its doable.

Here is an anecdote for the fans of small devices: when Apple came with bigger phones for the first time, some worried that the new devices wouldn’t fit in their pockets. Apple Amsterdam hired a Turkish tailor, who posted in front of the Apple store with a sewing machine on a cargo bike. He offered to enlarge everyone’s pockets on the spot for free!

This kind of reminds the anecdote with the first sony walkman.

This announcement is music o me! Since half a year I had my sim in a Volla 22. I have Threema Libre on it. At the moment I have no Sailfish device with which I can make video calls via Threema. However the phone function of the Volla doesn’t work properly anymore. So I have put my sim in the Xperia XA2 plus again. With patience I am looking forward to a Jolla 2. No hurry!
As you suggested we do now more on our devices than a decade ago. My first smartphone, an iphone 3Gs, fitted in the palm of my hand, but I use my phone now differently (reading e.g.). A Jolla 2 can give a boost to creativity in game making etc.
To my opinion a medium size with a ‘normal’ aspect ratio will be best.
The announcement suggests that you already have contact with a manufacturer. Whoever it is, compliance to EU rules makes the new phone more future proof.
If Jolla wants crowdfunding, I am in.
Good luck!

That was my first mobile phone. Still have it: Sony Ericsson walkman, a little miracle, with radio. My first smartphone: iphone 3Gs. Then Jolla 1.
