Has anyone in this situation tested, if the blocked phone works on the same network provider with a dedicated data SIM? With data devices, mobile access points etc. one also can’t place an emergency call. This way the Sony phones blocked by IMEI maybe work with a data SIM as a pocket computer.
One difference with Australia is, however, that the national broadcaster has picked up the topic (Nu släcks 2G- och 3G-näten – tiotusentals mobiltelefoner blockeras | SVT Nyheter , turn off JavaScript if you’re using SFOS browser for that) and no list of devices is provided by the operators. Highly intransparent.
Things will continue to work somehow until beginning of February and then it’s switch to Telia or the two other operators that use that network, until 2027 … and no idea what to do then, if my 10ii will still be working
And if we gather more problematic details, we could try to “tip” to get media attention since operators might not like that ![]()
Interesting idea with a dedicated data SIM, but I have not tried that. On my dear Nokia N9 (retired), there was very good integration with VoIP. If Sailfish would have something like that, it would probably simplify for those using a dedicated data SIM to anyway be able to make phone calls. And travellers could probably find it useful, combining for example Surfroam SIM with Localphone VoIP.
But I wouldn’t be sure that this would work because emergency calling is supposed to work even without a SIM (and thus also with a data-only SIM). Best would be to inquiry the operators (even though this would be independent of them, PTS denies responsibility)
As these thread in fairphone forum suggest it has nothing todo with sailfish
https://forum.fairphone.com/t/does-fps-allow-for-calls-to-emergency-number-112-via-volte-in-sweden-after-3g-shutdown/127883
someone on first page with older fairphone (3) says after contacting provider and fairphone support, the issue maybe fairphone related (but didnt read the whole thread as its quite large)
edit:
also from the same thread, swedish users can check with phone number 225 if the phone would work with volte emergency call. If the number works you should be fine
I have already dialed 225 and there an automatic voice tells me that I can do 4G calls, but perhaps not 4G emergency calls (with 112)
Wow, sounds like ki “perhaps not” ![]()
At least you know 4g calling is working
or business/disclaimer blah blah, for purpose they ‘have warned’ and are no more responsible in case a real emergency call would fail.
So, does your phone work again, @SRU ?
I think its funny that they’ve made a phone service where you can test your phone and the service tells you maybe it works ![]()
My Xperia works great! Even MMS worked, as soon as I changed to the Tele2 SIM (earlier, I could not make MMS work with another operator). The problem is that the happiness might not last long, because the phone will be blocked from the 2 February 2026, according to Tele2. I have discussed with Tele2 and they seem to find no other solution than a new phone.
To their credit, I must say that when I called 225, I was informed that I would have received a SMS if there was any problem with emergency calling. And I have earlier received such an SMS, which is why I started this topic.
Out of curiosity, would you have to pay the full price for it? What phones did they offer, any that would one could install Sailfish on?
They have proposed a fair deal, if one looks at it from an economical point of view. However, non of those phones would be possible to install Sailfish on, as far as I know.
So during the 24 months that I can probably not change this subscription, it would really be nice to keep using my Xperia at least as a second phone with VoIP (SIP), for example over WiFi or a data SIM. If anyone has advice for that, I would be glad to hear.
For SIP a SIP provider is needed who connect your SIP account to a phone number → monthly fee, and the question if s1p now works or not.
This interests mee too! What options do currently exist for VoWIFI & SIP on a SailfishOS phone without VoLTE support?
I found this page from PTS: Operators must ensure access to 112 - the quote states that the problem is not that the phones cannot call using VOLTE, but that the phone may not be able to use VOLTE for emergency calls on all networks (see bold text in the second quote).
According to the information PTS has received, this concerns certain phone models. These are phones that have 4G, including the technology that enables voice calls over 4G (VoLTE, Voice over LTE), but do not support emergency calls over 4G/VoLTE.
The risk is that users of these phones can make regular calls but not emergency calls.
There is some more information from the GSMA - this seems to have been a long effort:
Currently, the GSMA Network and Terminal Steering Working Groups are updating the technical specifications that will ensure VoLTE emergency calls are handled correctly in both devices and networks, enabling a smooth transition from circuit-switched to packet-switch-based emergency call support. They are also engaging with GSMA members to align both networks and devices with the specifications.
The GSMA will also continue to support VoLTE interoperability via the promotion of IMS Profile #4 and #6, through the GSMA VoLTE Interoperability Testing service.
VoLTE Roaming should become the default choice for voice roaming. So, MNOs should no longer request device manufacturers to disable IMS when roaming, rather they should enable IMS and allow VoLTE if there is a VoLTE Roaming agreement in place (as indicated by the Voice Over PS Indicator signalled to the UE from the Network).
I tried my Comviq SIM* today, just out of curiosity (using roaming SIMs instead).
What happened:
First, it looked like it wasn’t working, calling 225 failed etc. Then I realised I was maybe not using the correct access point settings and changed them to what is provided for my operator. Takes a few minutes to take effect, then I could suddenly call 225 again. Big question is though how this will be from February. Kinda tempted to try since I have other SIM cards which will continue working since they can use the Telia network as they are roaming SIM cards (although I wonder whether there are ways to make them support VoLTE but that’s another topic)
I just wonder whether the misconfiguration was the reason my phone got flagged in the first place … but that I would need to check with my operator I guess

edit:
* uses Tele2 network
I have a SIP account and phone number through Localphone (https://www.localphone.com), which has worked very well for me and is not costly. This is great for travelling. However, the audio in the Localphone Android app does not seem to work under Sailfish. Other SIP clients should be possible to use. I have not been able to find a Sailfish app for SIP but there are several Android apps. If anyone has experience of a SIP client working well under Sailfish, I would be glad to hear.
S1P FTW:
I reflashed one Xperia X F5121to android, updated to latest everything, still no option for Volte in the Network Settings, so I guess they are dead from Feb next year.
I think the Xperia X is much too old for VoLTE, or do you know that it originally could VoLTE before first flashing SFOS, in original state?
