Firstly, thank you Jolla you’ve done a great job with the C2. To produce such a phone at that bargain price is remarkable . The continuing OS updates are ironing out bugs. For instance bluetooth audio did not initialise to start with but was fixed in the last update. My Android eAudio library book app now works fine. The bluetooth contacts transfer was easy and straightforward from my Xperia iii from the start.
I do not take a phone outside my house with any financial capability, the risk of loss or theft I consider makes this unwise. The C2 works with three different banking apps and that of my energy provider. I only use it on WiFi . A phone number is the key identifier for cross device tracking . The C2 is new, the Xperia iii is 2019 ? . What I need is replacement for the Xperia that is small enough to carry easily. Tasks requiring more screen space I can do at home.
No. Headphones cable is used for that.
Some Nokia phones have wireless FM radio with built in antenna. Allows the use of Bluetooth headsets. …or phone speakers.
The antenna used to be the cable of the headphones. That is how it is on the Xperia X.
Hopefully not. Those things are just another run to the mill iphone/samsung s copycat. We can do way better than that.
I don’t remember if it was on Top Gear or one of the DVDs they were doing at the time, May and Clarkson were reviewing the Lexus LFA. And one of them said that the car felt “Like an intelligent product designed by intelligent people”.
This quote hit me hard because its “exactly” how a product should feel. And those stuff feel like they were designed by a lazy unintelligent committee copying the best sellers just to run android on.
We are not android and we shouldn’t strive to be that. SFOS is a different thing and jolla should embrace that and fix what needs fixing while providing HW that works along the OS.
Plus if they choose to release something like that will render this whole discussion useless.
I disagree with the Lumia 950 XL - but the Lumia 950 would be perfect… .
I always asked myself if it would be possible to bring new life into those old phones with another software/os…
Hope sale HongKong or China .
i Wish it was 5 inches screen, too big by 6 inches
Essentially unofficial ports using open source encryption implementation have it all solved already. Those ports with working fingerprints have it simple to use too. In addition, very long encryption key is generated based on your separate from PIN short key (alphanumeric) and HW based key. So, you are also protected from data dump to PC and brute-force decryption.
Lexus is a luxury car division of Toyota, the equivalent in mobile phones would be a division from samsumg maybe?
Very likely the next jolla phone will be an existing Reeder model with minor modifications.
Best phones I have had are probably (not totally in order):
Nokia N900
Xperia 10 III
Jolla Phone
Nokia N9
Xperia X
Even though we surely won’t get another N900, something in the format of the others is what I want. Not too large, not too much bells and whistles that I don’t need, not too expensive.
The quote wasn’t about how luxurious something is (in terms of materials) but on how correct it feels when using it.
Of course you can go mad and gold plate this, titanium that, glass the rest etc but if not everything works together it wont feel right. Ie. the N9 was plastic but felt nice to hold to use to interact and did things right.
This was interesting survey, made me think how I have used my mobile phones in the past and how I think I would like to use them in the future. Sailfish (and before that Meego) user since early 2010, so obviously I prefer the swipe interface, therefore:
- screen size 6" or thereabout and ratio so that swiping from any direction isn’t a stretch.
- also OLED, so that something like Nokia sleeping screen is possible (or the community thingy for N9), so put in the needed HW for that to be possible, don’t need a led then
- replaceable parts isn’t as important as almost every phone is doable with little extra effort compared to fairphone for example. Just don’t glue up things too tightly.
- design, bigger N9/N8 would be optimal, Jolla C1 type of specialty would be ok too.
- If BT could be made a lot more reliable than it’s now, then 3.5mm jack isn’t necessary. If it doesn’t compromise anything else would be a bonus
- a lot better working BT, with maybe possibility to “buy” better BT codecs, also working with let’s say my Suunto would be nice. Android support should also be better
- NFC payment is probably too difficult for such a small ecosystem as jolla/sailfish, but would be nice bonus
- fingerprint sensor, maybe, I don’t use any lock screen or anything currently though
- 2 simslots/esim, plus sd card: don’t need to have more than 128gb internal storage
- camera needs to be a lot better than it was with xperia x
- RAM: 12Gb seems like a good round number
- wifi 6 is already plenty fast
Maybe one camera? It’s better when one camera works good than two cameras works bad. Even apple understand this.
on format; i do like the 21:9 6" screen of the 10 series, as it gives maximum screen for one-handed use.
on the other hand, the two things my phone [must] do is access internet services (web/chat), and read epub files, and for that latter task i do really miss the larger/wider 18:9 6" screen of my XA2 Plus…
A 6.0 inch 1080 × 2160 pixels (18:9 or 2:1) display might be a goldilocks choice.
Most videos are 16:9. The extra pixels of the 18:9 display could be used for sound controls, tiny coloured notifications or a progress bar.
Most motion pictures are 21:9 which would be wider than the 18:9 display but this time leaving some pixels for volume control or a progress bar.
The choice of sound or progress controls could be a gesture. Push the landscape-displayed content up and then move the point of progress. Pull the displayed content down and control the volume.
For us text readers the display would be perceived as slightly larger. …especially when reading in dwarsligger (or landscape) mode, like I mostly do. Here the extra pixels could be used to skip chapters or jump to bookmarks or annotations.
I would not worry about the price too much; this is a niche product, and most users here are aware that it will be “overpriced” compared to mass market products. Even Sony phones are “overpriced” compared to more mainstream offerings.
As a user from the very early days (crowdfunding of the original Jolla Phone), I must say that level of quality of that phone was never reached. If Jolla wants to get back into the game - it simply must at least match the quality of the original Jolla phone. That is more important than what kind of hardware will be used inside it.
Software needs a major overhaul too; Sailfish now feels more sluggish than Android on the same hardware. The integrated email client has to be top-of-the line, comparable to K9 or Nine android apps at least, to avoid forcing the user to run an Android compatibility layer just for an email client. Everyone is aware of the browser situation I guess.
And finally, allow monetization of the apps in the store. That could resolve so many issues as it would probably create incentives for 3rd parties to tackle the problems I am referring to.
Thank you for your persistent efforts, and good luck with the next phone. I’ll start saving.
Maybe first try to fix the power consumption issue on the 10 III before talking about a new device? Android lasts a week, Sailfish only two days.
Same here, I’ve got a few of those in my drawer still It’s probably easier than with current Android phones, as AFAIK the bootloaders and stuff aren’t locked in any way, but creating a compatible image to flash on it would be a challenge, and I doubt anyone would be willing to spend such time on a device that’s basically already dead…
Would pick up a device if offered in Thailand, but would consider traveling to another affordable SEA country to pick a device up.
A (working! doesn’t on Xperia 10 V) headphone jack with a good DAC (which are pretty cheap now) is my highest priority. OLED was also missing from the selection, so I hope it was a given. Screen size @ 6" or less is preferable.
Hardware aside, there’s still a lot of work needed on the software front for folks to reasonable consider daily driving & getting new users adoption. Continuing to repeat the biggest ones:
- Qt6
- browser needs Gecko updates (& uBlock)
- email client lacks so much compared to K-9 (no plaintext view, no dark/OLED mode in viewer, can’t configure font to monospace, no bottom-posting option for replies, no ability to wipe all reply text, no reply all for mailing lists, no unsubscribe button for marketing spam when the unsubscribe header is sent, no PGP integration)
Would love some blockchain identity privacy features. Like privacy protecting biometrics
