Next gen Jolla Phone update - 12/25

Seasonal greetings,

Time for a monthly update after Next gen Jolla Phone update - 11/25. As noted here and there, the start of the new Jolla Phone project has been amazing and we have just this morning passed 6,000 pre-orders!

A bit of Call-to-Action for us all here. While the 6k mark is an outstanding achievement by now, we have set the next target to 10,000 units by end of January, 2026 and to unlock the new TOH.

We need your help on achieving that. We are planning to introduce a referral program in early January and we’d like to ask your ideas and opinions how the referrals should work in our community? If you refer your friend or a colleague to pre-order the new Jolla Phone, how would you like to be rewarded for such? Or should there be something totally different for a “reward”, something for the community as a whole? Ideas welcome, please leave comments below!

Some news & updates in regards the technical specifications

SoC and modem

  • The SoC will be an unpublished MediaTek Dimensity 7000 series chipset. As it is still unpublished we can’t disclose details about it and need to wait the SoC vendor publications
  • For the 12/256GB memories we’re shooting for LPDDR5 for the RAM and UFS3.1 for the mass storage, both from top tier Korean vendors. Please note, there is an unseen global shortage on memory chips which may effect the availability of memory types, thus we’ll confirm the particular memory types closer to the mass production.
  • For the cellular bands we have been able to fit the following 4G & 5G bands:
    • LTE FDD: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28AB, 66
    • LTE TDD: 34, 38, 39, 40, 41
    • 5G NR: n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n26, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n77, n78
  • In regards the SIM configuration, it will be a single tray dual-sided nano-SIM with a separate slot for the microSDXC. I.e. in total 3-slots in one tray. See further notes here.

Cameras

  • The primary back camera will feature Sony IMX766 AF 50MP sensor module, known for its quality and performance within the price range
  • The secondary back camera will be a 13MP ultrawide AF Sony IMX214
  • Front camera is set to be a 32MP wide lens FF Sony IMX616

Now, as we are getting good quality top tier modules to the new Jolla Phone let’s push this together! We’ve open sourced the relevant parts from Jolla side and there are great Sailfish community apps like Advanced Camera, so let’s make a good camera together to the product!

Size and the battery

The housing design of the phone is super tight, and e.g. in regards the SIM and SD card slots it even started to look like we would be able to fit only a single hybrid tray that would share the 2nd nano-SIM with the microSD. We pushed further and after several iterations we’re able to find a physically smaller (and slimmer) battery on the same capacity, i.e with a higher density. The battery cell is Silicon Carbon Anode Lithium from a top tier vendor, same as used by some well-known global brands. This free’d up some space so we could revise the design, make the housing a few millimetres shorter and get more space also for the 3-slot SIM tray.

Thus, the length of the device looks like will be 1-2mm shorter than the original spec.

Connectors

In regards The Other Half, the community questionnaire is open and we’ll define the final spec and connectors accordingly later in January.

Further, there’s been questions does the new Jolla Phone support e.g. USB-C video out. We’re looking into enabling it but as we’re in the middle of specifying the configuration, we can’t fully confirm this yet. The additional video out will also need some further push on the Sailfish OS side to make it happen and usable. Something we can all work together once the time is right.

Also, to clarify, in addition to the earlier noted capabilities in the Tech Specs section at the product page the supported sensors include gyroscope, compass, accelerometer, ambient light, proximity and the usual combo of GPS/Galileo/GLONASS/BEIDOU for positioning.

We’ll revise the product page Tech Spec table in regards all above once we have the final iterations done.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

On the Jolla team we’ll be also taking some time off for the holidays and revert after the New Years. Cheers!

@Jolla

If you are serious about the video out (even if it doesn’t reach the final product) please start discussion about a new compositor. The community has excellent coders that can chime in.

Its needed more than the phone itself at this point.

Great work! Have nice holiday!

Nice to see so many details about the specs! I can’t wait to know more about the SoC. Regarding video-out, it would be a good selling point even if it doesn’t work with Sailfish OS yet. There are people who want to run GNOME on their phones nowadays.

Will the screen have an always-on display function and will it be possible to wake it up by tapping the screen? Why aren’t you considering the possibility of an e-SIM?

Isn’t the joy of knowing that one more person is at least trying SFOS enough?

Wonderful news to read!

Regarding sponsorships, I believe that every little step should benefit the entire community rather than just one person. It’s more equitable for everyone, and it also benefits newly recruited members!

Have a wonderful holiday season, everyone, and enjoy each other’s company!

Is this by any chance going to be somewhat waterproof, maybe even IPX? Couldn’t find any info about that yet.

oh man, that would push me over the cliff!

I’m still hesitant because bought an Xperia 10V before but if always-on + double tap is back, I will book my losses and go for the new Jolla phone…

That’s why I asked about it, because maybe it’s not a key feature, but it was already in the Nokia N9 with MeeGo, and that was my first experience with this solution. Then, for many years, no device offered this functionality, and it makes using the phone much easier and is simply modern.
That’s why I hope it will work in the Jolla Phone.
Honestly, I would be willing to pay extra for this to be the case.

It would be nice to use a proper SOC and not 7000 series that usually sit below even mid range snapdragons.
Just saying, but if we wanted 10 III performance at best, we could just keep using that phone.

Referal bonus could be

  • a free SFOS licence that can be optionally transferred to some other user
  • a Jolla baseball hat/t-shirt with some badge on it - like Jolla/SFOS+1 or Jolla++, SFOS++
  • some discount/priority coupon for the coming Jolla tablet - because guys, seriously speaking, you have to go for it now! :face_savoring_food::smiling_face_with_sunglasses::rofl:
if reboot, let it be complete reboot!

all, or any…

AFAIK it was part of Jolla C, still, right? My memory might fool me but I was lost during some Xperia journey due to lacking low level firmware support there…

and c’mon?! asking extra for such iconic feature would be - well, beancounting?

I agree, of course it should just be a feature of the device, but what I meant was that if the price of the device would generally be higher after implementing this feature, it would still be worth it. I hope that @Jolla isn’t even considering releasing a phone without Always on Display and tap to wake up.

Midrange Snapdragon such as what sku?
SFOS isn’t really a resource hog, so i don’t get why people want the fastest possible all the time.
The 7300 (as a stand-in) looos to be beating even the 10V quite handily.

For every person whining about top specs and comparing to €1000+ phones, there is also another that really don’t want to pay more than €300, and preferably only every 5 years, thinking €599 is steep. Obviously this has a lot to do with personal preference - but those specs are just so far apart that i’d honestly say both are wrong.

hmmm, it started with 499eur - I bet it would not make any losses  -, now we are at level of 5xx and production range will be cca. 6xx. I would say, if technically feasible, it should be part of the package without any extra price tag…

*) edited prices

@Jolla Given the current geopolitical situation and discussions about becoming independent from American technology, are there any talks, for example with the European Commission or other EU bodies, about co-financing the development of a European operating system, which could undoubtedly be SailfishOS?

I definitely agree with you.

I would suggest a pipo.
