Can we have a working, customizable (community powered!) weather app? Can we? I really miss the weather app…
The thing I really want is a physical keyboard. (Whilst was still usable, the N900 was close to perfection for me, so my dream phone is an updated one!)
I’d also like to be able to relock the bootloader, and get a verified boot (plus using a secure element to store bits, and thus increase the entropy of disk encryption)
Tbh I just hope for a flagship phone totally independent of the US.
If I have to highlight something, then it would be a reliable camera. That is why Samsung and iPhone are so great. Take the phone, point and shoot, and then it is just stunning images…
If the phone is a bit slow, I dont really care.
Here’s what I’m interested in a smartphone:
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- NFC
- Replaceable battery
- Independent MicroSD card slot
- Excellent GPS - fast and precise
- Not too big in size and not too heavy
- Sensors: Gyroscope, Compass
Either a micro SD card slot or 1TB internal storage to store my high resolution audio files, please.
More internal memory would drive up the price of the device and as not every one requires this amount of internal storage, an external memory card slot will have my vote.
An audio jack would be nice too so that I don’t have to resort to a USB dongle DAC.
I am willing to wait for a next-gen Jolla phone but once it is released, it should work straight out of the box like most phones do when they are released.
my man speaks after his nick, which represents format in which single song can weight 1GB
AND should have out of the box wizard
It takes up quite a bit of storage space indeed.
nah I’m all for it man
Indeed, there is little if any competition at all in the compact category.
This is why I am staying with my XZ2 compact. (5" screen, 135mm length, 65mm width, microSD, fingerprint, NFC)
It can fit in my pocket easily, and performs all its functions decently (nfc payments, messaging, camera, storage, emails, occasional browsing).
For me, a refresh of the XZ2 compact form factor and features would be the optimal phone.
Today, you can have very thin display bezels, so we can ideally stay within these margins:
I want a phone that my mom can use for years without me having to fly to her town to service the phone because all the storage ran out. It is important to have a lot of internal storage. I voted for 512GB because I believe it more than enough for the kind of pictures and video we take today.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 compact has a 2160×1080 pixel (18:9 aspect ratio) display but it is five inches.
The non-compact Xperia XZ2 has a larger (5.7 inch) display.
A 6 inch 18:9 display would be 136×68 mm in size.
At 2160×1080 pixels it would have 402.49 ppi.
The next Jolla phone needs a good rear camera. Regrettably that also means it would need to have a camera bump.
- If there’s a camera bump then there should be a photo grip at the other end.
An elevated grip area would would allow the phone to sit flat on a table even with a camera bump. The grip could be equipped with dedicated shutter buttons (for left or right hand use).
An IR port would be nice (just a personal preference), I’m not sure ANY phone manufacturer uses IR ports these days, it’s old tech I know, but I still have a few components around the home that use IR.
EDIT: Interesting; Category:Mobile phones with infrared transmitter - Wikipedia
You are correct, the XZ2 compact is 5", I edited my comment before your reply, but you saw the unedited one.
The phone as a universal remote? Cool idea. …and it doesn’t need to have software at the release date if it’s open for developers.
As people have mentioned in this thread the new displays have smaller bezels and that could allow a six inch phone to be just a bit larger than your favourite (older) device.
When they decide to take one good rear camera, please add an optical image stabilizer (OIS, IS, or OS) and the ability to have HDR mode.
Including OIS is also a good argument for having just one rear camera.
Reading what some of you are asking in a modern 2026 phone (3.5mm sockets, keyboards, IR etc) i believe the next requests would be a cassette slot.
