After yet another vocal minority had been clamoring for one to be introduced for months, by the way.
Stay on topic please. Because it might look we āoldtimersā donāt behave respectfully either.
Maybe wećOldtimersćshould let the forum flourish with all the fresh new AI inspired specialists for some time.
Hey, at least anyone can see, what is on the roadmap and how long to wait for or how to contribute
As a generic comment to the specifications discussion above.
The HW is only half of the product. A good and optimal programmed software may work better on a āslowerā HW than a generic product programmed in a savage way and that needs tons of processing to be able to work decently (e.g. Android).
Remember that the first iPhones had a āslowerā HW when compared to the Android counterparts. The thing is that Apple developed iOS for its specific HW, whereas Android had to be developed for a plurality of HW specifications.
The J1 had very modest HW specs and it worked (and still works) like a charm.
Iām new here too. In my opinion, Jolla should focus on software. Itās good to build your own smartphone to show whatās possible with the software. The main focus should be on making Sailfish OS available to other manufacturers. For example, I use a Shiftphone 8. If Sailfish OS was available for it, it would be my choice. Shift would be a good partner. They know how to build repairable smartphones, Jolla can contribute SFOS. For me that would be the perfect constellation.
I only speak German and used a translation.

You address the more than old discussion about Jolla joining other companies which build modular and easy serviceable phones, e.g. Fairphone.
I am not very optimistic about it.
PD: Really, when buying a Shiftphone8 you have to pay 20⬠Pfand? Oh boyā¦..
You will get the deposit back no later than 2036⦠Thatās how long the SP8 software support has
Short answer: Being just another OS manufacturer is going to give you way smaller marketing oportunities⦠no bigger news service would talk about you, if you have some mobile OS you can flash on some other phones.
If you produce software and a device, even new outlets like n-tv or other not that tech heavy news channels will talk about you.
Best regards

PS: Wenn ich es Dir nochmal in deutsch schreiben soll, sag bescheid. ![]()
I donāt see it that way. In my opinion, there is currently an opportunity, with political changes, for smaller and independent device and software manufacturers to grow and advance. It would be important for Europe that these companies support each other.
If not now, then when?
Iām pretty sure that sailors are smart enough to know all that. I trust them to steer the Jolla ship safely and efficiently.
See it the same way, but I do not see how my point is connected to that.
It still is better to offer the whole package so that news channels can talk about it as the full package.
Best regards

Pre-orders went over 8000 at some point today!
Looking at specs of SwitchPhone 8, they are awfully similar to the ne Jolla phone - And that is great IMO!
If Jolla would move to adjusting the OS for more phones, I see it feasible as separate kickstarter (or pick your any favorite) campaign - let users put the money where the mouth is!
If any new phone should be supported, pay for it.
Iāll be happily waiting for the new Jolla phone myself ![]()
And now closing in to 8100. Seems to be accelerating a bit.
I bought my pre-order voucher just recently.
And Iām really happy that this new Jolla Phone ticks almost all of my boxes:
- 2 hardware SIM slots + 1 separate (non-shared) microSDXC slot: Yesss!!!
This is why I still use my Xperia XA2 Plus as a daily driver. Hopefully not long anymore.
Now, if at least one of the SIM slots also supports e-SIM-capable hardware SIMs and such modules can be configured/programmed natively from within Sailfish OS, I would be in heaven. - RGB indication LED: This!!
Had my first contact with such notification LEDs through the Nokia N900 and canāt live without them anymore. - Fingerprint reader: Splendid!
Although I think that having this sensor built into the display instead of the power key does provide much more potential for an innovative UX. For example: Users can place various icons on the lock screen. Dragging one of these icons with a registered finger onto the fingerprint reader area will immediately trigger the respective action after the fingerprint has been verified. These actions can include things such as: Toggling flight mode, arming your credit card for payment via NFC (only active while the registered finger is kept on the sensor area; if the user lifts their finger or drags the icon away, the action is aborted immediately), recording a voice message while the finger is on the sensor (and optionally send this message to a predefined contact when the user lifts their finger; if the user drags the icon away instead: abort without saving or sending anything), and so on. - Privacy switch: Nice, regardless if itās a real hardware kill switch or not!
However, I strongly think that the movement direction of this switch should be perpendicular to the housing, not parallel, to lower the risk of unintentionally operating the switch when you pull the phone out of your pocket or put it back into your pocket. - User-replaceable battery: Much appreciated!
I just hope that this will not negatively influence the phoneās weather resilience. Iām not talking about fully submerging the device in water, Iām just talking about sweaty hands, rainy or foggy days, coming back home from cold weather (condensation), and so on.
Some thoughts on the other specs of the phone:
- Display:
Displays with notches IMHO just donāt fit the design philosophy of Sailfish OS. I know that a patch is available to blank out the notched display area, but still. Moreover, arenāt displays without any notch cheaper than displays with notch? And wouldnāt a thicker top bezel (which Iād gladly accept to have a notch-free experience) make room for one or both of the following 2 features? - No, not a 3.5mm audio jack
, but a second USB-C port, which supports āAudio Adapter Accessory Modeā:
In said mode, the DAC inside the phone is used and the analog signals are output through specific pins on the USB-C port for directly connecting any ānon-intelligentā headphones. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C#Audio_Adapter_Accessory_Mode. So no external DACs are needed at all.
And because it is a compliant USB-C port, users can for example charge their phone with a standard charger through port 1, while accessing a USB flash drive through port 2 at the same time - without the need of any external hubs. Or use high-end headphones which bring their own DAC. - A LED flash also for the front (selfie) camera:
Correct me if Iām wrong, but I havenāt seen any other phone or tablet with such a feature so far. This could really be one of the things - among others (see above) - which set the Jolla Phone apart from the rest. Using the display as a lightsource for taking selfies - as many other phones do - does give a less harsh light due to the much bigger radiation area, but at a much lower brightness however. - 4G and 5G bands:
As long as the Jolla Phone also supports plenty of bands which are used in far-east Asia, Iām happy. - Bluetooth:
Many Samsung phones with Android are able to send audio to 2 separate Bluetooth sinks at the same time. These can be totally different models from totally different manufacturers. While this is a really cool feature, the Samsung implementation has 2 major flaws: First, it does not offer any latency adjustment, which means that you cannot use 2 Bluetooth speakers to play music at a bigger venue. Itās therefore only feasible for headphones. And second, you cannot split the left and right audio channels between both speakers to get true Stereo sound by placing the speakers away from each other. So, can the new Jolla Phone do better here?
At the moment, it looks like the magic threshold of 10,000 vouchers will be reached by the end of February, to bring back āThe Other Halfā. I hope that this weekendās FOSDEM acts as a great booster. For those who are interested, I posted my own TOH wishes here.
Must be FOSDEM, prime advertisement
The pace didnāt change since fosdem started.
I agree, I donāt mind bezels & would prefer no notch. Honestly Xperia 10 Mk VII looks really good in this area, square screen with bigger than usual, but utilised bezel for front camera & stereo speakers.
EDIT: In my first post on this forum I said about Jollaās push, to be unique, but at the cost of quality, or other needed things. This IMO is kinda that - why notch? The phone case may look unique tho, but It shouldnāt sacrifice on features, and be more pricey because of some not really understandable design choices. Donāt break the already open doors⦠![]()
Indication LEDs are awesome
I donāt know about this, Jack has a plus - it has smaller connector, that when did in the right way is harder to break than USB-C and cables can be thinner/less stiff. If the phone would be provided with small 90 degree usb-c to jack or some kind of small adapter, then cool. Other than that - IDK. I prefer Jack, and Itās even more crucial when your OS doesnāt have that much of the 3rd party software support in case of TWS or other wireless Bluetooth headsets.
Anyway, Iām awaiting more news, but pls, Jolla devs, consider screen without the notch. Have a bezel with a webcam & maybe second bezel for a stereo speaker?
Specs are important, but will basic phone features like making calls actually work? Will GPS navigation work?
I switched back from sailfish a few months back, because the very basic features just did not work (Sony XA2). I get the specs and screen and SOC are all important, but it would be nice to be able to use this as a daily phone (tool), not just a ā¬579 toy;)
I am still considering buying one.
