Today I got a SMS from Tele2, saying that they will block my phone from the 2 February 2026, because of lacking support for emergency calls (112). Apparently, such problems have been known for years. For example, see Ensuring continuity of access to emergency services in the transition to IMS/VoLTE services – EENA . Sad to see that it has been handled so poorly. On this phone with Sailfish, “4G calling (VoLTE)” is activated, but that does not seem to have helped. I hope that switching to Telia will give me some more years of use the phone. Does anyone have qualified advice?
I’m on Hallon here in Sweden with an Xperia 10ii, and I haven’t had any contact from them regarding this 112 issue.
we’re going to block your phone to provide you a better service ![]()
If my provider does that, I would switch immediately! Not the phone, but the provider.
Agree - I will not keep using Tele2 after this. The problem is apparently caused by poor standardization of 4G in combination with closing down on 2G and 3G networks, which the network operators, the regulator (PTS) and others share responsibility for. It seems like they are also causing a risk that people visiting Sweden might not be able to make emergency calls with their mobile phones. However, I have 24 months left of the subscription on Tele2, which I hope to find a way to get out of.
Check VoLTE provider support , if you manage to get VoLTE to work you are probably fine and can keep using your device. Your best chance to get it to work is reflashing to the latest Android so you get the latest blobs (baseband etc), if VoLTE works under Android it will hopefully work under SFOS as well and you can flash back to SFOS.
Before switching providers it might be worth finding out what is going on in swedish networks, my guess is that soon enough all providers will make that same move and stop supporting <4G devices. quick google gave me 2G and 3G networks are being shut down – some mobile phones may not be able to call 112 - Krisinformation.se
Yes it sucks. Sweden is by far not the first country to do that, maybe one of the first in Europe. None of this is new but it has been ignored in SFOS for way too long.
Good timing though for xmas phone sales.
I had that same problem in Australia and eventually gave up. Back in Germany i at least managed to get VoLTE partially working for the german provider with a round of flashing. Now the device (10 II) potentially works in Australia as well, can not try anymore ;).
Sending SMS often seems to be a problem still, that i think is likely an SFOS problem. But the rest is “just” an Android blobs problem, which SFOS never ever updates so the older your SFOS install the more likely you missed several updates.
Thanks for the replies. I have already checked that VoLTE works for me with ordinary calls. In my case, the problem is apparently for emergency calls. However, flashing the device would be too much for me.
If VoLTE works your phone will hopefully keep working and not be “blocked”. I guess they just send notifications to customers which still use the legacy stack, maybe only sometimes. You will see soon enough what the impact will be, and if it is too harsh you will need a phone that properly does VoLTE (not beta → not SFOS).
Would switching providers not be the way easier/cheaper option?
Telia would most likely work until they (at the end of 2027?) close down 2G. And what ellemmennoppi wrote above indicates that Hallon (3) would perhaps also work.
Just got this message from my provider.
You need to replace your mobile phone
Your mobile phone will be blocked in our network on February 2, 2026. This is because emergency calls (112) do not work properly via 4G with this mobile phone.
The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) has decided that mobile phones that do not support emergency calls will be blocked.
Switch to a new mobile phone to continue using our network as usual.
Emergency calls may stop working
From December 1, 2025, emergency calls may stop working as usual.
In this case, the call is sometimes transferred to another operator’s network, which is called emergency roaming.
It only works if the other network has coverage where you are.
In emergency roaming, it may take longer for the call to be connected. Your location is not automatically sent to SOS Alarm. For emergency roaming to work, you may need to restart your mobile phone or remove and reinsert the SIM card.
So can anyone at Jolla tell us what the plan for Sailfish is regarding this problem? You must have known about it years in advance (see the link in my first message).
You should ask that question in the fresh community meeting topic.
I can’t join that meting because of my work, but if anyone wants to be a substitute and bring this up on the meeting, feel free to let me know
You don’t need to attend a meeting to ask a topic.
No. All providers will at some point be affected. Just like all countries around the world will be.
Any device not really supporting VoLTE is becoming increasingly useless for travel already, with european countries joining in slowly.
Never mind, it should be more than “well known”. Even seemingly pointed out as C2 selling point on Jolla C2 Community Phone – Jolla Shop
“Jolla C2 is a true Linux smartphone that works! Thanks to its 4G and VoLTE support, it is ready to be your trusted phone for everyday use.”
Other devices not working so well could be because it is really hard, or some other reason. Funny how we still talk about 4G while 5G is what we should have in a new device.
Would a data SIM possibly work or will they ban all data-only devices too?
From a technical point of view data will work. But if legislation tells to “block” they might block everything. At least that would be a good business decision ;).
