@apb well, word suggestion has nothing to do with the OS as such and therefore isn’t relevant for the functionality.
I personally avoid such services, which in one way or another collect data about my writing habits and style and constrain my manner of thinking independently and limit my language to a certain level by the time I use it.
Interestingly, people are ready to invest a lot of time to learn how to use new features of a new version of android/ios, or solve the newly arisen problems with them, but are not ready to invest the same amount of time to get used to something new like sfos … Think about it …
Yes there is pressage but i havent seen jolla mentioning anything about adopting it as the solution or at least tell us that they will accept it as a communitu solution. Maybe i missed this.
You can sugarcoat the situation as much as you want but it doesn’t change the fact that there are issues on the SW side that need to be solved at some point. Not through android support but for the main OS.
In the one of the community meetings I asked about predictive text input and they said that they are looking options like pressage. Definitely agree that there are problems that need to be solved. And some of them hopefully sooner rather than later. But I am not so firm believer that everything needs to be perfect before people can start to use things
I don’t see how 9500+ pre-orders can be negative ![]()
Weird, it’s almost four years since I have my 10iii as a daily driver and i have never got any useful service from the GPS in mapping services.
Seriously weird. I have used my 10 III since 3 years and seven months for navigating on a nearly daily basis.
i’ve heard it said that GPS is more functional in PureMaps if you also have GPSInfo open at the same time. it’s possible, i only recently heard this and haven’t tested it myself.
my experience to date is spending a lot of time waiting for PureMaps to get a GPS lock which never happens…
my intent here - as in previous occasions - is to gently push back against the incredulous reactions people have when others report GPS lock problems with mapping software.
I don’t disagree but perfect is something far away when we don’t even have a usable phone. Ie. as i mentioned localization isn’t there, the browser is atrocious, and there are many things that should be updated, (from libs to the UX design which looks 15 years old).
I am waiting for an announcement of what is going to happen on the SW side now that the HW situations got to move forward.
Not entirely true. The truth is that starting GPSInfo gives a slightly faster first fix lock. Also for PureMaps.
What is this? Do you mean that you don’t have a usable phone? I’ve had my XA2 for about 7 years and it’s completely usable. Browser works some of the time and when some site doesn’t I can usually open it on Android Firefox (Or take my time to figure out the Angelfish browser installation). GPS locating is overappreciated and lazy way to navigate in any case IMO and still my GPS has been working all the time if I just wait a bit longer. Would work even better if I had the energy to make the hardware fixing which has been discussed elsewhere.
In the same that a washing machine is the lazy way of doing laundry i assume??
Lets be serious people. ![]()
Is there a fault on your device? I’ve actually gone through 3 10IIIs since support for it was released, and I’ve had no problems with GPS. I’ve been running Here We Go almost daily with it.
Perhaps the same kind of GPS/antennas-bad-contacts issue that an XA2 gets after too much shocks/pocket-bends/squeezes?
Well I wouldn’t say that the phone is non usable… sure it is hard to get gas fix inside the building, but BeaconDB should be released with 5.1. That should help with that. Everyone knows the situation with the browser, fairly easy to mitigate. And the UX is beautiful!
going back a long time, but i’m now four devices deep into sfos flashing and i’m pretty good about checking device capability before flashing. so, i think it was working at the time i flashed, and frankly i’ve never had a device that didn’t have functional GPS hardware…
We are a bit OT, perhaps could we continue discussing this in one of these trheads?: GPS stopped working and fix-xa2-gnss-gps-lets-try-harder
When they were very active, some of us and I, made many GPS trials back and forth Android ↔ Sailfish.
Android has so many abilities to determine positioning…
Even on an attested bad hardware condition you could seem having a very good GPS at a first glance.
Not saying for sure that you don’t have a software issue in your phone. Just bringing some nuance, as with GPS, it is is sometimes tricky to determine things.
Also, HW condition can degrade since the initial flashing. I saw that on some XA2 as, with me, they have an adventurous life (by often falling on the floor from the sofa or pocket xD)
You can mitigate all the SFOS problems by buying an ios or android device. That is not the point however.
The goal should be to create an OS that works without ANY android crap on it or going through hoops to get basic functionality. The rest will fall into place.
While i don’t expect many to share my aesthetic values, we have to admit that there must have been a decade since the last time a designer even bothered to do something in the visuals of SFOS.
Fully agree, native browser is quite essential. But for now we can live with it, that doesn’t make phone un-usable currently. Hopefully Jolla can finally start to grow again and have someone full time working with the browser
What is the Status of the Browser?
Being a dedicated Sailfish user since 12-13 years, I must say you are wrong. I’ve actually never had a more useful smartphone than my Sailfish ones.
