Next gen Jolla Phone

Thee are lots of comments about J1 and phone size. We need to take into account the state of Android back then and what it is now, one has progressed a lot the otherone not that much…
For the phone size I will make an argument my eyesight is not getting any better, hence 6.x" screen size makes more sense for me.

We don’t need to repeat past mistakes ad infinitum. Yes i know money is tight and jolla isn’t apple to have some billions in cash but rebranding mediocre HW (reeder) or poorly supported (sony) isn’t cutting it.

It doesn’t need to be latest and greatest, it doesn’t need to be the fastest it doesn’t need to be updated every year etc. And it doesn’t need to cover everyones needs. It needs to be a thoughtful product that works. And look and feel nice.

Texts aren’t always presented well in the 10III, e.g. Guardfish gives texts that are cut off at the end. In other apps texts are sometimes cropped. The newer Sony’s have an unbalanced shape. To me the 10 III is easy to hold, that’s all. Size is always disputable and a size/shape that satisfies everyone and everyone’s wishes does not exist.

I agree, that “premium feeling” is what it needs. It doesn’t matter how good the hardware is if the presentation feels duct taped together. (that being said, I’m a duct taped together kind of guy )

Jolla 1 was futuristic! It had low specs (camera and speaker, hm), but the design was elegant, we could open it easily and change the ‘other half’. The shape was balanced. It had ‘maps’, satnav Here worked well. But no front camera for video calling. Updates caused a lot of bugs. Sometimes I wanted it to throw it out of the window, glad I didn’t. I wouldn’t object if this design was used again, perhaps somewhat bigger.

Yeah, maybe the same width but a little bit higher, aspect ratio 20:9. Seems like the right kind of upgrade to me

J1 was not fantastic, the “other half” was a great idea with potential that never caught up. Maps and satnav are services and not bound to h/w. Have you ever tried SaifishOS on LG 5 which was released around the same time to J1?

Yes, that is my experience too. Besides, Bluetooth uses a lot of energy and the batteries of BT in-ears need to be charged.

If higher, then also wider please. The aspect ratio of Xperia 10 III still is strange to me. Since Jolla 1 so many apps with more capacities are created. Some require a bit more space then in the past.

No, I haven’t. I am not able to port so I stick to Jolla’s options.

I really would like to have the FM radio back

I think it’s time to reveal the new jolla phone: S71 SİYAH | Reedükkan
here are the specs: Reeder S71 technische Daten :: GSMchoice.com
and if they go for even higher specs it could be this one: Reeder S919 technical specifications :: GSMchoice.com

I don’t believe, that the new regulations will retroactively affect devices already on the market. So if user replaceable battery is important, better vote for it now.

The S71 would be very acceptable:

“MediaTek Dimensity 8200 – an 8-core chipset that was announced on December 8, 2022, and is manufactured using a 4-nanometer process technology. It has 1 core Cortex A78 at 3100 MHz, 3 cores Cortex A78 at 3000 MHz, and 4 cores Cortex A55 at 2000 MHz.”

indeed, I can not wait to see how games run on those specs.

As some users have already highlighted, we should stay calm with expectations which are reachable for both, the clients (us) and jolla. Of course there are cool and nice features like e-ink or super small devices ( i would prefer a small device as well), but at the end Jolla needs to find the perfect balance which fits most customers. So it is great that they reached out to us. Sure discussion is an important point but we should be realistic with our expectations.

One point which has not been highlighted yet, is the encryption/lock mechanism with/without fingerprinting.

The encryption of the (data privacy focused) device relies on a complex and long key. Without a fingerprint sensor we would need to type all the time a complex encryption key to unlock the device (i am not talking about booting up). This is for me a real pain with the C2. When you have used a Xperia III/IV in the past with the fingerprint sensor, this is such a downgrade. Using a simple code, does not make any sense, this can be cracked with the right hardware in seconds/minutes.

An approach would be to decouple encryption key from the locking key.

Other people and myself tried to raise this topic already, but I do not see any changes in the future soon:

I do see this as one of the real pain points of SFOS (next to the other ones like qt6, firefox, bt, …).

As I do understand the situation, right now it is not possible to decouple the device encryption key with the unlock key. I know there are some patches exist for the community supported devices but not for the official supported devices.

I think the best option could be to chose about “adopting” one of the nowadays “best buy”
i am thinking to “moto G85”

it has been for a couple of years “best mid-range” phone on the market

opting for a well-known device, could also encurage new user to try sailfish
in any case even opting out they have a reasonable phone for daily use (even with android)

if EU production Is a must, i think should be better switch from Redeer to Fair (FF5?)

why not trying a joint-venture with Graphene team (instead of depends on Google they can become self-standing)

What I mean Is

  • “going alone” opt for an existing recent best-buy so people can understand your decision
  • “join other” to grow both together, define specifications, build your own phone

Oh god, i hope it will have that front LED.
Better i start saving up some money!

Xperia 10 IV is close to perfect size, get close to that, wider phone is not so usable with one hand and spoils gesture navigation. Im so frustrated with phones getting too big and it is one of the biggest reasons why i wait to get fully functional sailfish to my xperia 10 IV. There is no alternative device and sony quitting with phones im not wasting my money for new sony devices. And yes you can get smaller chinese crap, but who really wants to use those. Size matters, ugh.

  • If there is a built-in FM-radio then a FM antenna has to be built-in too.
