New Jolla Phone readyness

Hi there, I pre-ordered Jolla Phone and now I’m in panic mode for android app support. I’ve checked around and with some adaptation I shall survive for normal apps BUT for a few critical apps I’m still not sure. How can I test if they would work? An app using NFC could work?

Thanks

If you’re using the word “panic”, Jolla products are not for you (yet). You can safely cancel your pre-order, and see how the actual product works out later this year (hopefully!), then re-evaluate.

Shared Bluetooth is just now being shipped for the first time, we’ll see how that works out when official app is available in Jolla Store.

Maybe NFC and GPS will be able to follow with the same strategy, if it actually works out for BT in practice.

Right now, you should not count on using any hardware directly from within AAS.

What? Why would that need to be shared?
Contrary to BT and NFC it is already plumbed in, presumably by proxy, just fine.

And more on topic:
Why do people think it is reasonable to create new threads with the same question as everyone else all the time?
This has already been discussed to death and back.

Well, maybe I am wrong about how exactly to get AGPS insta-fixes in AAS bypassing SFOS years-long failure at it. I thought I had cracked it at GPS/Location not working for Android apps - #38 by lkraav but now it’s somehow regressed again.

But details of it is not the topic here, could continue in linked thread.

And which are these critical apps? Maybe some users have experience with them and can help you further.

Panic because I planned to replace completely my android phone with this…

As I see you are italian, you know CIEID app, proton apps, then banking apps like alfabeto banking and BNP paribas, any replacement for google wallet, easypark, namirial otp, MS authenticator, …

As you see some do not have an alternative possible. How do you see the situation?

BTW I checked the app compatibility.

BTW, I want to retake my privacy and decision capability, at least up to a point, hope this phone is a starting one. In 2006 I started a long linux journey, this could be similar.

Bad….I see the situation bad.

Banking apps under AppSupport are a lottery. There is a thread dedicated to it –> Banking apps on Sailfish OS

I tried MS Authenticator in the past and never worked, at least for me.

I have tested neither CIEID nor proton apps.

As far as i known, Google Wallet can not be used with AppSupport as it depends on Google Services and is a Google native app. Unfortunately, there is no App in SFOS with the same functions.

Look, I have been using SFOS since the beginning. Even earlier, with the N9. I have always had a secondary Android for such situations…not optimal, but it is what it is…

Thanks, knowing the situation allows to have open eyes.

Could you test CIEID and proton? Wallet, ok np

CIEID asks for Google Play Services…so no.

I tried Proton VPN. It installs and seems to work, but when I try to establish a VPN it says that the device does not accept VPNs (which is not true). This may be a limitation of AppSupport.

Other Proton Apps I do not know as I do not have any Proton account.

Android VPNs don’t work, you need to use WireGuard or OpenVPN configs at the SFOS level.

I don’t know what you need out of MS Authenticator but if you just need OTP codes then SailOTP/Foil Auth are native apps that can do that.

Similarly I have no idea what CIEID is but you can install MicroG or Google Play Services. However, it might not work and the latter would be compromising on privacy.

Proton Mail and Proton Pass both work in the browser (as home screen shortcuts), Proton Drive works in AAS with some rough edges

Proton Mail and Drive works, I don’t use anything else.

The ProtonMail app works fine except for notifications (they might work with microG).

Android VPNs generally don’t work BUT you can download a WireGuard config file from Proton VPN and import it in SailfishOS which works perfectly fine (I tested it)

CEID is the application from the Italian government for Italian citizens to identify themselves online using the digital ID. I have MicroG and it did not work.

And for a relevant application like this I would not do any wild experiments.

Yeah, sadly it is probably not a good idea to try messing around to get this one app working, especially if it’s needed very badly. Actual proper Google Play Services might help but then at that point SFOS is likely not for you (or Ghep, rather)

Ghep is the one with the doubts. I’ve been here for a loooong time

Oh, I know, I meant “you” as in “the reader” if that makes sense

microG, what is that?

Can I install google play services and apps would work? drawbacks?

Fatalism, avoiding challenges, prefering a status quo slams the door for a wider public. If you (we) are always that person who carries more than 1 phone because they lack essentials, we cannot promote it to others and Sailfish will stay for the ‘happy few’ only.
